Dubai's ruler overbuilds with public money and defaults on debt, showing that city builders must be realists as well as visionaries.

Glaeser concludes that NIMBYism and restrictive building policies hobble cities, calling for construction-friendly reform to let urban centers thrive.

Glaeser opens by establishing that dense urban proximity drives innovation in ways digital communication cannot replicate, tracing this idea-factory model from ancient Athens through modern megacities. Detroit's catastrophic collapse as a single-industry factory town becomes the book's central cautionary tale, while New York's near-bankruptcy and reinvention around financial services shows how cities can adapt when they embrace smaller, innovative businesses. Urban poverty is reframed as a sign of vitality, with Rio's favela dwellers shown to be far better off economically than their rural counterparts. Cities are also revealed as engines of cultural creativity, as London's theaters nurture Shakespeare and Haussmann's rebuilt Paris creates a beautiful but increasingly unaffordable metropolis. Glaeser closes by warning that suburban sprawl in developing nations threatens global emissions and calls for policy reform that frees cities to grow and fulfill their potential.

Frederick Law Olmsted designs Riverside outside Chicago as the first planned suburban community, blending woodland settings with commuter access to the city.

Gaborone rises from shanties to one of sub-Saharan Africa's most prosperous cities through education investment and relatively uncorrupt governance.

Baghdad's House of Wisdom and Japan's secret trading port of Nagasaki demonstrate how cities act as crucial nodes in global knowledge networks, accumulating and amplifying ideas across centuries. Silicon Valley's emergence near Stanford University shows how the same dynamic operates in modern form, clustering talent to produce extraordinary innovation. The Curley Effect in Boston and Coleman Young's Detroit illustrate how politically motivated leadership can devastate a city's economic base by driving away its wealthiest residents and investors. African Americans' migration north and the resulting Harlem Renaissance reveal how cities enable cultural and economic breakthroughs for groups previously locked out of opportunity. Public health milestones — from New York's public water system to the London cholera pump discovery — show how cities learn to tame the dangerous externalities their own density creates. By the book's end, the contrast between Detroit's repeated failures and Gaborone's disciplined rise from shantytown underscores that governance quality and investment in education are the decisive factors in urban prosperity.

Historical case studies that shaped the urban world.

Research shows that each 10% increase in college graduates raises a city's per capita output by 22%, revealing education as a critical urban force.

Patent citation data shows companies cite nearby sources twice as often as chance predicts, proving that physical closeness accelerates innovation.

Glaeser identifies Detroit's fatal flaw: assembly-line work required workers to know less, leaving them without skills or urban networks when factories closed.

Glaeser opens with hard evidence — data on college graduates, patent citations, and Jevon's Paradox — all pointing to physical proximity as the irreplaceable engine of urban innovation that no technology can substitute. Detroit's collapse is reframed as an inevitable consequence of a model that deliberately deskilled workers, while the poverty paradox reveals how well-intentioned government programs often worsen the very problems they aim to fix. Kinshasa's dysfunction and Chicago's dramatic public health gains anchor the argument that governance quality determines whether a city lifts or destroys its residents. Restrictions on construction emerge as a recurring villain, shown to have made Paris unaffordable, Mumbai dysfunctional, and California's environmental policies quietly counterproductive. London's congestion pricing demonstrates that smart road pricing can solve problems that physical infrastructure alone cannot, pointing toward a toolkit of market-based urban interventions. Glaeser closes with a call for simple, fair rules — replacing bureaucratic permits with fees, targeting preservation precisely, and redirecting federal transportation funding toward the dense cities that actually drive national prosperity.
