Two Trains Running opens in a Pittsburgh diner where Memphis, the owner, is locked in a battle to force the city to pay him a fair price for his building. Sterling, freshly released from prison, arrives looking for work and connection, and soon becomes entangled in the neighborhood's daily struggles. Memphis's fury escalates when he discovers a deed clause that strips him of negotiating power, and Sterling arms himself after failing to find legitimate employment. When Hambone, the neighborhood man who spent a decade demanding a ham he was owed, dies peacefully without ever receiving justice, the mood in the diner shifts toward grief and rage. Memphis unexpectedly receives a $35,000 offer from the city — far more than he asked for — and credits the spiritual guidance of the legendary healer Aunt Ester. Sterling, also transformed by Aunt Ester's wisdom, delivers his own form of justice by breaking into Lutz's shop and stealing a ham to place in Hambone's casket.

While the main plot builds around Memphis's battle with the city, the diner serves as a gathering place where the community processes loss, loyalty, and survival. Prophet Samuel's elaborate viewing draws the neighborhood's fascination and suspicion, and even his casket is targeted by a would-be thief overnight. Wolf runs numbers, mourns with Bubba Boy's community, and tries to manage the tension between Memphis's temper and Sterling's volatility. West appears daily for coffee and repeatedly attempts to buy Memphis's building through carefully structured financial offers, while revealing that his wife's death drove him to visit Aunt Ester himself. Hambone's death calls the whole community to account, and West's quiet decision to bury him for free and the Malcolm X rally's peaceful turnout both suggest that solidarity still lives beneath the frustration. Memphis's gesture of buying flowers for Hambone and asking Risa to sign the card from everyone who dropped the ball closes the pool on a note of communal accountability.

Holloway's defense of Hambone's stubborn dignity reframes what looks like madness as the purest form of justice, and Memphis's account of his stolen farm reveals the deep wound that drives his rage. Sterling's confession of his life story to Risa and her cryptic sharing of the number 781 mark the beginning of a fragile trust between them. Memphis reaches a breaking point when he fires his lawyer, delivers a raw speech comparing his fury to the freedom he felt after his mother died, and ultimately abandons years of skepticism to rush to Aunt Ester for guidance. Sterling returns from Aunt Ester transformed — certain that Risa was sent to him — and the two finally kiss, while Holloway's refusal to defuse Sterling's confrontation with the Alberts exposes the limits of his passive spirituality. The pool closes with the small but devastating revelation that Lutz came to pay his respects at Hambone's viewing, arriving too late to mean anything except as the final provocation that sends Sterling through the butcher's window.
