Tennyson's 'Ulysses' opens with the legendary hero back home in Ithaca, restless and dissatisfied after years of adventure. Ulysses chafes against the boredom of governing and yearns to travel and pursue knowledge to the farthest edges of the world. He formally entrusts his kingdom to his son Telemachus, acknowledging his son's steadier temperament and suitability for the work of governance. Turning to the ship waiting in the harbor, Ulysses addresses his old mariners with a passionate speech urging them to join him on one final voyage. Though they are all aged and weakened by time, Ulysses insists that heroic hearts can still accomplish noble things. The poem ends with his famous rallying cry to strive, seek, find, and not yield—an expression of defiance against stasis and death.

While the main arc of 'Ulysses' is defined by grand declarations, the poem is also full of smaller, vivid moments that deepen the portrait of its restless speaker. Ulysses' bitter description of his aged wife and his nostalgic recall of battle at Troy paint a picture of a man who belongs to the past rather than the present. His reflections on time running out—life piled on life, every hour a bringer of new things—give his restlessness a philosophical edge. In the second stanza, small details about Telemachus, including his decency and his promise to honor the household gods, show why Ulysses trusts him with Ithaca. The final stanza builds to the voyage itself, with Ulysses ordering the crew to push off and acknowledging the very real dangers that await them at sea. Together these moments flesh out the dramatic monologue and the complex character at its center.

Ulysses declares the crew shares one equal temper of heroic hearts, made weak by fate but strong in will.

Beneath the surface of Ulysses' speech lie a series of quiet but profound turning points and revelations. He begins by admitting that his past experiences—both joyful and painful—define who he is, and that the horizon of the unknown will always elude him no matter how far he travels. His recognition that merely breathing is not the same as truly living becomes the emotional core of his decision to leave Ithaca again. When he formally turns to acknowledge Telemachus, it marks a decisive pivot from private self-reflection to outward action, as Ulysses accepts he must hand off his duties and move on. The poem's final section is full of honest admissions: the crew is old, their great strength is gone, and death is a real possibility on the voyage ahead. Yet Ulysses' insistence on 'that which we are, we are' and his declaration of one equal temper of heroic hearts transforms these admissions into a defiant and moving resolve.
