Thirteen-year-old Estrella and her migrant family arrive at a new bungalow in California, where they meet Alejo, a teenage boy working nearby in the peach orchards. Estrella and Alejo grow close picking grapes together in the fields, sharing a quiet romantic moment during an eclipse. When a crop duster accidentally sprays Alejo with toxic pesticide and he falls gravely ill, Petra takes him in, but folk remedies fail and his condition worsens. The family makes a grueling journey to a local clinic, only to find that the nurse cannot treat Alejo and demands ten dollars — leaving nothing for gas to reach the hospital. Driven past the point of endurance, Estrella seizes a crowbar and forces the nurse to return the money, then ensures Alejo reaches the hospital in Corazón. The novel closes on uncertainty, with Petra's faith shattered alongside the broken statue of Jesus, and Estrella standing alone on the barn rooftop.

Back at the bungalow, Perfecto thinks about leaving that same night but cannot bring himself to act.

Before the family even enters the bungalow, Alejo and Gumecindo are already present, hiding in the peach trees and watching the station wagon arrive. The novel fills in the history behind Estrella's family — her father's abandonment, her complicated relationship with Perfecto's tools, and a violent falling-out with a girl named Maxine that forced the family to move. Smaller but revealing events show the characters' inner lives: Alejo admires Estrella from across the fields, Perfecto secretly mourns his dead lover Mercedes, and Estrella first picks up a crowbar out of fear of the border patrol. As the crisis unfolds at the clinic, secondary details illuminate the larger stakes — Perfecto's failed attempt to barter labor for the visit fee, and his quiet emotional response to Estrella's sincere thanks at the hospital. The pool closes on Perfecto paralyzed outside the bungalow, unable to leave and unable to commit, as the family's future hangs suspended.

The novel's turning points begin in the past, with a flashback to young Estrella holding her family together through sheer force of will during a moment of hunger and despair. As the present unfolds, small but significant revelations accumulate: Alejo's unnoticed devotion in the grape fields, Estrella's spontaneous generosity toward a stranger, and a tense exchange on the work truck that hints at her grief over her absent father. Deeper into the story, critical discoveries shift the stakes — Petra's secret pregnancy is exposed, her healing remedies fail Alejo entirely, and Estrella is forced into an agonizing choice between competing loyalties. At the clinic, a chain of events — the nurse's refusal to barter, Perfecto surrendering all their money — pushes Estrella to her most decisive and dangerous act, and her emergence from the hospital feels almost supernatural. The pool closes in Chapter Five as Petra's broken faith becomes tangible through failed prayers and displaced documents, before she pulls her daughter close one final time and Estrella walks forward into the dark alone.

The key decisions, discoveries, and emotional shifts that drive Estrella toward her final transformation.
