Lowen and Jeremy grow steadily closer through shared meals, quiet confessions, and mutual care for Crew, even as the house seems to conspire against them. A locked door, an unresponsive Verity, and a young boy's accidental injury each push Lowen deeper into a situation she cannot walk away from. These secondary moments are the scaffolding that holds the thriller's tension in place throughout the novel.

Each chapter of Verity's manuscript peels back a more disturbing layer, from a dream interpreted as prophecy to a planned drowning, and Lowen's own buried traumas surface alongside them. Jeremy's quiet confessions — his anger at Verity, his hand in bringing Lowen to Vermont — deepen their bond and blur the line between grief and complicity. The turning point arrives when Lowen chooses to stop Jeremy mid-choke and instead direct him toward a calculated, deliberate method of murder. The final revelation, delivered in Verity's own handwriting, suggests that everything they acted on may have been fiction all along — and Lowen decides to bury that truth forever.
