War Stories follows Jacob Firestone across two timelines — his journey as a teenage soldier in World War II and his return to France as a 93-year-old veteran. The novel begins when Jacob receives an invitation to be honored in the French village he helped liberate 75 years earlier, drawing him and his great-grandson Trevor into a transatlantic journey. Along the way, Jacob recounts the brutal realities of the war, from the chaos of D-Day to the grinding hedgerow battles and the deadly mission at the Aisne River bridge. The trip grows darker as Jacob edges closer to Sainte-Régine, the site of his greatest wartime failure — a careless decision that led to the deaths of the Lafleur family who had sheltered him. The story builds toward Jacob's public confession at the ceremony, where he finally confronts decades of guilt and asks Juliette Lafleur for the forgiveness he was denied seventy-five years ago.

Jacob forces Daniel to stop the car near the French hedgerows, and a grateful local farmer offers them a picnic basket.

Trevor spots the same blonde girl standing outside the Saint-Lô hotel window, and the family's car tires are slashed overnight.

Jacob stops the car at a roadside cistern and declares drinking from it his single best memory of the entire war.

Juliette gains access to the Firestones' Paris hotel room and leaves a gift-wrapped fake alarm clock bomb with a threatening note.

Jacob produces a French Resistance ring on the drive to Paris, hinting at a deep personal connection to the French war effort.

While Pool 1 focuses on Jacob's wartime story and its resolution, Pool 2 traces the present-day journey of the Firestone family as they travel from Connecticut to Sainte-Régine, following the path of Jacob's wartime service. The trip is filled with personal moments — from Jacob's tattered duffel bag falling apart in Atlanta to his insistence on stopping at a roadside cistern he remembers fondly from the war. As the family travels through France, they become aware that someone is following them, leaving dead birds on their car and slashing their tires. These threats come from Juliette and Philippe Lafleur, teenagers who harbor a 75-year-old grudge against Jacob and use increasingly bold tactics to drive him away from the ceremony. The tension escalates right up to the ceremony itself, where Philippe's dramatic act with a paint gun finally forces Jacob's long-hidden secret into the open.

Enraged by his own blunder, Jacob encounters a young fleeing German soldier but chooses mercy over revenge, and the act leaves him feeling reborn.

The book's epilogue flashes back to four young soldiers confidently packing their duffel bags at Fort Benning before shipping overseas.

Pool 3 highlights the critical moments of choice and revelation scattered across Jacob's story — the decisions that define who he becomes and the discoveries that force both him and Trevor to see the war clearly. Jacob's story begins with an act of deception and nearly ends before it starts when he barely makes it onto the troop train. From the Atlantic crossing to the foxholes of England, each event chips away at the romantic notion of soldiering that Trevor — and young Jacob — both carry. The liberation of Paris and the brutal mission at the Aisne River bridge mark a turning point in Jacob's understanding of what war costs, culminating in his fatal misjudgment with a German soldier outside the Lafleur farm. These events culminate in Jacob's emotional reckoning with René, his act of mercy toward a fleeing enemy soldier, and — in a quietly devastating epilogue — a glimpse of four young friends who still believe nothing can touch them.

The pivotal decisions, discoveries, and emotional reckonings that shape Jacob's journey from soldier to broken old man to forgiven.
