A chorus of young Black women across northern cities collectively dreams of freedom, their everyday acts of autonomy forming a radical movement.

Following the Great Migration northward, young Black women and men sought freedom and self-determination in Philadelphia and New York City. Reformers, sociologists, and law enforcement responded to this migration with surveillance, criminalization, and violence. Ida B. Wells fought back through legal action and journalism, while Mattie Jackson paid the price of her freedom with institutionalization in a brutal reformatory. A night of street violence in the Tenderloin sparked days of anti-Black riots and ultimately the formation of Black Harlem as a refuge community. Across New York and Philadelphia, ordinary Black women like Harriet Powell, Esther Brown, and Eva Perkins were arrested on false or exaggerated charges simply for living freely. Beyond the main headlines, the lives of Black migrants in northern cities were shaped by intimate struggles and small acts of defiance. Writers like Paul Laurence Dunbar and Ida B. Wells witnessed and documented the violence, while women like Mattie Jackson and her mother Caroline were caught in cycles of institutional abuse with little recourse. Reformers like Helen Parrish attempted to impose respectability on women like Mamie Shepherd, who refused to be tamed or redirected. In the wake of anti-Black riots, Black New Yorkers created their own haven in Harlem, while white sympathizer Mary White Ovington was condemned for choosing to live among them. Ordinary moments of hope and heartbreak—from young Annabel's dreams of the chorus to Trixie Smith's unjust arrest—reveal the texture of daily life and the constant negotiation between freedom and punishment. The Bedford Hills revolt and the free-love philosophy of Hubert Harrison capture how these individual struggles eventually erupted into collective defiance.

Saidiya Hartman's own scholarly commitment shapes the book's opening turn: a resolve to center the beauty rather than the misfortune of forgotten Black women's lives. Through figures like Ida B. Wells, Mattie Jackson, W. E. B. Du Bois, and Gladys Bentley, the book traces pivotal moments of decision and revelation—a lawsuit filed, a child abandoned, a gender identity criminalized. Hartman also pauses the narrative to meditate on language itself, using dictionary-entry chapters on 'manual' and 'wayward' to reframe the meaning of Black labor and Black rebellion. The emotional arc passes through Edna Thomas's fractured marriage and secret love, and through Eva Perkins's abuse and imprisonment as her husband Aaron wages a desperate letter-writing campaign from outside. These revelations expose how structural forces—legal, economic, and social—continuously work to reclaim the freedom that Black women build for themselves. The book's arc closes with Mabel Hampton, whose years of queer self-invention in Harlem are ultimately crushed by the Great Depression, crystallizing the cycle of freedom and repression at the heart of the narrative.
