Drawing heavily on Rosie's private journals, this pool reconstructs the hidden past that set the novel's crisis in motion, beginning with Russ's chivalrous defense of Rosie and the romantic affair that followed. Rosie's entries chronicle the painful consequences of their secret—an unexpected pregnancy, hush money, and her mother LeeAnn's fierce intervention—that forced an eight-year separation before their passionate reunion. In the present, the FBI's financial investigation produces its own revelations, from the confiscation of Rosie's hidden cash to the arrest of the island's property managers. Rosie's later journal entries expose the full scope of the criminal enterprise: Russ's confession about money laundering, Todd Croft's menacing visit, and Rosie's ultimatum demanding a real future together. Her final entry, written before the fatal helicopter trip she hoped would bring a proposal, stands in tragic contrast to the catastrophic present-day reality. The pool closes with Huck abandoning the doorway to run back up the villa stairs and stand beside Irene in her darkest moment.
