Easton and Angus arrive in Boston, where Kent escorts them to a hotel to meet Denton and Ingold.

Denton explains his cousin Oscar vanished after exploring Hollow Elk Mine and reads aloud Oscar's letters describing strange lights and sounds.

Easton agrees to travel to Hollow Elk Mine to help Denton investigate what happened to Oscar.

The group arrives at Hollow Elk Mine and finds Oscar's campsite completely abandoned and deserted.

Ingold ignites a flame that runs briefly along the mine wall, demonstrating the explosive firedamp gas present underground.

The telegram clerk in Flatwood describes a tall, goggled, silent stranger who paid for Oscar's telegram with a pocketful of money.

Easton hears squelching noises deep in the mine and blackdamp gas causes hallucinations before Ingold drags them to safety.

The group clears a debris pile and discovers an empty mining outfit laid out face-down on the mine floor.

Easton wakes at night and impulsively follows the red light into the mine, encountering a flat, human-shaped creature.

Elijah arrives at camp to report that a woman named Louisa has been badly injured and Lee Mason killed.

The group descends a narrow, spiraling tunnel and finds a large underground cave with a strange pearl-like floor.

Denton chases the red light and calls out Oscar's name at a retreating figure dressed in mining gear and goggles.

Angus draws his gun and forces the goggled figure to remove its goggles, revealing it is not human.

The entity communicates by writing on a slate, explaining it is separated from a vast consciousness called the Wholeness.

Thunder transforms into the long-lost Sentry and is burned; the group later drills through the cave floor so Fragment can rejoin the Wholeness.

The novella follows Easton and their companions as they answer Denton's plea to investigate the disappearance of his cousin Oscar at an abandoned coal mine in West Virginia. As the group explores Hollow Elk Mine, they encounter toxic gases, strange sounds, and a red light that pulls them deeper underground. Their search leads to the discovery of Fragment, a sentient entity separated from an ancient collective consciousness called the Wholeness, who communicates by writing on a slate and asks for help rejoining his kind. Fragment's companion Thunder is unmasked as the long-lost Sentry, a corrupted piece of the Wholeness that has been preying violently on the surrounding community. After the Sentry is defeated, the group works to drill through the cave floor so Fragment can finally reunite with the Wholeness. The resolution brings closure to Oscar's fate and Fragment's long isolation while permanently reshaping how the characters understand the boundary between monstrosity and personhood.

The major events that drive the central mystery of Hollow Elk Mine.

Easton reflects that Denton has crossed an ocean to seek people with specific experience facing supernatural nightmares.

On the train, Denton asks Easton privately how they would prefer their gender to be addressed while in America.

Ingold outlines the dangers of firedamp and blackdamp gases during the train journey toward West Virginia.

After briefly entering the mine, the group agrees that no one will enter alone and plans to retrieve headlamps.

Elijah confronts the group in a poor section of Flatwood, questioning their intentions before directing them to Roger's house.

The group discovers a handwritten warning note at camp urging them to leave the mine or face danger.

Easton and Ingold examine Lee Mason's hollowed-out body and determine the wounds do not match a bear attack.

Easton knocks on Roger's door after visiting Louisa but receives no answer, and Thunder does not bark.

Kent breaks from his professional role to tell Easton he is worried about Denton's increasingly erratic behavior.

Denton insists on descending the spiral tunnel alone despite Ingold's warnings, citing his lifelong debt to Oscar.

The group debates privately whether Fragment is dangerous, and Ingold reluctantly admits that fire would likely kill him.

A creature attacks and wounds Easton's horse in the night, but no blood trail can be found the next morning.

Denton arrives at the mine carrying oil to burn Fragment, but his companions intervene and talk him down.

Fragment uses part of himself to line Easton's leg wounds and prevent them from bleeding out before rescue.

Roger chooses to remain near the mine to guard the Wholeness, with Elijah agreeing to support him.

While the main plot drives toward the discovery of Fragment, the story's texture is shaped by smaller yet significant moments of revelation and shifting relationships. From the train journey where Denton carefully broaches Easton's gender identity to the group's anguished private debate about whether Fragment must be destroyed, these events define the characters and the bonds between them. The investigation takes on personal dimensions when Kent voices concern about Denton's wellbeing and Denton's grief over Oscar pushes him toward increasingly desperate decisions. Threats outside the mine, including a nocturnal attack on the horses and the arrival of an anonymous warning note, escalate tension while Fragment's capacity for compassion is quietly established through his act of healing. The pool concludes with Roger choosing to stay and guard the mine, reflecting the novella's theme of community as a stabilizing force against the damage left behind by extractive industry.

The supporting scenes and quiet moments that shape the group's journey.

Denton reveals he visited the mine, found it deserted, and received a long telegram afterward dismissing any supernatural danger.

Easton observes stretches of spectacular natural beauty alternating with stripped, scarred mining valleys during the train journey.

Ingold explains to Easton that he and Denton met when a chemistry experiment went wrong and the two quickly became close.

Roger wakes from heavy drinking and insists a red light in the mine is connected to something bad inside.

Easton notices Thunder does not sniff their offered hand and instead stares blankly, signaling something is deeply wrong with the dog.

Ingold holds a candle near a mine shaft section and it immediately extinguishes, revealing a deadly concentration of blackdamp.

Easton realizes the pearl cave floor is mimicking their appearance rather than reflecting it and insists the group leave.

Fragment demonstrates writing with both hands simultaneously, producing different lines of text at once to communicate more quickly.

Fragment explains the Wholeness once spread across the ocean's surface before retreating underground to survive an ice age.

Fragment names himself Fragment when Easton asks what the group should call him.

A remnant of the Sentry drops from the mine ceiling and pursues Easton, stabbing into their legs with shards of bone.

Easton pulls out a lighter and ignites the firedamp, triggering a large explosion that destroys the pursuing Sentry remnant.

Fragment tells the group the Sentry refused to reunite with him after years of isolation had reshaped its identity.

Oscar's ring is recovered from the Sentry's belongings, confirming to the group that Oscar is dead.

Denton admits to Easton that his relationship with Ingold is genuine and serious, apologizing for never being honest about it.

This pool traces the pivotal revelations and emotional turning points that progressively reframe the story's central mystery. Early clues—from Denton's account of a dismissive telegram to Thunder's unsettling blank stare—signal that something deeply wrong has taken root in the mine. As the investigation deepens, Fragment's origins and the history of the Wholeness come to light, transforming an unknown and frightening presence into a sentient being with genuine needs and a traceable past. The Sentry's corrupted violence is reframed not as inherent evil but as the product of prolonged isolation, a revelation that challenges the characters to extend empathy rather than act on fear. The climactic explosion in the mine and Fragment's act of healing force Denton into true cooperation with the entity he most distrusted. The pool closes with private admissions of vulnerability—Oscar confirmed dead and Denton finally honest about his relationship with Ingold—suggesting that confronting painful truths is what enables genuine connection.
