The mother sees Evacuation Order No. 19 posted around town while out running errands.

The mother kills the family dog with a shovel and buries it in the backyard before evacuating.

The mother packs all the family's belongings into a locked room and prepares travel bags for her children.

The family boards a train transporting Japanese Americans from their California detention center toward Nevada.

Someone hurls a brick through the train window in the middle of the night.

The family arrives at a hot, dusty desert camp enclosed by barbed-wire fences.

The mother warns her son never to touch the fence, look at the sun, or say the Emperor's name aloud.

The family receives letters from the father that have been sliced apart by government censors.

Winter brings flu outbreaks, severe coal shortages, and freezing nights to the internment camp.

An Army recruiter visits the camp as the second summer of the family's detention begins.

The family returns home to find their rosebush dead and the house left in a mess by former renters.

The mother is turned away without a job offer at every place she applies in the community.

The father finally arrives home by train, but he looks far older than his years after years of detention.

The father grows paranoid and suspicious, warning his children that neighbors and strangers could be informers.

The father delivers a bitter, sarcastic fake confession listing every crime his interrogators ever suspected him of committing.

A Japanese American mother sees a government evacuation order posted around Berkeley and begins the devastating process of complying. She makes brutal practical decisions — killing the family dog, locking away every belonging — before putting her children on a train bound for a desert internment camp. There the family endures years of harsh conditions, strict rules, and emotional erosion while the father remains detained at a separate camp across the country. When the war ends, the family returns home only to find their community refuses to welcome them back, and the mother is shut out of the job market despite desperate effort. The father eventually arrives home, but years of detention have aged him beyond recognition and left him paranoid and unable to reenter his former life. In a final bitter monologue, he sarcastically confesses to every crime his interrogators suspected, exposing the racial injustice that rendered his innocence irrelevant from the start.

The family's core journey through evacuation, internment, and return.

The mother buys packing supplies at a store instead of the groceries she originally set out to purchase.

The daughter asks her mother whether something is wrong with her face after being stared at by classmates all day.

The boy asks where the family dog is when he comes home from school, and his mother does not answer.

After packing the entire house, the mother sits alone in the dark empty living room and can only laugh.

The family pins identification numbers to their collars when they arrive at the evacuation gathering point.

The girl tells a kind elderly Japanese man on the train about the blue scarf and shoes her father brought home from Paris.

The girl notices her mother is no longer wearing lipstick, and the mother says she has used it all up.

The girl reads her father's heavily censored postcards late at night while her brother sleeps beside her.

The girl wakes her sleeping brother so he can watch a herd of wild horses crossing the plains outside the train window.

The girl writes cheerful letters to her friends outside the fence, pretending that she is enjoying life at the camp.

The boy listens through the thin barrack wall and gets to know his elderly senile neighbor, Mrs. Kato, who does not know where she is.

The mother asks her children whether they had a stove in their old home, revealing that her memory is slipping.

The mother finally finds employment cleaning house for a wealthy family in a different town.

The mother buys her children new furniture at the Salvation Army so each of them can have a room of their own.

The children give up their search for the lost rosebush but hold onto the belief that it is blooming somewhere in a stranger's backyard.

Even before leaving Berkeley, small moments reveal the human cost of the evacuation: the mother's midnight laughter alone in an empty room, the daughter's bewildered question about why strangers stare at her face, and the son's unanswered question about the missing dog. On the train, the girl clings to her father's memory through censored postcards and shares stories with a kind elderly gentleman, while mundane details like a finished tube of lipstick quietly mark the passage of time. Inside the camp, the children find small ways to maintain their old selves — the girl through cheerful letters to friends, the boy through a barrack wall's strange companionship — while the mother's grip on memory begins to slip. After the war, the mother rebuilds a fragile sense of normalcy by finding work and furnishing her children's rooms with salvaged furniture. The final image the children carry with them is of their mother's lost rosebush — never found, but imagined still blooming somewhere beautiful — a symbol of everything they grieve and still, impossibly, hope for.

The quiet moments of identity, memory, and loss along the way.

The mother pauses at the store and considers buying a shovel without explaining her intentions to anyone.

The mother opens the cage and releases the family's pet bird into the wild before leaving for the camp.

The children return home from school to find their bags already packed and their mother ready to leave.

A soldier stops the girl from peeking out the train window and tells her to keep the window shade drawn.

The boy mentions he left his umbrella and several other possessions behind at the first detention center.

The family is assigned a bare barrack room near the fence where there is no running water.

The boy whispers the Emperor's name to himself repeatedly, quietly defying the camp's strict prohibition.

The boy holds his absent father's old Oxford shoes to feel connected to the fading memory of him.

The father's scent gradually disappears from the shoes the boy brought to the camp, severing his last physical connection.

The boy daydreams that his father has arrived at the camp and is asking him what it has been like to be there.

The children discover that their mother was cheated out of all rental income by the property manager during their absence.

Former neighbors pretend not to see the family on the street after the war, refusing to acknowledge their return.

The children lie awake late at night listening for any sound that might mean their father has come home.

The family receives word that the father will finally be arriving home after years of detention across the country.

The father's anguished monologue closes with the exhausted, bitter final line: "I'm sorry. Now can I go?"

A cryptic pause at a hardware store, the release of a caged bird, and two children finding their bags already packed signal the unspoken turning points of the family's forced departure. On the train and inside the camp, small rebellions and private acts of memory — a boy whispering a forbidden name, pressing his face to his absent father's shoes — reveal how the family fights to preserve their inner lives under crushing institutional pressure. The gradual fading of the father's scent from his shoes marks the moment his children begin losing him not just physically but emotionally, replaced only by daydream and fantasy. Back home, the discovery of financial betrayal and the deliberate coldness of former neighbors force a reckoning with how little has truly been restored by the war's end. The news that their father will at last return raises desperate hope, but what comes home is a man transformed by trauma beyond what the children know how to grieve. The father's final monologue — closing with a plea to simply be allowed to leave — captures the full, exhausted weight of what was taken and never given back.

The key decisions, discoveries, and emotional shifts that define the family's experience.
