A chance encounter with a coffee shop modeling ad leads Anna to identify Caleb Ford as the abductor, and Cameron is found alive but exhausted in the woods outside town. Caleb later confronts Anna alone in her cabin, confesses to a string of murders, and is shot dead when he attacks her. Anna's investigation is guided as much by intuition and dreams as by evidence, beginning with her first night vision of a hunted girl and a dream of her adoptive father urging her to follow the signs. Key revelations arrive slowly — Cameron's discovery of her father's affair, the psychic's accurate premonition of Shannan's death, and Anna's unsettling theory about how traumatized children attract predators. The investigation's emotional core emerges when Anna presses Cameron's mother to confront the possibility that Cameron was sexually abused during family gatherings in Malibu, a disclosure that reshapes the case entirely. A dream of her adoptive father and a suspiciously staged modeling photograph together push Anna toward the break that finally exposes Caleb as the killer. After Cameron is rescued and Caleb is dead, Anna discloses to Tally the truth behind her daughter Sarah's death, releasing the grief she has carried alone throughout the novel. The story closes with Anna pausing at the Time and the Maiden statue and reinterpreting the weeping girl not as a symbol of doom but as a figure of survival before driving south toward home.
