This pool traces the central arc of John and Naomi's relationship against the perilous backdrop of the westward journey. It begins with their charged first meeting in St. Joseph and follows the wagon train through early romantic sparks, devastating cholera deaths, and a growing bond that leads John to propose at South Pass. Their marriage at Fort Bridger is the story's emotional high point, swiftly shattered when a Shoshoni attack kills Naomi's family and leaves her and baby Wolfe in captivity. John must use every skill and connection he possesses to pursue Naomi, navigating a Shoshoni council that returns his wife but not her infant brother. After months of limbo in a Shoshoni winter camp, Wolfe's death finally frees John and Naomi to find her surviving brothers and build the life they had always hoped for.

This pool follows the supporting moments and encounters that defined John and Naomi's world on the Oregon Trail. It begins with John's formative backstory—his Pawnee mother delivering him to his white father as a child—before moving through the practical and social challenges of the journey westward. Along the way, John faces racial hostility from Lawrence Caldwell, negotiates tense encounters with Pawnee and Sioux bands, and watches Naomi use her gift for portraiture to broker deals that benefit them both. The meeting with Washakie at Fort Bridger and John's role in defusing a standoff between Mormons and Shoshoni establish the friendship that will later prove lifesaving. After Naomi's captivity and rescue, this pool covers the quieter restoration of their intimacy during the buffalo hunt and the small mercy of Washakie's report that Wolfe is alive and growing.

This pool highlights the pivotal revelations and emotional turning points that shift the direction of the story. Early disclosures about John's heritage—his father's confession of love for his Pawnee mother and Jennie's parting wisdom about love—establish the emotional stakes before the journey even begins. Key trail moments carry fresh weight: Wolfe's birth, Naomi's growing self-knowledge through her art, and John's story of his Two Feet identity all mark internal shifts as important as any physical milestone. The story pivots sharply when Naomi proposes and John rejects her, then turns again when Winifred's counsel at South Pass finally moves John to act. The final stretch of the pool covers the aftermath of captivity—John's race to reclaim Naomi's drawings, the relief of confirmed news about her body, and the spirit-world footprints that arrive with Wolfe's death and free Naomi to go home.
