Research shows that women avoid bending to examine low-shelf merchandise, a phenomenon Underhill names the butt-brush factor.

Studies show that small-print packaging, low-placed shelving, and narrow aisles systematically cost retailers sales from elderly customers.

Underhill defines the Big Three of retail — store design, merchandising, and operations — showing that changing one disrupts all others.

Research reveals that customers perceive waits beyond roughly two minutes as failures, causing overall store satisfaction to plummet.

Envirosell opens international offices in Milan, Brazil, and Japan, transforming into a global retail research company.

Underhill concludes that shopping is entertainment and that brick-and-mortar stores must innovate continuously to survive the rise of e-commerce.

Paco Underhill founds Envirosell after recognizing that how a store is managed is as scientifically interesting as what it sells. Drawing on William Whyte's pioneering urban space research, Underhill builds a methodology of in-store observation that reveals how little retail executives understand about their own customers. Early case studies — from a CBS Records store to the Staples chain — show that small, data-driven changes to layouts and signage can boost sales dramatically. Core findings emerge: shoppers ignore the entrance decompression zone, drift right through stores, carry limited items in two hands, and stop reading complex signage. The book then examines how men and women shop differently, how elderly customers are systematically underserved, and how the three pillars of store design, merchandising, and operations must work in harmony. Underhill closes by tracking Envirosell's global expansion and warning that brick-and-mortar stores must reinvent themselves as entertainment destinations to survive the challenge of e-commerce.

The core discoveries that built the science of shopping.

Envirosell finds that displays placed in a crowded store entrance lose sales because shoppers get bumped and abandon browsing.

Video surveillance reveals that shoplifters at a record store arrive carrying bags from non-local retailers to conceal stolen goods.

After Envirosell moves aspirin away from a cold drinks aisle jammed with teenagers, the drugstore's aspirin sales rise 20%.

A Grand Central Station newsstand loses revenue because it lacks a counter where commuters can set down items while paying.

Research shows that at fast-food restaurants, 61% of time spent looking at the menu board happens after customers have already ordered.

A rack of store brochures ignored by shoppers on entry draws heavy use when turned to face customers as they leave.

Women begin buying men's underwear for comfort, eventually pushing manufacturers to redesign women's undergarments with wider elastic bands.

Smart video rental retailers spike the returns cart with high-profit titles before re-shelving, increasing rentals of those items.

Research shows that men accompanying women on shopping trips cause women to spend less time in stores, reducing overall purchases.

Greeting card stores lose sales because cards shelved close to the floor force women to bend, discouraging extended browsing.

Underhill describes how cosmetics departments shifted away from hard-sell makeover-style service toward open-sell self-testing displays.

After Radio Shack moves hearing-aid batteries from floor level to a higher shelf, elderly customers can reach them and sales improve.

Bookstore children's sections fail because they provide no seating where parents can sit with kids to test-read books before buying.

Research reveals that 90% of new food products fail simply because shoppers never had the chance to taste-test them in stores.

A French supermarket replaces shelved aspirin bottles with a large label photo overhead and a bin of loose bottles, improving legibility.

Behind every major principle in shopping science lies a specific field observation, and this pool collects the concrete case studies that built Underhill's theories. From spotting shoplifters through video cameras at a record store to watching commuters at Grand Central Station fumble for change with no counter to rest their purchases on, the discoveries are grounded in real retail moments. Chapters on signage, movement, and gender reveal that brochure racks work better facing exits, fast-food menu boards are mostly read after ordering, and men slow down their partners' shopping trips. The pool follows the book's progression through women's shopping preferences, elderly shopper challenges, and the sensory needs of all customers. By the time Underhill reaches the operational chapters, the examples range from a French supermarket's clever aspirin bin to the persistent failure of bookstore children's sections that don't provide chairs for parents. Each example reinforces the central argument that small, observable details make an enormous difference to the bottom line.

Specific field discoveries and case studies behind the research.

While studying a CBS Records store, Underhill realizes that how a shop is managed is itself a worthy scientific subject.

Discovering that cassette buyers first visit the LP section to read larger album covers leads to widened record aisles and higher overall sales.

An executive's inability to define conversion rate exposes how little retail leaders understand about their own stores' performance.

Research finds that shoppers consistently overestimate the time they spend inside stores by roughly double the actual duration.

Underhill finds that in-store greeters should wait about one minute before approaching customers, giving shoppers time to orient themselves.

Research shows that items placed just to the right of best-sellers gain more shopper attention, exploiting most people's natural right-handedness.

Underhill observes that luxury malls in São Paulo and Dubai are pioneering retail innovations that Western stores have yet to attempt.

This pool traces the aha moments and strategic revelations that give Why We Buy its intellectual spine. The journey begins with Underhill recognizing during an early client study that store management itself is a science, and quickly builds through a series of counter-intuitive discoveries — that shoppers overestimate their own in-store time, that conversion rates are unknown even to senior executives, and that greeters must wait a full minute before speaking. Mid-book turning points focus on how right-handedness shapes shelf behavior, how drive-through eating habits forced restaurants to redesign their parking lots, and how touching merchandise triggers a feeling of ownership that drives purchases. Later revelations expose how well-intentioned retail decisions — removing checkout counter space for more shoe displays, painting stores dark burgundy — backfire spectacularly when the Big Three are not considered together. The pool concludes with Envirosell's own transformation: a New Yorker profile that brought international recognition, and a global tour revealing that the most innovative retail ideas are now emerging in the developing world rather than the West.
