The rescue ship arrives, the crew salvages the saved seeds, and the Salt family sails away from Shearwater Island for the last time.

Rowan Jones washes ashore on the remote Shearwater Island after her boat wrecks, and the Salt family reluctantly takes her in. As she recovers, she grows suspicious of Dominic Salt, sensing that he and his children are hiding the truth about her missing husband, Hank. Rowan gradually bonds with the family while quietly gathering clues, and a dangerous whale encounter draws her and Dom into a fragile romance. When Rowan finally discovers Hank alive and imprisoned beneath the failing seed vault, the concealed truth about his violence and imprisonment is forced into the open. A catastrophic storm causes the vault to flood, and Orly becomes trapped inside when Hank escapes and locks him in. Rowan sacrifices her own life to save Orly, and the surviving family sails away from the island carrying her memory and the seeds they managed to rescue.

While the main plot turns on secrets and survival, a parallel story unfolds through the family's daily rhythms and emotional struggles. Raff wrestles with his grief over Alex while Fen isolates herself on the beach, and Orly quietly serves as the family's emotional anchor. A pivotal bonfire forces Dom to finally confront his years of frozen grief over his wife Claire, and Rowan's practical warmth begins drawing the fractured family back together. Together they organise a feast, dance under the stars, and begin to feel something like hope. When the crisis erupts at the vault's end, Hank's final attack on Fen is repelled, and Dom is left holding Rowan's body as Orly speaks a quiet farewell to her spirit.

The quieter moments of survival, grief, and connection that hold the story together.

Beneath the surface of Wild Dark Shore, a series of concealed truths accumulate until they can no longer be contained. Early clues — blood on a scrubbed floor, a startled reaction to a photograph, a child's veiled warning — hint that something has been hidden from Rowan. As the story progresses, the full picture emerges in pieces: the deaths of Tom and Naija, Alex's suicide, Hank's violence toward Fen, and the terrible choice Dom made the night Orly was born. Characters are forced to reckon with decisions made out of fear, love, and desperation, from Orly's destruction of the communications equipment to his quiet defiance in choosing biodiversity over food crops. The bonfire that consumes Claire's belongings marks an emotional turning point for the whole family, while Dom's shattering realization at the airshaft — that he has been speaking to his own guilt, not Claire's ghost — signals his long-overdue release from grief.
