Before Anna even speaks, the conspirators are already unraveling, sizing each other up in the first-class lounge and accusing one another of orchestrating the gathering. The group's desperate attempts to escape—pulling the emergency brake, storming the locomotive—are foiled, including by Dante's surprising intervention on Anna's behalf. Reggie's secret discovery of Anna's hidden knife marks the first sign he is not what he claims, while Edith's private confession about Jack and each subsequent investigation deepen the atmosphere of suspicion aboard the train. Herb's violent knife attack on Anna and his brutal murder escalate the danger, and the discovery of Anna's train pin at the crime scene threatens to frame her for the killings. Amid the chaos, Anna secretly plots with Sal and Jack to expose Seamus, and Sal's champagne-bottle ambush of Reggie brings the secondary conspiracies crashing to a halt. Reggie's final confession in Chicago—shielding Seamus from blame—closes the pool with an act of complicated, imperfect grace.

Anna's iron resolve was forged by Aunt Retta's brutal emotional training, a foundation the novel returns to as Anna repeatedly battles her own violent impulses during the journey. Each revelation aboard the Phoenix reframes the conspiracy: Dante secretly sent the damning evidence to Retta, Kenneth's true motive was romantic jealousy over Margaret, and Sal acted only under blackmail involving compromising photographs. The discovery of a fake blood capsule in Judd's real corpse forces Anna to accept a second killer is at work, a killer who turns out to be Reggie himself, whose grief over his father's death in the same explosion drove him to murder under cover of FBI duty. The physical confrontation on the roof culminates in Anna shooting through the observation car's glass, and Kenneth's confession in the locomotive reveals the full, devastating truth about Tommy's parentage and Arthur's murder. The pool closes as Anna steps into a new future, accepting an FBI career and leaving trains—and the past—behind.
