World Without End begins with Thomas Langley burying a dangerous royal secret, setting the novel's central mystery in motion and binding young Merthin to a lifelong oath. The collapse of the old bridge kills Prior Anthony and reshapes the lives of Gwenda, Caris, Merthin, and Ralph, sparking decades of conflict between the town and the priory. Godwyn's rise to power through blackmail and his corrupt prosecution of Caris for witchcraft force both her and Merthin onto radically altered life paths. The arrival of the Black Death tests Kingsbridge's leadership, exposing Godwyn's cowardice and allowing Caris to emerge as the town's indispensable guiding force. Ralph's violent ambitions culminate in the murder of his wife and the sacking of the nunnery, while Caris and Merthin work to secure the town's independence from corrupt church authority. The story closes with the two protagonists using a buried royal secret as leverage to remove a final threat, standing together atop Merthin's completed cathedral as symbols of a wholly transformed Kingsbridge.

The secondary events of World Without End trace the brutal consequences of power misused against ordinary people, particularly Gwenda and Wulfric. From Joby selling his daughter to outlaws to Ralph's rape of Annet and his repeated escapes from justice, the feudal system consistently fails those with the least status. Gwenda's hidden pregnancy and her marriage to Wulfric establish a decades-long family secret that Ralph will later try to exploit for control. The plague strips Kingsbridge of key figures including Mother Cecilia and Mair, reshaping the priory's leadership and deepening the town's crisis at its most vulnerable moment. Ralph's elevation to lord of Shiring after William's plague death consolidates his power even as his cruelty and recklessness grow more dangerous. The pool closes with the revelation of Sam's true parentage, a secret Gwenda has kept for over two decades, finally surfacing to save her condemned son's life.

World Without End is built on a chain of revelations and forced choices whose consequences ripple across four decades. From Godwyn's blackmail of Bishop Richard to Caris's decision to abort her pregnancy, characters are constantly navigating impossible positions shaped by the era's rigid hierarchies of gender and status. Ralph's assault on Annet and Wulfric's violent defense of her set off a vendetta that shadows the entire novel, while Prior Anthony's dismissal of Caris's bridge-funding idea crystallizes how thoroughly women are excluded from power. Merthin's return from plague-ravaged Florence reunites him with Caris just as the epidemic reaches England, and Caris's public challenge to Godwyn in church marks the decisive moment when secular pragmatism begins to overcome religious authority. The discovery of Godwyn's hidden treasury and Ralph's forced marriage to Phillipa show how violence and coercion sustain the old order even as it crumbles. The final revelation — that Edward II never died — gives Caris and Merthin the leverage they need to achieve a lasting peace, and the novel ends with them atop the cathedral Merthin secretly carved in Caris's honor.

The discoveries and pivotal decisions whose consequences echoed across the entire novel.
