Plot Summary

Sisters Amber Ruffin, a comedy writer and performer based in New York City, and Lacey Lamar, her older sister living in Omaha, Nebraska, co-author this memoir-essay collection cataloging the racist encounters Lacey experiences on a near-daily basis. The book alternates between their voices, with Amber providing comedic commentary and context while Lacey recounts the stories firsthand. Together, they present decades of incidents illustrating the depth and frequency of everyday racism Black Americans face.

In the preface and introduction, Amber establishes the book's premise. She describes Lacey as a "lightning rod" for racist behavior: small, polite, and Black in ways that make people feel they can say whatever they want to her. Since moving from Omaha to New York, Amber has largely forgotten the relentless racism of being the only Black person at a Midwestern workplace, but Lacey still lives it daily. The sisters explain their motivations: to unburden Lacey by making her stories public, to let Black readers feel less alone, and to give white readers a fuller picture of Black life in a still-segregated Midwestern city. No one dies or is gravely harmed in these stories, but they represent the racism Black people are expected to swallow or forget.

The opening chapter collects widely relatable experiences. Amber recounts being mistaken for Whoopi Goldberg at a Colorado tourist shop; the shopkeeper, so convinced, offered free merchandise. A series of "No Service" stories follows: at Omaha Fashion Week, a designer warned Lacey that her pieces were "really expensive" before Lacey asked a question; at a grocery store, the sisters' mother was insulted by the same treatment and defiantly bought four lobster tails. The chapter's longest story recounts Lacey's repeated harassment by JCPenney loss prevention: a guard twice accused her of shoplifting on false pretenses, and the store admitted no wrongdoing, offering only a $50 gift certificate.

The second chapter escalates to workplace racism. At a birthday potluck, a coworker named Ellen announced she was shocked Lacey chose salad because she had never seen a Black person eat one; most coworkers nodded in agreement. A pivotal childhood story describes Lacey's fifth-grade art teacher destroying her award-winning pastel portrait, refusing to believe a Black child drew it. The teacher spent the rest of the year calling Black students "colored" and telling the class slavery resulted from peer pressure. Nine stories profile Nancy, a racist HR representative who fabricated a complaint against Lacey and Cindy, the only Hispanic employee. The two were reprimanded while seated on a child-sized bench before six people on full-sized chairs. When Lacey returned with written notes proving what management said, they denied their own words, and Lacey was fired. For contrast, Amber describes a thorough, compassionate HR investigation at Late Night with Seth Meyers after a rope near her staff photo was reported as a possible noose, illustrating how HR should function.

The book also follows a group of Black fans who organized AfroComicCon, a Black-focused comic convention in Omaha. Once venue security realized the event centered Black attendees, new rules were imposed: mandatory extra police at the organizers' expense and inflated crowd estimates to justify higher costs. Omaha's larger comic convention, O Comic Con, had allowed attendees to carry real swords with minimal security. AfroComicCon proceeded without incident.

A chapter on medical experiences reveals systemic neglect. A receptionist misdirected Lacey to a WIC office, a government program for low-income parents, without asking a single question. At another appointment, Lacey's regular doctor discovered her iron had been dangerously low three months earlier, but the previous doctor never informed her. The same doctor found that five years earlier, an emergency room had diagnosed a kidney stone and never told Lacey. When Lacey was pregnant, doctors dismissed her repeated concerns until she convinced a nurse to order an ultrasound, which confirmed she needed a C-section.

At a small nursing home, a white kitchen manager named Biff oversaw an entirely Black kitchen staff. When the air conditioner broke, Biff dismissed complaints by declaring the staff was "from Africa" and accustomed to heat. Lacey reported him, and when an investigation revealed the executive director had falsified interview statements, a corporate HR director flew in, re-interviewed everyone, and fired both Biff and the executive director.

An extended section recounts how their parents, James and Theresa Ruffin, both Air Force veterans, built a thriving day-care center in North Omaha in the 1970s serving nearly 200 children. A government inspector named Jill Bratcher, visibly disturbed by the family's success, retaliated after the sisters' mother defended an employee from Bratcher's verbal abuse. Bratcher told parents to pull their children, sent a harsh health inspector from a different zone, and had the facility shut down, costing 22 jobs and childcare for 200 families. The building later reopened under different owners with no renovations. The authors also showcase their mother confronting racism: returning a charity Thanksgiving box from church members who assumed a Black neighborhood was impoverished and lecturing a school librarian about racist imagery.

A chapter on Lacey's experiences in a predominantly white church youth group in the 1980s reveals racism in a religious setting. When a churchgoer lost her car keys, the pastor gathered all eight Black teenagers into a darkened room and repeatedly demanded the thief return them. The keys were eventually found locked in the woman's car; none of the Black children could drive. At a retreat in rural Iowa, a Black speaker spent 90 minutes demonizing Black people and reciting negative stereotypes to an electrified white audience. When the Black teenagers confronted him afterward, he told them the message "wasn't for you." The white teens who had befriended them scrambled to move their belongings away, and the children's father drove to Iowa to bring them home.

Amber inserts a section on policing. In Chicago, a gun-drawn officer stopped her for skipping in an alley; his anger dissipated only when he noticed a white friend watching nearby. At 19, she was pulled over in Council Bluffs, Iowa; upon seeing a terrified young woman rather than the Black man he apparently expected, the officer shifted to a gentle demeanor and released her with a warning. Amber frames this as a defining lesson: The same officer willing to brutalize a Black man might protect a Black girl, making such officers not less guilty but "deceitful."

The final chapter includes the book's most significant story. In Lacey's senior year of high school, her team entered a Midwest Black history quiz competition held in Dubuque, Iowa, during a period of cross burnings in that city. The Black students dominated, and white parents stormed out. A white judge stormed the stage, stopped filming, and declared that "everyone knows white kids are smarter than Black kids." He stripped most of the Black team's points and awarded the victory to a white team.

The book closes with the sisters' reflections. Amber hopes white readers have learned about the depth of everyday racism and that Black readers feel seen. Lacey notes that at nearly every job, coworkers predicted she was about to report a racist incident, and she always did, sometimes getting fired for it. She invites readers to consider that remaining silent is no longer a requirement.
