A Deal With the Elf King (married to Magic, #1)

The story takes place in a world divided into the Natural World, where humans live, and Midscape, a realm of wild magic inhabited by elves and fae. A barrier called the Fade separates the two. Every hundred years, a Human Queen, the only human born with magic, must cross from the island town of Capton to marry the Elf King and sustain Midscape's seasons through her connection to the Natural World. If no queen is found, war and humanity's destruction will follow.

Luella, a 19-year-old herbalist on Capton, works in her shop on the day the elves are expected to arrive. No queen has been identified, and a wasting illness called the Weakness afflicts the town. Her childhood friend Luke, a Keeper of the Fade, the order charged with tending the temple at the border, confesses his love and begs her to flee. Luella reciprocates but refuses, citing the duty she owes to Capton, whose residents funded her herbology education. Over breakfast with Luella's parents, Luke announces without her consent that she has agreed to marry him.

The Elf King rides into the town square on a horse made of shadow and demands the hidden queen be surrendered. When Luella rushes to treat a friend who collapses, the king watches her perform magic she does not recognize as such. He touches her and rips a necklace from her throat, and magic explodes from Luella, transforming the square: Iron lampposts become cherry blossom trees and moss carpets the cobblestones. Luke is exposed as having hidden Luella's identity since childhood using the necklace, which suppressed her magic and blocked the elves' Knowing, their power to learn and use a being's true name. His deception caused the Weakness. Luella insists he face the Capton Council rather than be killed.

A hasty wedding follows. Eldas, the Elf King, uses magic to calm Luella into compliance during the vows. She later confronts him for manipulating her. After a tearful goodbye with her parents, Luella crosses the Fade and emerges into Quinnar, the elf capital, a gray city in deep winter. Eldas gives her a labradorite ring to shield her true name and assigns Rinni, his right hand and general, to escort her to apartments in the castle.

Eldas commands Luella to sit on the redwood throne. The moment she sits, her consciousness plunges into the earth through the throne's roots, and millions of living things in Midscape claw at her, trying to drain her life force. Eldas wrenches her free. When she wakes 12 hours later, Midscape has transformed from winter to spring. Willow, the castle's young healer, explains that the Human Queen channels life force from the Natural World to sustain Midscape.

Luella's early days are marked by hostility. Harrow, Eldas's younger brother, and his friends, including Aria, a half-fae niece of the Fae King, humiliate her with pranks. When Harrow locks her in a room, Luella's rage accidentally causes roses to grow into monstrous vines. During her first magic lesson, Eldas insults her, she slaps him, and he retaliates by using her true name to control her body. Luella instinctively changes her true name and breaks free. In the castle laboratory, Willow shows Luella journals kept by past queens, and Luella begins studying them.

Using knowledge from the journals, Luella attempts to escape through the Fade. Lost in the darkness, she encounters a large wolf with golden eyes. The wolf leads her to a keystone, an ancient stone anchoring the barrier. Eldas finds her and explains that she must keep sitting on the throne to sustain Midscape and must return to the Natural World at midsummer to recharge her magic. After the coronation in three months, she will be permanently bound to Midscape. Luella proposes a deal: She will find a way to end the cycle of queens so no future woman is taken. Eldas agrees, demands secrecy, and sets the coronation as the deadline. The wolf follows them back, and Luella names him Hook.

Eldas teaches Luella to manage her magic through guided contact with the throne. She secretly heals Harrow when he arrives severely ill, using a rare plant called heartroot. Rinni takes Luella into Quinnar in disguise, and a fae assailant kidnaps her on the way back. Hook and Eldas rescue her. The attacker belonged to the Acolytes of the Wild Wood, a group of rebel fae. Luella suspects Aria was involved, but Eldas dismisses the concern.

Luella arranges a dinner with Eldas. Over faerie mead, she removes his crown and asks to meet the man rather than the king. They share a first kiss, but Eldas pulls away, reminding himself she intends to leave. In private, Harrow confesses to Luella that he has been using glimmer, a fae-made substance that heightens connection to the world of the dead. She promises to help him. The toll of the throne worsens, draining more of Luella's life force with each session.

Eldas takes Luella to the queen's cottage, a private retreat with gardens transplanted from the Natural World. Rejuvenated by the natural magic, they grow closer and consummate their relationship. Luella reads a hidden journal and realizes it belongs to Lilian, the first Human Queen. On a carriage ride to Westwatch, a fortress on the fae border held by Eldas's brother Drestin, she begins piecing together how Lilian's magic created the seasonal cycle.

At Westwatch, word arrives that Harrow has been captured near the border. Luella deduces that Aria lured him using glimmer as bait and confesses Harrow's secret to Eldas. They track Harrow into the fae wilds, where Aria holds a blade to Luella's throat and demands the return of fae lands. Luella uses her blood and magic to trap Aria in briar vines while Eldas kills the remaining fae fighters. Aria had been helping the Acolytes out of love for one of the rebels.

Back at Westwatch, Eldas presses Luella to say whether she loves him. She cannot answer, afraid her feelings are a product of circumstance rather than free choice. Eldas interprets her silence as rejection and retreats behind his cold exterior. He returns to Quinnar alone.

In the conservatory, Luella identifies the heartroot as the key. The first queen deliberately withheld this plant from the Natural World, inserting herself as a living substitute to maintain balance. By returning the heartroot, Luella can restore the equilibrium Lilian disrupted and end the cycle. She tells Eldas, who grants her passage through the Fade with only a cold farewell.

In Capton, Luella buries a necklace of polished heartroot bark at the base of the great redwood tree in the temple grounds—the Natural World's counterpart to Midscape's redwood throne—and plants the heartroot around it. Five days later, an elf messenger confirms the throne has sprouted living leaves and the cycle is broken. Luella reunites with her parents but feels displaced. At a celebration in her honor, she realizes she no longer belongs in Capton. Her mother encourages her to follow her heart, and Luella learns Eldas arranged for a healer to replace her, giving her freedom to choose without guilt.

Luella whistles for Hook at the Fade's edge, and the wolf guides her back to Quinnar during the springtime rites. She bursts into the coronation ceremony and declares her love. Eldas responds in kind. Luella explains she had to leave to confirm her feelings were freely chosen. Having had true choice, she chooses him. Eldas crowns her with gilded redwood leaves, declaring her the last queen of spring. They sit on their thrones together, and Luella feels only a quiet whisper of magic across the Fade, confirming that balance is restored.
