A Dog's Journey

W. Bruce Cameron's novel is narrated entirely from the perspective of a dog who retains memories across multiple reincarnated lives. The story follows the dog's evolving sense of purpose as it watches over one human, Clarity (later called CJ), from infancy through old age.

The novel opens on a farm where an aging black Labrador named Buddy lives with Hannah, the widow of his beloved owner, Ethan. Buddy has lived several previous lives under different names, including Toby, Bailey, and Ellie, and believes his purpose of loving Ethan is complete. That summer, Ethan's granddaughter, a toddler named Clarity, visits the farm with her mother, Gloria. When Clarity falls off the dock into a pond, Buddy leaps in and pulls her to safety, but Gloria blames him for knocking the baby in. Buddy later positions himself between Clarity and an agitated horse until Hannah intervenes. Hannah proposes that Clarity stay at the farm so Gloria can pursue her singing career, but Gloria interprets the offer as an attempt to take her child and storms off with Clarity. Meanwhile, Buddy develops bone cancer. Over the following seasons he declines, and one spring morning Hannah drives him to the veterinarian. As the injection takes effect, Buddy's last thought is of Clarity and his hope that she will find a dog to watch over her.

The dog is reborn as a female puppy with non-poodle fur in a litter of poodles. The two non-poodle puppies are given to Jennifer, a foster volunteer, after the owners' young son has a severe asthma attack triggered by dog allergies. Jennifer names them Molly and Rocky. Weeks later, a teenage girl and her friend Trent visit the foster home. When the girl kneels to greet the puppies, Molly recognizes her scent: She is Clarity, now going by CJ. Trent adopts Rocky, and CJ impulsively takes Molly home despite knowing her mother will object.

CJ hides Molly under the basement stairs and trains her to be silent when Gloria is home. When Gloria discovers the dog, CJ threatens to tell a judge about Gloria's pattern of leaving her unsupervised since age 12. Gloria relents, and Molly stays. But Molly observes troubling patterns: CJ binge-eats and forces herself to vomit, obsessively weighs herself, and smokes.

CJ begins dating a boy named Shane, whom Molly instinctively distrusts. Shane persuades CJ to give him a key to the school art building so he can copy a test, but he steals a laptop and other items. Police arrest CJ for the break-in. While CJ is in juvenile detention, Gloria neglects to feed Molly, and Trent discovers the starving dog and cares for her. After CJ's release, Gloria demands she get rid of Molly. CJ moves between friends' houses before negotiating a return.

For community service, CJ works with Andi, a dog trainer researching whether dogs can detect cancer by scent. Molly watches a trained dog and imitates his signal, lying down and crossing her paws when she detects a metallic odor associated with cancer. Andi incorporates Molly into the program. At a Christmas party, Molly signals on a guest who later discovers an early-stage tumor. That same evening, Gloria's boyfriend Giuseppe enters CJ's bedroom uninvited and begins touching her. Molly snarls and lunges, and Giuseppe falls backward. Gloria accuses CJ of lying about the incident.

Gloria secretly drives Molly to an animal shelter, but CJ retrieves her using her microchip. Realizing Gloria will continue to endanger Molly, CJ packs suitcases and drives to California. In Santa Monica, CJ struggles to find work. Her car is broken into, and when police run her ID, they discover she is a runaway minor. CJ is apprehended, and Molly is sent to a shelter. Gloria flies to Los Angeles to retrieve CJ. Back home, CJ discovers that Gloria has spent the entire trust fund left by CJ's deceased father. Enraged, CJ drives off. Shane follows her. CJ reaches for her dropped phone, and the car is struck and flips. Molly is thrown from the seat and dies in CJ's arms.

The dog is reborn as a tiny Chihuahua-Yorkie mix named Max in a crowded New York City shelter. Aggressive and fearful, Max fails to be adopted and is placed on the euthanasia list. At an adoption fair, he spots CJ, now a young woman walking an enormous dog named Duke. On his last adoption day, Max escapes his pen, dashes across traffic, and follows CJ into her apartment building elevator. A shelter worker persuades CJ to adopt him.

CJ works as a dog walker and cycles through unstable living arrangements. Her financial situation collapses, and she brings Max to Trent's New York apartment, claiming she must visit Gloria. Trent senses something is wrong. CJ says an emotional goodbye to Max and disappears.

Weeks later, Trent smuggles Max into a hospital room. CJ attempted to end her life by drinking antifreeze, which destroyed her kidneys. She begins dialysis. Gloria visits but remains self-absorbed. Trent insists CJ live with him during her recovery. Over months, CJ slowly regains strength. One evening, Max detects the metallic cancer scent on Trent's breath and signals by lying down and crossing his paws. CJ connects the behavior to Molly's cancer-detection training and urges Trent to see a doctor. His cancer is caught early and treated successfully.

Trent drives CJ and Max to the Farm to reunite with Hannah and CJ's aunts. Hannah gives CJ a box of birthday cards she wrote every year, documenting the family history CJ missed. On the drive home, CJ tells Trent she loves him. They marry, with Max walking CJ down the aisle. Though her kidney damage prevents CJ from having children, she becomes a psychologist specializing in eating disorders. She receives a kidney transplant that functions for over two decades before chronic rejection sets in and she resumes dialysis. Years pass, and Max dies peacefully in CJ's arms.

The dog is reborn as a beagle-mix puppy at a convent. A nun named Margaret selects him and names him Toby, the same name from his very first life. Margaret trains Toby in a command called "Be Still," which teaches him to lie motionless beside sick and dying patients, and brings him to a hospice as a resident therapy dog. Toby learns to sense when patients are near death and goes to their rooms unbidden.

One afternoon, Toby recognizes a voice: Gloria, now elderly and living with Alzheimer's disease. CJ, frail and aging, visits regularly. Toby bounds to her and breaks his usual composure. Gloria dies with CJ holding her hand and Toby lying beside them. CJ volunteers as a counselor at the hospice. She tells Fran, a staff member, that Trent died the previous fall and that she has stopped dialysis. She enters the hospice as a patient, choosing to control the end of her life. CJ passes away one spring afternoon with Toby lying on her chest.

Toby continues serving the hospice for years. When his own body fails, Fran, fellow staff member Patsy, and the cook Eddie take him to the veterinarian. As the injection takes effect, Toby sees a luminous golden light. All the people he has ever loved stand together on a golden shore, calling his many names. He swims toward them.
