On impulse, she introduces herself as Taylor, borrowing the name and glamorous backstory of Taylor Fortwood, a recently deceased calendar buyer whose obituary she had just written. She keeps David's business card despite planning to discard it.

Lillian's professional life collapses. Once the Times' celebrated celebrity obituary writer, she was demoted after overstepping boundaries during an investigation. After a brutal review from her editor, Fran, Lillian blacks out during a night of heavy drinking with Sam Knight, her best friend and a fashionable real estate agent. She is fired after her keys are found near Fran's vandalized car with paint residue on a knife attachment. Lillian hides the firing from Mike and makes Sam promise to keep silent.

Lillian begins texting David as Taylor and meets him again. He helps her get a cash-paying job as a marina concierge, running errands for yacht owners. The physical work transforms her: She loses weight, gains a tan, and feels alive. David cooks for her on his boat, and they share their first kiss. When Mike mentions he reads her obituaries each morning at a diner, clipping his favorites, guilt stabs her.

One month before the death, Mike's perspective reveals he has placed a GPS tracker on Lillian's car and followed her to the marina. He discovers and destroys a desk calendar David gave her. Lillian confesses her relationship with David to Sam, who tells her she looks happier than he has ever seen her.

Two weeks before the death, Mike installs listening devices throughout the house and car. Then Lillian dies. Her body is discovered on a Malibu beach. The narrative takes a supernatural turn: Lillian becomes a ghost, unable to interact with the living world. She watches Mike receive the death notification with a curt nod and begin calculating life insurance payouts.

Mike's chapters reveal a staggering secret: For 13 years, he has worked as a money launderer for the Los Colima cartel, using his financial firm as cover and laundering money through real estate deals brokered by Sam. The bourbon bottle contains a 64-digit Bitcoin encryption key, the only means of accessing Colorado, a cartel savings account holding over $400 million. With the bottle missing, Mike faces catastrophic danger.

Detective Gersh walks Mike through Lillian's final phone records: calls to a taxi service, a domestic-abuse hotline where someone using her name expressed fear of her husband, and the Times, where someone placed an order for Lillian's own obituary. When Gersh plays the hotline recording for Lenny, the former detective immediately declares the voice is not Lillian's.

Lillian's ghost visits David's real home and discovers he is married, has no French accent, and is an undercover agent for the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). Lillian was caught up in a larger federal operation. Meanwhile, the cartel kidnaps Jacob at gunpoint. A cartel leader named Luis demands that Mike transfer Colorado immediately. Mike confesses the encryption key was in the bourbon bottle Lillian took before she died. Luis threatens Jacob and summons Sam.

Sam's chapter delivers the novel's central revelation: He murders Lillian. Mike's affair is not with a woman but with Sam, and Sam resents Lillian for standing between them. Over the preceding year, Sam tests swapping her medications and drugging her drinks. On the day she dies, he intercepts her walking home drunk from the cemetery, gives her a drugged pumpkin spice latte, drives her to Malibu, and overdoses her with Xanax. He also hires the private investigator who films the TikTok video, edits it, and posts it himself. After killing Lillian, he makes the fake phone calls from her phone to cast suspicion on Mike.

Sam finds the bourbon bottle with the encryption key while cleaning out the vehicle he used. In the cartel basement, when Luis points a gun at Jacob, Sam realizes revealing the key would expose him as Lillian's killer. He stays silent, choosing $400 million over Jacob's life. Lillian's ghost screams, recognizing from Sam's silence that he killed her.

A joint DEA and police raid storms the house seconds before Luis fires, traced through a neighbor's photographs and Lenny's detective work. Mike turns state's evidence against the cartel and protects Sam by insisting Sam was ignorant of the money's illegal origins. Sam is released. Mike negotiates witness protection for himself and Jacob, and they receive new identities. Lillian's ghost follows Jacob, feeling her connection to the living world dissolving.
