The novel is set in the Northern Lands, a fantasy world inhabited by elves, dwarves, orcs, fauns, and other magical beings alongside humans. Humans are the only people guaranteed to lack magic: While over half can be affected by it, none can wield it. This places humans at the bottom of the social hierarchy.
Arleta Starstone is a young human baker who scrapes by selling pastries at the outdoor market in her village of Adenashire. She must haggle for a booth with Tonix Figlet, a quokkan (a nonhuman being) who owns the market, disdains magicless vendors, and overcharges Arleta for the worst spot. Customers demand discounts because her goods lack magical origins, making her dream of owning a bakery feel distant. Arleta inherited her baking passion from her mother, Nina, and her knowledge of herbs from her father, Declan, who ran an apothecary. Both parents died in a carriage ambush when Arleta was sixteen, and she has since built emotional walls, refusing help from nearly everyone. Her closest bonds are with Ervash and Verdreth, the orc couple next door who have cared for her since childhood. Ervash urges her to enter the Langheim Baking Battle, a prestigious competition hosted by woodland elves now in its hundredth year, but Arleta refuses.
Two weeks later, a woodland elf named Theodmon "Theo" Brylar arrives with a formal invitation: Ervash secretly submitted one of Arleta's tarts as a qualifying entry. Theo helps at the market and proposes a wager that if she sells out by midmorning, she must let him escort her to Langheim. She sells out. After persuasion from Theo and the orcs, Arleta agrees, packing herbs and spices she considers her own form of magic.
The journey proves difficult. A rainstorm forces them to shelter at an inn, and during a near-collision with a stag, Arleta's sack of ingredients falls from the cart unnoticed. She has a panic attack over the loss, and Theo calms her with a breathing exercise, deepening their bond. After oversleeping, they abandon the cart and ride Theo's horse, Nimbus, directly to Langheim, stopping to help a stranded faun family along the way. They arrive as the castle gate closes and squeeze through at the last moment.
Arleta signs the competition contract without reading it fully. She befriends Dolgrila "Doli" Butterbuckle, a cheerful dwarf who has rejected her family's gemstone mining business to pursue baking. Her roommate is Jez, a sharp-tongued fennex (a fox-like being with scent magic) who detects Arleta's human blood but views it only as making her easier to beat. At the welcome ceremony, Arleta learns that head judge Shalina Brylar is Theo's mother and distances herself, upset he withheld this. Theo apologizes and takes her foraging for replacement herbs. At a bay laurel archway, he reveals he has a Fated, a destined soul partner he has seen only in dreams. Arleta feels jealousy. After sharing painful stories of loss, she tells Theo they should not see each other until the competition ends.
In the signature bake round, Arleta makes plain lemon bars while two-time champion Taenya Carralei produces an elaborate cake. All three friends advance. In the scone round, Arleta uses bergamot tea from Theo's garden. She leaves her station to help Doli with a boiling-over jam, and Jez catches a jar Arleta knocks from her counter. The audience loves the camaraderie, but Shalina summons the trio. The other judges, Thiggul Honorton and Gaia Thornage, defend them, arguing the competition needs fresh energy. Teamwork is prohibited going forward, but the three keep their spots.
On a rest day, the friends bond over shared vulnerabilities. At the Macaron Masquerade ball, Arleta overhears Taenya telling her brother Vesstan she never wanted to compete and dreams of life beyond Langheim. Theo finds Arleta in the garden, and the two nearly kiss as magic swirls around them before being interrupted.
The third round hides a trap: Yageberries, berries that resemble blueberries but turn sweet foods sour when combined with sugar, sit in the pantry. Arleta recognizes them from an encounter in the castle garden and changes her recipe, but she cannot warn Doli without breaking the rules. Doli uses the yageberries and is eliminated. Overwhelmed with guilt, Arleta announces to the arena that she is a magicless human.
Shalina offers Arleta gold to leave. When Arleta refuses, Shalina claims the contract requires bloodline disclosure and threatens to bar Doli and Jez from future competitions. A guard escorts Arleta to a carriage containing a letter purportedly from Theo: "I lied to you. Only elves can be fated to one another" (182). The letter is imbued with magic to amplify her self-doubt, and Arleta leaves believing Theo has rejected her.
Theo, who physically sensed her departure, intercepts the carriage and recognizes his mother's handwriting and magic in the letter. He tells Arleta she has been clinging to a story of unworthiness that once protected her but now holds her back. Arleta returns, and Theo confronts Shalina with the forged letter, demanding Arleta's reinstatement and his mother's resignation after the finale. Shalina agrees. Arleta reunites emotionally with Doli and Jez.
Before the finale, Arleta spots Ervash and Verdreth in the crowd and introduces them to her friends as her fathers, bringing Verdreth to tears. In the showstopper cake challenge, Arleta makes a multilayered vanilla cake with blackberry jam, her mother's recipe. She intentionally omits the rosemary infusion that would have been her signature edge. Taenya is named three-time champion, and Arleta feels little disappointment. Jez confronts her about the omission, and Arleta confirms she left the rosemary out on purpose, explaining that Taenya has no one and that winning while surrounded by loved ones would have felt wrong.
At Theo's cottage, his forest lynx companion, Faylin, tells Arleta bluntly that she is letting fear guide her instead of trusting love. In the castle library, Arleta finds a book documenting three known cases of the elven fated bond possibly extending beyond elves, but the ambiguity fails to resolve her doubts.
Back in Adenashire, Doli and Jez move to town. Arleta and Theo settle into a routine, her Baking Battle fame earning better prices at market. Then Taenya reappears, having used her prize money to buy the corner shop Arleta always dreamed of owning and put it in Arleta's name. The sign reads A Little Dash of Magic Bake Shop. Arleta offers Taenya a business partnership, which she tearfully accepts.
Weeks later, Theo tells Arleta he must return to Langheim because he cannot remain near her if she does not share his feelings. He declares his love. Arleta confesses she loves him and has seen him in her dreams, declaring, "We are fated, because I choose it" (248). She feels a magical cord bind their souls, and they share their first kiss as magic fills the bakery.
In the epilogue, Doli narrates a one-month celebration at the bakery. She receives a letter informing her a great-uncle has died and left her something in his will. The five friends toast to unexpected surprises and unexpected friends, their fellowship of bakers firmly established with many adventures ahead.
