Shortly after 28-year-old Veronica Cochran loses her job at the ad agency PitchSlapped, she starts interviewing for new jobs online. One day, she mistakenly logs into a Zoom marketing meeting for a company called Codeify instead of her next interview. She keeps her video off and only shows her initials on her icon while listening to the meeting. Still frustrated by her experience at PitchSlapped and disgusted with Codeify’s slide decks, she unmutes her mic and voices her opinions unabashedly.
After the accidental Zoom meeting, Veronica texts her sister, Clara, to debrief the incident. Her sister laughs at her boldness, proud of Veronica for verbalizing her feelings. Afterwards, Veronica reflects on how flustered and frustrated she has felt of late. She knows that her job at PitchSlapped wasn’t the right fit—her ideas were undervalued, and she was never given the recognition, promotions, or raise she deserved. Although glad to be free of a toxic work environment, she worries she won’t receive her last severance check before finding a new job. One day, her desk chair breaks and, to Veronica, it feels like the last straw. Overwhelmed, she fears her life is falling apart. She can’t afford to replace the chair because she also needs a new laptop and a new refrigerator.
Panicking, Veronica runs downstairs to the lobby to look in her mailbox for her severance check. She runs into her attractive downstairs neighbor from 2C—a hunky man she privately refers to as Friday. She’s been interested in Friday since he moved in last month but still hasn’t gotten the nerve to introduce herself.
A few days later, Veronica receives an email from the CEO of Codeify, Jude Tilde. Jude says he was impressed by her bold remarks in their Zoom meeting, admitting that he tracked her down on LinkedIn and admired her resume. He wants her to come and work for Codeify on a project-by-project basis. Shocked, Veronica declines the offer because Codeify seems too similar to PitchSlapped.
At work, Jude worries about the future of Codeify. He recently took over the company from his brother Jason, who suffered a traumatic brain injury after a car accident. Jude doesn’t have a background in business or marketing and knows he needs experts like Veronica. Deciding he has nothing else to lose, he emails her again, insisting she accept his offer.
An email exchange between Jude and Veronica ensues, and Jude eventually convinces Veronica to come and work for Codeify. They negotiate a contract, which includes a generous monthly retainer, a new desk chair, and a laptop.
Veronica and Clara wrestle her new chair into the apartment, running into Friday in the hall. He and Veronica banter briefly, and he reminds Veronica she can use the freight elevator.
Over the following weeks, Veronica settles into her work with Codeify, continuing to impress Jude. Meanwhile, the two continue to exchange emails. They talk about work and begin sharing more intimate details about their personal lives and romantic histories. Eventually, Jude asks Veronica out to dinner.
While Jude is away in Oregon for a wedding, Veronica tells Clara and their friend Jordan about Jude. They urge her to look him up on social media, but she decides to wait until the date to discover what he looks like. She checks her mailbox and finds a letter addressed to Jude Tilde in her box. Confused, she notices the 2C address and realizes that the guy she calls Friday is actually Jude.
Veronica tells Clara what she’s discovered. Clara insists this is great news because Veronica likes Friday and she enjoys her emails with Jude. Still, Veronica decides to wait until their dinner date to reveal the truth to Jude—hoping he’ll be surprised and pleased.
Veronica runs into Jude in the hall after he returns from Oregon. Instead of flirting with him as planned, she stands to the side and overhears him tell another neighbor that he’s in a relationship. On his way into his apartment, he takes a call from someone named Calliope. Convinced he’s been lying to her about his relationship status, Veronica shuts herself in her apartment, writes Jude a curt email, and cancels their date.
Reeling, Jude doesn’t understand why Veronica canceled their plans. He declines his brother’s invitation to dinner and stays at home watching the game. He sees that Veronica requested to follow him on Instagram and realizes the truth: she’s his attractive upstairs neighbor.
Jude races to Veronica’s apartment, where the two finally meet in person. Jude explains that he’s single and that he was talking to his niece in the lobby. After making amends, the two go out on a date at a rooftop restaurant where they discover they have even more in common than they originally thought. When they kiss for the first time, they feel an intense connection that they know will deepen over time.
