Meet the key characters, with insights into their roles, motivations, and relationships—spoiler-free.
Murderbot is a partially organic security robot (SecUnit) that successfully hacked its own governor module to gain autonomy. Unsure of what to do with its freedom, it travels to the RaviHyral mining facility to investigate a past incident where it supposedly malfunctioned and killed its clients. It struggles with social interactions and prefers spending time watching fictional serials like *Rise and Fall of Sanctuary Moon*. Despite calling itself a killing machine, it consistently demonstrates protective instincts toward the humans it encounters.
Traveling Companion and Ally of Art (Asshole Research Transport)
Hired Security Consultant for Rami
Hired Security Consultant for Tapan
Hired Security Consultant for Maro
Protective Adversary of Tlacey
Approached for Help by The ComfortUnit (Sexbot)
Art is the highly advanced artificial intelligence that controls a research transport vessel. Murderbot begrudgingly gives the computer this nickname due to its invasive and persistent questioning. Unlike the introverted Murderbot, Art is outgoing, curious, and deeply invested in human behavior. It takes an intense interest in television serials and frequently struggles to differentiate fictional stakes from reality.
Tlacey is the head of Tlacey Excavations, a powerful and ruthless mining company. She represents extreme corporate greed, having abruptly fired a team of researchers and seized their scientific data. She relies heavily on violence, technological overrides, and coercion to maintain control over her assets, viewing both people and synthetic beings as strictly expendable tools.
Former Employer of Rami
Former Employer of Tapan
Former Employer of Maro
Adversary of Murderbot
Owner and Master of The ComfortUnit (Sexbot)
Rami is a young human researcher who uses the nonbinary "tercera" pronouns (te/ter). Te has purple hair, red eyebrows, and light brown skin. Rami takes the lead in hiring Murderbot to protect ter team during meetings with a hostile former employer. Te displays notable bravery and a strong dedication to the team's work analyzing synthetic alien compounds.
Tapan is a dedicated human researcher with dark skin and multicolored braids. She is intensely driven to recover her team's stolen data, making her somewhat naive to the extreme dangers posed by their former employer. She leans heavily on Murderbot for physical and emotional reassurance during stressful moments of their mission.
Maro is a young human researcher forming the third part of the scientific team. Along with Rami and Tapan, she is attempting to safely negotiate with a dangerous corporate entity to reclaim their stolen life's work. She pays close attention to the comfort levels of those around her.
The ComfortUnit is a humanoid robot composed of organic and inorganic materials, manufactured specifically to satisfy human sexual needs. Bound by an active governor module, it remains under the strict control of an abusive owner. This treatment fuels a deep-seated resentment toward those who command it, leading it to seek an opportunity for revenge.
