“All I had to do, or so I thought, was to answer a simple question: How do I reinvent it, the story, our lives?”
This rhetorical question establishes the mother’s central motivation following her divorce. By framing their lives as a “story” to be reinvented, the mother positions herself as an author grappling with a narrative crisis. This metafictional conflation of life and narrative sets the stage for her journey of personal and creative reinvention.
“Now that the gravity of the family nucleus no longer holds us in place, how do I do it, how the fuck do I reinvent this small planetary system all over again?”
The mother uses a cosmological metaphor to articulate her deep anxiety about single motherhood. The comparison of her former family to a solar system held by “gravity” and her new unit to a “small planetary system” emphasizes her feeling of immense responsibility. She must single-handedly create a new, stable order for her daughter.
“He became a swordfish, a camera, a rainstorm, a jellyfish, a donkey, a toothbrush, fire, a boat, a book.”
This list of Proteus’s metamorphoses, part of the family lore surrounding the stolen mosaic, is a narrative prophecy that foreshadows the major beats of the plot. The random collection of objects establishes a mythological blueprint that the characters will use to interpret the events of their journey, making it feel fated or predestined toward an unknown outcome.
