Plot Summary

Exactly one year after his older brother left home without warning, thirteen-year-old Pat O'Toole receives a package at school containing a digital voice recorder, memory sticks, and a note from his brother, Coop. The note instructs Pat to exchange messages through two private PO boxes, one in New York City and one in their hometown of McLean, Virginia. Pat begins what he calls a "hybrid journal," weaving recordings and written transcription in an epistolary style.

Pat provides background on his family. Their mother, Ariel, is an astrophysicist and former astronaut; their father, Bertrand, is a molecular biologist and Nobel laureate. Neither parent paid the boys much attention, and both were disappointed that their sons did not meet their intellectual expectations. Coop, born during a lunar eclipse on Christmas Eve, has been nocturnal since birth. He collects flashlights, refuses to use phones or email, and developed a passion for tap dancing. He read Pat his favorite books as a child and introduced him to epistolary storytelling.

Pat recounts the Great Tunnel Disaster. When Pat was nine, Coop secretly dug a mile-long tunnel beneath their neighborhood, recruiting Pat as his assistant. After eight months, Coop struck a gas line, and the explosion collapsed the tunnel. Coop shielded Pat, dug them out, and resuscitated him. Pat was hospitalized in a coma for three days. The FBI, led by Agent Ryan, covered the incident up as a routine gas-line explosion. The disaster left Pat with severe claustrophobia, and Coop grew distant afterward, telling Pat they each had to travel their own paths.

Within months of Coop's departure, the parents separated. Ariel moved to Florida with a new boyfriend; Bertrand began dating a younger ornithologist. Through recordings, Coop reveals he hitchhiked across the country before settling in New York, where he feels drawn toward something underground. His messages describe the city's subterranean world and street life, then stop. Weeks pass with no word.

Bertrand files a missing person's report that goes nowhere and announces he is spending Christmas in Belize. Pat decides to go to New York alone, fabricates an email from his father to his mother, and takes a train to Penn Station on December 23 with ten nights to find Coop.

At the post office, Pat stakes out Coop's PO box and watches a bald man open it and flee when confronted. Pat follows him through the city, suffering a severe panic attack on the subway. He discovers the man leads a double life: By day he is Terry Trueman, a bank employee; by night he Dumpster-dives collecting food for people living underground. Terry, who goes by "Posty," is the postman for the Community, a group of people living beneath the streets. He confirms Coop joined but says Pat must speak with May, the group's leader, to learn more.

On Christmas Eve, Posty leads Pat underground through a tight entrance that triggers his claustrophobia. They arrive at the Community's compound, where a silent, pale girl wearing sunglasses sits among the members. May, the gray-haired leader, believes the girl is from the Deep, a place far below where people have lived for generations without ever seeing the sun. The members react with fear, describing the Deep's inhabitants, the Pod (People of the Deep), as dangerous and their leader, Lod (Lord of the Deep), as ruthless.

May reveals that Coop ventured into the Deep about a month ago, against all warnings, and no one knows if he is alive. The Community refuses to help. That night, the girl enters Pat's room and speaks for the first time. Her name is Kate, and she is a Shadow, one of the Pod's elite operatives trained since age two to navigate in absolute darkness. She has Coop's smashed voice recorder and tells Pat that Coop is a prisoner. She came not to escape but to seek help freeing him.

Kate sends her dog to the surface as a decoy to mislead the Seekers, the Pod's tracking dogs, and hides with Pat as Lod arrives to interrogate the Community. After Lod continues upward, Kate leads Pat through an agonizingly narrow two-hour crawl. To stave off panic, Pat listens to Coop's recordings describing his journey into the Deep: an underground river, gas-lit tunnels, and a labyrinth where he grew feverish from an infected hand. Kate found Coop lost and delirious, hid him from Pod members, and told them she had pushed the intruder into the river. Her lie saves his life. Pat also learns that Kate is Lod's granddaughter, born in the Deep.

Kate reveals the Pod's history. Lod's real name is Lawrence Oliver Dane. In the late 1960s, he cofounded the Weather Underground Organization (WUO), a radical group whose mission was to destroy the US government. In 1974, presumed dead, he led thirteen followers into a top-secret Cold War-era facility designed to shelter hundreds of people for a century. Over decades he became a tyrant. Kate's parents tried to escape with her as an infant; Lod tracked them to the surface and murdered them, then took Kate back. She learned this from her dying grandmother and confirmed it through newspaper articles left by a mysterious figure she calls the Librarian, who secretly educated her through books hidden beneath the New York Public Library.

Kate manipulates Lod via radio, claiming loyalty while disabling Pod communications, then sneaks Pat into the compound through a ventilation shaft. The Pod funds itself through Cloud's Mushrooms, a legitimate mushroom-farming business run from underground. Kate gives Pat her keycard and directions to the infirmary where Coop is handcuffed.

Lod returns unexpectedly with guards and Rottweilers, but Pat reaches Coop first. The brothers reunite on Christmas Day. Pat hides under the bed when Lod checks on the prisoner, and after Lod leaves, they escape through the ventilation system. In the vent, Coop apologizes for shutting Pat out after the tunnel collapse, admitting he believed the journey was his alone. Kate meets them, and they flee to the River Styx, the underground river. Both brothers fall in and nearly drown, but Kate rescues them and paddles a canoe through searchlight beams as Lod's boats patrol the water.

They reach a cavern where Kate sometimes meets the Librarian, but a guard and a Rottweiler trap them. A shotgun blast kills the dog, and the Librarian emerges to incapacitate the guard. He reveals himself as Alex Dane, Lod's younger brother and Kate's great-uncle. Alex was one of the Originals, founding inner-circle members who followed Lod underground. When Lod murdered Kate's parents, Alex tried to intervene and was shot, but he survived and spent years monitoring the Pod through hacked surveillance while educating Kate. He leads them to a hidden subbasement of the New York Public Library and equips them with supplies, phones under false names, and a flash drive of evidence for Agent Ryan. On the snowy street, Posty, disguised as Santa Claus, gives Kate the reward money he posted after finding her parents' bodies years ago.

FBI agents intercept both O'Toole parents. Agent Ryan, who before joining the FBI was Detective Tia Muñoz, the investigator of the unsolved murders of Kate's parents, debriefs them. On December 31, Ryan's task force raids the Deep. In Lod's secret room they find a countdown program set to release sarin gas into Penn Station, Grand Central Terminal, several New Year's Eve celebrations, and the Deep itself. They stop it with four minutes to spare. A second timer for explosives designed to bury the victims is halted with fifty-three seconds remaining. Lod and the Originals escape the day after Christmas with millions liquidated into untraceable accounts.

Ariel and Bertrand acknowledge they underestimated their sons and agree to reunite. In a final recording, Coop warns them to trust no one, saying Kate is the reason he was drawn beneath his whole life. Pat closes simply: He loves them, he is safe, and they are above. Lod, however, remains at large.
