Unaccustomed to the slow pace and racial politics of a small Texas town, she often clashes with local authorities in her pursuit of justice.

Wally is Lark's wealthiest resident. He lives in a large reproduction of Monticello located directly across the highway from Geneva's cafe. He owns the local icehouse bar and positions himself as a vigilante protecting the town's interests. He displays a condescending attitude toward Lark's Black community and carries a bitter historical grudge involving his family and Geneva Sweet.

Isaac is a quiet barber who operates his business in a small section of Geneva's building. He relies on Geneva for his meals and general care. He has an intellectual disability and displays intense nervousness, particularly around loud noises or violence. Before working at the cafe, he was employed by the Jefferson family.

Michael is a 35-year-old Black lawyer and Texas native who moved to Chicago. He travels to Lark to deliver a vintage guitar to Geneva Sweet. His violent death initiates the central mystery of the story.
