The novel opens on New Year's Eve, when twenty-six-year-old Nathan James gathers with his four brothers and their father, Dalton, a self-made billionaire, to mourn the recent death of their mother, Verona. In the silence of a house once filled with life, Dalton tells his sons the one piece of advice he believes will spare them from heartache: never fall in love.

Twelve years later, Nathan is thirty-eight and co-owns the country's largest law firm with his brother Drake. Dalton insists Nathan is the only son capable of producing heirs. His oldest brother, Elijah, is trapped in a childless, unhappy marriage. Mason is gay and uninterested in parenthood. The youngest, Maddox, drifts across Europe. Drake is consumed by work. Dalton has already arranged a match: Melanie Edison, the daughter of the late Luke Edison, a businessman he admired. Nathan, weary of meaningless dating, agrees to meet her.

Escalating sexual tension finally breaks after Melanie's disastrous attempt to cook a seductive dinner. They consummate the marriage, and Nathan asks her to move into his bedroom permanently. They develop a passionate relationship while growing closer to each other's families. Nathan, suspicious of Bryce's behavior, visits Shane Ryan, the head of the Irish mob and one of Nathan's clients, to request that Shane's wife Jessie, a hacker, investigate Luke Edison's murder.

When Nathan leaves for a business meeting in Chicago, a bartender named Ariana Benjamin drugs his drink at Bryce's direction. Nathan wakes beside Ariana with no memory of the night. A drug test confirms the presence of Rohypnol and opioids, and he flies home to tell Melanie. She reveals that Bryce had planned a honey trap and that she knew about it before the wedding but begged him to stop. Enraged, Nathan orders her out of the penthouse. He returns to Chicago, where Ariana confirms Bryce orchestrated the drugging and that nothing sexual occurred. Nathan confronts Bryce and vows to ruin him financially.

When Bryce cuts off Ashley's college funding in retaliation, Melanie sells her engagement ring for one hundred sixty thousand dollars and uses every cent for Ashley's tuition. Nathan has Melanie's financial records pulled, confirming the money went entirely to Ashley. When Elijah delivers mail to Melanie at Tyler's apartment and witnesses Bryce striking her, Elijah intervenes. On New Year's Eve, Nathan sleeps with Melanie at Tyler's apartment and then hands her divorce papers. Weeks later, Melanie discovers she is pregnant. Regretting his reaction, Nathan shows up for her first scan. Her family covered up the pregnancies by spreading rumors she went to rehab. Nathan begins visiting daily, cautiously rebuilding their connection.

One night, Melanie overhears a woman's voice during a phone call with Nathan and assumes he is with someone else. She wakes in pain, goes to the hospital alone, and miscarries. Nathan brings her to the penthouse to recover. During this period, he receives Jessie's findings on Luke Edison's murder: Bryce owed large debts and arranged a robbery of the family home while the family was supposed to be at the beach. When Luke stayed home, the robbery turned deadly, and a corrupt detective killed both robbers to cover Bryce's involvement. Melanie is shattered to learn that Bryce manufactured the guilt she carried for seventeen years and asks Nathan to sever all her ties to the Edison family.

Nathan visits Melanie's mother, Miranda Edison, who confirms Melanie had no part in the drugging scheme and reveals that Melanie had told her family she believed she and Nathan were falling in love. When Tyler returns and Melanie prepares to leave the penthouse, Tyler confronts Nathan with a story about Melanie as a thirteen-year-old choosing the oldest shelter dog because love takes its happiness where it can find it, urging Nathan not to destroy something real out of fear.

Nathan asks Melanie to stay, not for children or obligation, but because he loves her. She tells him she loves him too. The next morning he returns her engagement ring, having bought it back, and proposes again. At a family dinner, Maddox makes a surprise return after four years abroad, bringing Melanie a fertility carving blessed by a shaman. His homecoming is deeply emotional for the entire family.

In a final boardroom meeting, Melanie leads the proceedings against Bryce and Miranda. Invoking a clause that allows removal of trustees who misappropriate funds, she announces that Elijah and Mason James will replace Bryce and Miranda as trustees of the Edison family trust. Ashley is named sole beneficiary, and Bryce receives nothing. Nathan warns both never to contact Melanie again.

Ten months later, on New Year's Eve, Melanie is two days past her due date with their first child. One year after that, at the annual James family party, Melanie reveals she is pregnant again.
