Children of Anguish and Anarchy

The third and final installment of the Legacy of Orïsha series opens in the aftermath of the previous books. In the world of Orïsha, a West African-inspired kingdom, maji are people born with white hair and the ability to channel magic tied to their clan deities. After centuries of oppression under a monarchy that stripped them of their powers, the maji fought a civil war to reclaim their magic. On the night of their near-victory, masked foreign warriors called the Skulls descended on the battlefield, releasing a knockout gas and abducting dozens of maji onto ships.

Zélie Adebola, a young Reaper maji whose powers connect her to the goddess of death, Oya, has been imprisoned aboard a Skull ship for nearly a full moon. The Skulls have shaved her white hair, welded a crown made of majacite, a poisonous magic-suppressing metal, into her temple, and injected liquid majacite into her throat nightly. She has been separated from her brother, Tzain, and the former princess of Orïsha, Amari. When a new prisoner arrives, Zélie discovers it is Inan, the former prince who dissolved the monarchy before their capture. Inan shares intelligence: The Skulls serve a king named Baldyr from the Tribes of Baldeírik, a land to the far east, and are searching for "the girl with the blood of the sun," who Inan believes is Zélie.

The Silver Skull, the ship's captain, drags Zélie to Baldyr. Younger than expected, the king speaks Orïshan through a device powered by bloodmetal, a magical metal the Skulls activate through blood and runes. He opens a chest containing three ancient golden medallions and explains he does not need Zélie to fight; he needs her heart. He drives one medallion into Zélie's breastbone, where it fuses with her skeleton, and her blood glows gold. Meanwhile, Tzain rallies the captive maji to break free using stolen tools. Zélie regains consciousness after Baldyr departs, kills the Silver Skull, and recovers her staff. A full revolt erupts. Amari is freed by Kenyon, the elder of the Burner clan. Tzain discovers he can wield a fallen Skull's crimson axe with supernatural strength, though it fills him with uncontrollable frenzy. Zélie frees her lionaire, Nailah, a large lion-like war mount. As the ship sinks, the medallion ignites wild lightning that splits it in half, and the maji escape in lifeboats.

Pulled underwater, Zélie experiences a vision. The medallion heals her wounds and regrows her hair. An ancient voice commands her to "find her," revealing a girl with russet-brown skin and diamond-like eyes. Zélie washes ashore and discovers that her touch can restore other maji's suppressed magic. The group splits: The majority sail home with Inan to unify Orïsha, while Zélie, Tzain, and Amari follow a stolen compass south to find the girl before Baldyr does.

After twelve days, they reach a hidden island guarded by vineweavers, magic users who command living vines, and warriors called the Lâminas, who ride massive beasts called tigenaires. Taken captive, they are brought to the floating city of New Gaïa, a civilization of concentric vine rings and canals hidden inside a mountain lake. Emperor Jōrah orders Zélie killed, but the girl from Zélie's vision, Mae'e, the future hierophant, or sacred leader, stops the execution. Yéva, the elderly hierophant, performs a ritual and channels a prophecy: Before the Blood Moon, three figures will unite, bodies will be sacrificed on the Old Stone, a ritual altar in the mountains, and a new god will be born.

In Orïsha, Inan arrives to find Lagos still divided between maji, soldiers, and titáns, people who gained powers when magic returned. Connector magic allows Inan to link minds and project shared visions, and he uses this ability to force every faction's representatives to experience a hallucination of a Skull attack, watching their own deaths. The vision shocks them into alliance. Even his mother, Nehanda, the former queen, joins. Under Inan's coordination, the combined forces fortify Lagos with layered defenses.

In New Gaïa, Yéva trains Zélie on the volcanic summit, revealing that the medallion is a living entity feeding on her soul and teaching her to turn its stored energy into a weapon. Tzain trains under Kōa, the Lâminas' leader. In a painful initiation, Kōa extracts a glowing rib from Tzain's body that transforms into a double-headed bone axe fueled by memories of his mother's love.

Inan sails with Nâo, the elder of the Tider clan, and Dakarai, the elder of the Seers, to locate the Skulls' trading port. He travels to New Gaïa and proposes a joint strike to Emperor Jōrah, who sends a tactical team. The mission fails: Baldyr invokes a blood oath embedded in the medallion, seizing control of Zélie's Reaper magic and reanimating slain Skulls against the Lâminas. Zélie summons golden lightning for the first time, igniting blast oil Inan planted on Baldyr's ship, and the group escapes. Back in New Gaïa, Yéva sacrifices the last of her life force to heal the wounded, and dies. Mae'e inherits the role and trains Zélie to summon the lightning at will.

The combined forces launch a two-wave assault on Baldyr's fleet at the Black Bay of Iarlaith. But the attack is a trap: Baldyr's galdrasmiðar, fur-clad magicworkers, have been hidden on every ship, performing a blood ritual to summon the Blood Moon. The fleet ignites with allied forces still aboard, killing many Lâminas and gravely injuring Kōa. Baldyr reveals his true fleet: massive bloodmetal carriers powered by the Blood Moon. The carriers split, half heading for Orïsha and half for New Gaïa.

Captured and brought to the Old Stone, Zélie and Mae'e are subjected to brutal rites. Baldyr drives medallions into Mae'e's chest and his own heart, activating all three. Their combined powers feed into Baldyr as his body transforms toward godhood. Tzain arrives with Amari and Inan, but Zélie realizes no external force can stop the ritual. She drives a concealed whittled bone into her own heart, severing the flow of power. The blast halts Baldyr's transformation, leaving him a grotesque fusion of bloodmetal and flesh. Tzain, Amari, and Inan escape with Zélie's and Mae'e's bodies.

Beneath Mount Gaïa, Mae'e revives but Zélie does not. Mae'e instructs Inan to carry Zélie to the mountaintop and exchange his breath of life for hers. In a final dreamscape, Inan removes the majacite crown from Zélie's temple, restoring her Reaper magic. He tells her to defeat Baldyr and create the Orïsha they dreamed of. He kisses her, and his life transfers to hers.

Zélie awakens with her full powers restored. Mae'e harnesses the volcanic eruption, bringing the stone carvings of Mama Gaïa, New Gaïa's founding goddess whose image is carved into the surrounding mountains, to life as colossal beings that crush the invading Skulls. In Orïsha, Tzain joins the defense of Lagos, where maji, titáns, and soldiers execute Inan's layered defense plan. Zélie sprints across the ocean, summoning the spirits of every maji killed by the Skulls. Thousands of spectral warriors rise from the seas to swarm Baldyr's final carrier. Zélie traps the king in a whirlpool of white light and calls down a thousand bolts of lightning, destroying him.

Zélie returns to Orïsha's battered port. Tzain waits at the dock and sweeps her into his arms. All factions work together to clear rubble and tend wounds. Zélie lifts Baldyr's golden skull into the air, and all of Orïsha cheers.
