Chapter 16 Summary

After hearing Kyle’s story about Ian, Eric recognizes the older man’s actions as predatory and resolves to suppress his romantic feelings for Kyle. His preoccupation has affected his performance, and before the evening’s game, Coach Murdock benches him in favor of Tommy, the backup goalie, after a poor practice and concerns that Eric’s head is not where it needs to be. Noticing that Tommy is the same age as Kyle reinforces Eric’s sense that the age gap is a problem for him.

Scott reminds Eric about a charity drag show the following night, but Eric declines, believing it is best to stay away from Kyle. Meanwhile, Kyle has not heard from Eric in days and regrets telling him about Ian, assuming it caused Eric’s silence. When Kip texts to remind Kyle about the drag show, Kyle agrees to attend. Eric then texts, asking if Kyle is going, revisiting the idea despite earlier declining, and they exchange light, slightly awkward messages before Eric calls to set a boundary: At the club, they should be hands-off and that it would be best for them to remain friends. Kyle agrees, though he is disappointed, masking it with humor, and privately resolves to find someone new at the club to help him move on.

Chapter 17 Summary

Eric attends the charity drag show with Carter, Kyle, Maria, and Matti. Their teammate, Scott, performs in drag before giving an earnest speech about the LGBTQ youth charity the event supports. After the others leave or head to a diner, Eric stays at the club. He watches Kyle dance with Jesse, an attractive blue-haired man, and grows jealous, especially as Kyle seems to be deliberately drawing his attention. Feeling like a voyeur and struggling with his loss of control, Eric leaves.

Kyle chases him outside. Eric wraps his scarf around Kyle and tells him to go back inside, but overcome with desire, he pulls Kyle against a wall and kisses him. When Kyle asks whether Eric became aroused watching him with Jesse, Eric invites him home and calls his car service.

In the back of the SUV, Kyle begins touching himself through his jeans. Eric tells him to wait, promising to give him whatever he wants when they arrive. At Eric’s house, Eric performs oral sex on Kyle, then asks Kyle to teach him how to have penetrative sex, marking a shift from restraint to active exploration of his desires. After they both climax, Eric asks Kyle to stay the night. Kyle agrees despite his reservations, and as they lie in bed, both become aware that their connection may be moving beyond casual sex, and Kyle allows himself to imagine for one night that their connection is genuine.

Chapter 18 Summary

Eric wakes beside Kyle and reflects on his intense infatuation, so different from the comfortable love he felt for his ex-wife, Holly. After showering, he acknowledges the pull he feels toward Kyle but remains uncertain rather than fully giving in to it. When Kyle wakes and flirts with him, Eric restrains his desire and redirects the moment, offering to make breakfast.

In the kitchen, Kyle braces for rejection, but Eric instead confides that he plans to retire at the end of the season—a secret he has told no one else. He expresses anxiety about life after hockey and the difficulty of telling his teammates. Kyle comforts him with a hug and offers to be available anytime Eric needs to talk, which brings them closer on a more personal level.

Eric mentions he will be on the road for a series of upcoming games and trips. Kyle feels disappointed and worries Eric will lose interest during their separation; he wants reassurance but not doesn’t want to ask for it directly. As Eric walks Kyle to the door, they share a tender kiss. Kyle leaves, realizing he is developing strong romantic feelings for Eric, even though he expects the connection may not last.

Chapter 19 Summary

Two weeks later, Eric reflects that the separation from Kyle did not diminish his feelings—he thought about him constantly, even on Christmas. He texts Kyle and invites him to coffee. Kyle, who has been preoccupied with thoughts of Eric and deliberately waited for him to reach out first, agrees to meet.

At the café, when Eric’s comments about younger goalies suggest he may be seeking Kyle out to feel younger, Kyle confronts him. Eric denies it, admitting he only thinks about their age difference when they are apart. He confesses that the recent road trips were difficult, knowing they were his last in certain arenas, and that he found himself missing Kyle. Kyle is pleased and quietly excited, and admits he missed Eric too. Knowing his roommate, Maria, is at work, Kyle suggests they go to his empty apartment. Eric eagerly agrees. Kyle teases him about wanting a booty call, but Eric insists he also wanted to talk. Kyle replies flirtatiously that they can talk afterward.

Chapter 20 Summary

In Kyle’s bedroom, Kyle edges Eric to the brink three times before retrieving Velcro cuffs and a blindfold and asking Eric’s consent. Eric immediately agrees. After some sexual activity, Eric begs to see, and Kyle removes the blindfold. His eyes are teary, and he tells Kyle he is beautiful. Kyle instructs Eric to tell him when to stop just before climax, and Eric successfully gives the command. Kyle then brings Eric to a powerful orgasm. As Kyle climaxes, he murmurs that Eric might be ruining him for anyone else—a comment he quickly softens with humor.

Afterward, they talk about the experience and cuddle in bed. Eric confesses he thought about Kyle every day during their separation, especially on Christmas, knowing Kyle was alone, and apologizes for not calling. Kyle accepts without revealing he had the same fear. They kiss tenderly, and when Kyle mentions they have time before his roommate returns—time for food—Eric playfully pounces on him, and they decide food can wait.

Chapters 16-20 Analysis

The narrative uses Eric’s reaction to Kyle’s past to engage with the theme of Overcoming Past Trauma to Build a Healthy Relationship. Upon learning about Kyle’s teenage relationship with an older boss named Ian, Eric immediately recognizes the predatory nature of the dynamic and attempts to create distance in his interaction with Kyle. He considers the actions of Kyle’s former boss to be deeply troubling, which shapes his response to the situation. This reaction reflects wider concerns around age-gap relationships, where disparities in life experience and emotional maturity can contribute to unequal dynamics. Eric’s anxiety about repeating aspects of this imbalance is heightened when Coach Murdock benches him in favor of Tommy, a backup goaltender exactly Kyle’s age. The professional replacement intensifies Eric’s awareness of the age difference, bringing his uncertainty into sharper focus. He withdraws from Kyle and communicates a preference to keep distance, which reflects his attempt to manage the situation without settling on a clear course of action. His limited communication leaves Kyle to interpret the change on his own, and Kyle connects the distance to what he shared, deciding to attend the drag show and focus on other interactions. This miscommunication shows how their past experiences inform how they respond to each other, and the interaction remains unsettled and open-ended.

As Eric grapples with his shifting personal trajectory, his decision to share information about his career foregrounds The Search for Authenticity Beyond Professional Identity. Following their first night of penetrative sex, Eric confides in Kyle that he plans to retire at the end of the season—a revelation he has not shared with his teammates, coaches, and even his closest friend, Scott. Throughout his nearly two decades in the league, Eric’s position on the ice has shaped how he presents himself and manages different aspects of his life. His stoic, professional demeanor has been one way he has kept parts of his identity separate from his public role within professional sports. The National Hockey League’s historically exclusionary culture forms part of the context in which Eric has made these choices, without being the sole determining factor. By sharing his retirement plans and his uncertainty about life after hockey, Eric introduces aspects of himself that are not typically visible within his professional environment. This moment reflects a shift in what he chooses to disclose, rather than a complete transformation.

The escalating physical relationship between the two men develops through increasingly intimate interactions that affect how Eric experiences closeness and control. After experiencing intense jealousy watching Kyle dance with a blue-haired man at a charity drag show Eric acts impulsively and kisses Kyle outside the club. This moment continues later in Kyle’s apartment, where Kyle introduces a blindfold and Velcro cuffs. Eric’s immediate, enthusiastic consent to these physical restraints reflects his willingness to engage with the experience within agreed boundaries, rather than indicating a complete shift in how he relates to control. Bound and deprived of sight, Eric responds to the sensory experience as peaceful. Kyle guides the pacing while repeatedly affirming Eric’s consent, and Eric remains responsive and engaged in what is happening. This experience highlights how intimacy emerges through interaction, consent, and responsiveness, rather than through the complete relinquishment of control or a fixed shift in identity..

This interaction highlights The Necessity of Vulnerability in Intimate Relationships. Following their encounter with the restraints, the physical aftercare is followed by a conversation in which both men share what they have been thinking and feeling. As they lie in bed, Eric explains that he avoided reaching out because he did not want to appear eager. This disclosure adds context to how he managed distance during that time. Kyle, who had also been waiting for Eric to initiate contact, responds by acknowledging that he missed him as well. Their exchange shows how their interaction includes both physical and emotional engagement. The conversation remains part of an ongoing interaction, without establishing a defined direction for their relationship to maintain narrative tension.
