The third and final installment in the Ninth House series is set at Yale University, where eight secret societies practice real magic powered by nexuses, portals that channel demonic energy. A ninth organization called Lethe monitors them. Alex Stern, a sophomore and Lethe's Dante (junior delegate), can see ghosts and is a Wheelwalker, capable of opening any door between worlds. In the previous books, Alex and her allies traveled to hell through a magical passage called the Gauntlet and rescued Daniel "Darlington" Arlington V, Lethe's Virgil (senior delegate), but they left the door to hell cracked open. Darlington returned part demon, bound to Alex by hellfire, an infernal power they share, and marked with golden bands at his wrists and neck from his vow of service to Golgarot, a demon prince.
Three months later, Alex, Darlington, and Abel Turner, a New Haven police detective and Lethe's Centurion (law enforcement liaison), spend their nights hunting demons that trickle through the open door. Alex draws each demon into her body and traps it in the Voynich Coffin, a salt puzzle box, but each extraction brings a vision of Golgarot's approaching armies. The coffin holds twenty-two demons and its structure is warping. Pamela Dawes, Lethe's Oculus (archivist and researcher), manages operations from Il Bastone, Lethe's headquarters, while caring for Tripp, a former Yale student whose soul was partially preserved by his salt guardian, an albatross, when a demon consumed him.
The group pressures Alex to question her mother Mira about her unknown father, believing her Wheelwalker bloodline explains why Golgarot used her blood to prop open the door. Alex refuses. Darlington, meanwhile, theorizes that all magic is demonic in origin and realizes his demonic nature makes him a portable nexus.
The Lethe board summons the delegates to New York. Board president Alban Reed, a hedge fund manager, announces a toothless task force on the vampire Linus Reiter, created by the 1933 descent to hell, while Dawes infiltrates the Yale Club library and retrieves hidden records, including a photograph of the four original pilgrims with coded pseudonyms. Reed corners Alex privately and reveals he knows she is a Wheelwalker, demanding she create a new nexus for him while threatening her scholarship and her mother's housing.
Turner traces one pseudonym to Rhode Island, where the group finds an old man who uses a wheelchair, tended by a young caretaker named Theo. Alex recognizes that the supposed caretaker is actually a demon draining the real victim, Theo, of his life force. She traps the demon with a salt pattern, and Darlington interrogates it. Theo, terrified of going to hell, begs Alex to consume what remains of his soul. She reluctantly agrees, absorbing his life and memories. The demon's clues lead Dawes to decode the pilgrims' nicknames and discover a hidden compartment in Il Bastone containing descriptions of four artifacts: Heart of Gold, Hand of God, Feet of Clay, and Head of the Dragon, and a blueprint of Harkness Tower.
Alex's friendship with her roommate Mercy has deteriorated since Mercy helped Alex kill a drug dealer in the previous book. When Alex investigates Professor Charlie Girard for predatory behavior toward students, Girard reveals he is a former member of Scroll and Key, one of Yale's secret societies, and is connected to Reed. He threatens to expose Alex's abilities to the wider magical world.
The group begins collecting the artifacts, initially believing they form a golem to fight Golgarot. During a ritual at Wolf's Head, another of Yale's secret societies, Alex and Darlington steal the Heart of Gold from a sarcophagus and, hidden behind a waterfall, give in to their mutual attraction before Alex uses hellfire to pull Darlington back from his demon self. Soon after, Reiter kidnaps Mercy to lure Alex to Savin Rock, a desolate beach. Turner and Darlington rescue Alex, and Reiter offers the Feet of Clay, claiming he does not want Golgarot to enter the mortal realm. He escapes, leaving Mercy drugged but alive.
When the group attempts to lift a magical prohibition on Mira's memories, the effort triggers the arrival of Luis Huilca, Alex's father. He belongs to an order of priest-guardians forbidden from mixing bloodlines with witches. He calls Alex a
wakcha, an abomination, and stabs her. Dawes deflects the blow, and Darlington subdues Huilca. While Alex heals, her blood, Darlington's demonic presence, and the artifacts trigger an involuntary journey through time: The group inhabits the consciousness of the 1933 pilgrims, witnessing their true plan to capture a demon as a power source for the societies.
Darlington discovers his great-grandfather, Daniel Arlington II, was the fourth pilgrim and that Black Elm, the Arlington family estate, is itself the demon his ancestor brought back, feeding on every generation of Arlingtons. Alex realizes the artifacts are not golem components but armor for a soldier designated to fight Golgarot. She contacts the ghost of Hector, one of the original pilgrims, and learns the rules: The soldier must climb Harkness Tower at midnight, survive four trials, and defeat Golgarot at the top. The soldier may call upon a second, and Golgarot may do the same. Hector killed himself because his second, Daniel Arlington II, never came. Turner uncovers a pattern of deaths tied to the societies' rituals and persuades Professor Walsh-Whiteley, Lethe's faculty liaison, to ban all Thursday-night rituals.
On the half-moon Thursday, Alex dons the armor and enters the tower. She survives four trials: identifying an obscure tarot card while an illusion of her dead best friend Hellie is tortured, solving an 1890s arson case while a demon takes the form of her ex Len, naming the most precious thing in Beinecke Library (Darlington himself), and confronting the worst moment of her childhood. Ghosts of loved ones pull her free of despair.
Golgarot feigns defeat, then calls Darlington as his second, invoking a demonic vow that predates Darlington's bond to Alex. The golden bands turn black and Darlington attacks Alex, tearing open her chest. Outside, Reiter storms the tower with his familiars. Tripp's albatross knocks Reiter from the tower, but the vampire regenerates and kills Tripp. Dawes, channeling Alex's hellfire, destroys Reiter's heart with her bare hands, killing him. Mercy arrives with armed allies using a weapon-animation spell Dawes created.
Dying on the arena floor, Alex draws strength from the collective resentment of every living soul in New Haven. She reforges Golgarot's jeweled yoke, a collar he forged to bind her as his eternal slave, into a crown and places it on her own head, making herself sovereign over the demonic realm and breaking Golgarot's hold on Darlington. Freed, Darlington charges the demon prince. Alex fashions the crown into a golden bat and strikes Golgarot through the gate. Darlington hurls the Voynich Coffin after him, sending all trapped demons back to hell, and Alex closes all seven nexuses, sealing the doors permanently.
In the aftermath, Tripp is buried at Black Elm. Turner tips police to Reiter's estate, where cadaver dogs uncover bodies. Alex kills Reed by consuming his soul, creating a new nexus at Black Elm, and Dawes erases Girard's memory. The group restructures Lethe: All rituals now require approval, with Dawes and Turner holding final authority and new delegates drawn from both Yale and New Haven. Alex decides to leave Yale, and Darlington asks her to join him investigating a haunted abbey in Italy. She says maybe, stepping into a future no longer defined by hiding or solitude.
