Don't You Forget About Me

In 2005, at Tapton School in Sheffield, Georgina Horspool is reassigned to sit with Lucas McCarthy, a quiet Irish transfer student, for a Wuthering Heights project. What begins as an awkward pairing becomes an intense, secret romance: They meet in the Botanical Gardens under the guise of revision, growing increasingly close. They plan to stay together at a hotel after the leavers' party, which would be Georgina's first sexual experience. At the party, Richard Hardy, the most popular boy in school, tells Georgina she looks like "a high-class prostitute with a heart of gold" (12) and leads her away by the hand. Georgina glances at Lucas and sees apprehension in his eyes, silently asking how badly she is going to hurt him.

Twelve years later, Georgina is 30 and directionless, working as a waitress at That's Amore!, a terrible Italian restaurant in Sheffield. After a restaurant critic complains about reheated food, the chef fires her to deflect blame. That same evening, she discovers her boyfriend Robin McNee, a semi-famous comedian, having sex with his PA. Robin claims they were never exclusive, and Georgina breaks up with him. Her friends rally around her: Clem, a sharp-tongued vintage boutique owner; Rav, a sardonic counselor; and Jo, her best friend since school. They all consider Robin a narcissist and are relieved he is gone.

Georgina's brother-in-law Mark arranges a one-night gig for a wake at The Wicker, a recently renovated pub run by an affable Irishman named Devlin. She thrives during the chaotic evening, and Devlin offers her a full-time job. As the night winds down, Devlin introduces her to his brother: Lucas. Georgina is stunned, but Lucas shows no recognition, shaking her hand with flat politeness. While waiting for her taxi, she overhears him through an open window arguing against hiring her. She is hurt, unaware that Lucas recognizes her immediately and is deliberately feigning ignorance.

Georgina reflects on what followed the leavers' party: She and Lucas never spoke again. Her father, John Horspool, died of a sudden cardiac event during her first term at university. Before his death, she discovered he was having an affair; they fought bitterly, and the guilt of their final argument compounded her grief. She had a panic attack during her first-year exams and never returned to university. A counselor named Fay suggested Georgina truly grieved not Lucas but the version of herself she left behind at eighteen. Devlin calls and officially offers the job, having overruled Lucas's objections.

At The Wicker, Lucas remains professionally detached. Robin refuses to accept the breakup, showing up at Georgina's house and begging for a second chance; she firmly rejects him. She enters Share Your Shame, a writing competition hosted in the pub's function room, with a newspaper column as the prize.

During a Halloween shift, a stripper hired for a bachelorette celebration grinds against Georgina despite her protests. Gripped by a panic attack, she elbows him in the face. Lucas ejects the man and comforts her. Emboldened, she asks if they went to school together. He vaguely acknowledges it but asks whether they were romantically involved, performing ignorance. Devastated, Georgina lies and says they barely spoke. Devlin later reveals that Lucas's wife, Niamh, died of brain cancer the previous year, diagnosed with only eight weeks to live.

Georgina performs her first Share Your Shame piece to great success, but Robin crashes the event, climbs on a chair, and publicly declares his love. Lucas ejects him. Meanwhile, Georgina's controlling stepfather Geoffrey ambushes her at a café, calling her life a disaster and disparaging her late father as faithless. Geoffrey reveals that he and Georgina's mother have long known about John Horspool's affair.

Lucas invites Georgina to his flat and reveals that Niamh was having an affair before her diagnosis. They had agreed to separate, but she wanted it kept secret, so Lucas endured a public charade of devotion through her illness and death. Georgina tells Lucas about her father: she overheard him on the phone with another woman, they fought, and the last words she ever said to him were to piss off. He died of a heart attack weeks later. Lucas holds her as she sobs. Their shared grief over complicated losses creates a new intimacy.

At a contentious Sunday lunch, Geoffrey publicly disparages Georgina's father. In the aftermath, Georgina, her sister Esther, and their mother openly discuss John Horspool's affair for the first time, each revealing she had known independently but kept silent to protect the others.

Robin continues harassing Georgina, crashing the second Share Your Shame event. She threatens him with a restraining order. She then discovers his new comedy show uses excerpts from her private teenage diary, which he secretly photographed while alone in her bedroom. She confronts him backstage; Robin capitulates and cancels the show.

After a woman throws an unknown liquid in Georgina's face at the pub, Lucas panics, believing it could be acid, and strips off her shirt to flush her skin under water. When they realize it was harmless, he hugs her tightly, murmuring, "Of all the faces to destroy" (335). Later, Georgina kisses him and he passionately reciprocates, but then stops, admitting the real reason he cannot pursue this: "I associate you with one of the worst nights of my life" (350). He has known who she is all along. Georgina, gutted, gives her notice.

Walking home after confronting Robin, Georgina spots Richard Hardy with his wife and young daughter, seeing him as an ordinary, diminished man. For the final Share Your Shame, she performs the truth she has never told anyone: At the leavers' party, Richard locked her in a bathroom and sexually assaulted her, then emerged to mime a sex act to the cheering crowd, branding her as a willing participant. She was too afraid to contradict him. She reveals that when she looked across the room at Lucas, the boy she loved, he was kissing someone else. She concludes by reframing the story: The shame was never hers. The room gives her a standing ovation. Lucas, watching from the back, bolts for the door.

That night, Lucas arrives at Georgina's house. He confesses he recognized her immediately at the wake and chose to feign ignorance. He reveals he had an intense crush on her before they were ever paired together, describing her as a vivid, joyful presence amid his misery. He apologizes for failing to protect her from Richard, admitting he suspected Richard's intentions and did nothing out of insecurity. When he kissed another girl at the party, it was a cruel act of revenge for what he mistakenly believed Georgina had done willingly. They part with a handshake; Lucas will be returning to Dublin as part of the pub's existing business plan.

Six months later, Georgina has enrolled at Sheffield University to study English Literature, funded by money her mother offered from her father's savings as a gesture of faith. Her mother acknowledges that discussing the affair openly has released long-held resentment over John Horspool's close bond with Georgina. Georgina thrives academically and manages a cocktail bar. On her 31st birthday, her friends reveal their surprise: They have contacted Lucas and brought him from Dublin. He delivers a speech declaring he is in love with her, asking for the chance to build a life together. Georgina accepts. They step outside and kiss, holding hands as they return to their friends, beginning the relationship they were always meant to have.
