Empire of Flame and Thorns, originally published in 2024, is the first installment in The Flame and Thorns romantasy series by Marion Blackwood. The novel is set in the fae Seelie Court, which has been trapped behind a magical thorn forest and brutally subjugated by dragon shifters for millennia. The shifters justify this oppression as penance for the fae’s ancestral crime of enslaving dragons. Plot Summary

For millennia, the fae of the Seelie Court have been trapped within a magical thorn forest and subjugated by dragon shifters, a punishment for their ancestors who once used a metal called dragon steel to enslave the shifters. Selena Hale serves in a secret fae resistance movement. Despite her potent emotion magic, which grants her the ability to manipulate feelings already present in others, she is relegated to lookout duty. One day, Selena’s rookie partner panics during a patrol and draws the attention of the guards. To create a diversion, Selena flirts with the patrol’s captain. The situation escalates with the arrival of Draven Ryat, the ruthless Commander of the Dread Legion, known as the Shadow of Death. In a desperate act, Selena throws her drink in Draven’s face and flees, allowing the resistance leaders to escape. Frustrated by her minor role in the resistance and her people’s distrust of her magic, Selena decides to prove her worth by entering the Atonement Trials. This deadly tournament, held every 150 years by the ruling Iceheart Dynasty, promises freedom and a new life to its three fae winners.

The trials begin with an informal registration test. All contestants must enter the Golden Palace grounds through its iron gate before sundown. A fae bully with fire magic, Alistair Geller, blocks the entrance with his gang. Unable to fight her way through, Selena is forced to climb the massive iron wall encircling the palace. The iron drains her magic and strength, and she collapses just inside the grounds, where Draven discovers her. He threatens to throw her back over the wall, but the trial administrator, Imar, arrives and finalizes her entry. The last hurdle before the first official trial is a power demonstration before the monarchs, Empress Jessina and Emperor Bane Iceheart. Contestants must use their magic to move Imar. Draven, seeking to humiliate Selena, steps in to be her target. He expertly shields his emotions, leaving Selena’s magic useless. She tears off her shirt, creating a spark of shock in him. She then manipulates his emotions, escalating the shock into overwhelming panic and embarrassing him in front of the entire court. Selena passes, but that evening at a celebratory ball, Draven forces her to dance with him, deliberately turning the other contestants against her by creating the illusion of favoritism. Later, Alistair’s ally Maximus uses poison magic to sicken several strong competitors, including Selena and a formidable ice-magic user named Isera Shaw.

The first trial is a battle royale within a shrinking circle of fire, where the last 40 contestants standing will proceed. Weakened by poison, Selena is brutally attacked by Tommen, a member of Alistair’s group with enhanced strength. She barely survives by using her magic to make him flee in terror from an imaginary dragon. Realizing she cannot win through direct combat, Selena finds Alistair and secretly fans the flames of his immense pre-existing rage. She turns him into an uncontrollable force, and he unwittingly eliminates numerous contestants for her. Selena survives the trial. Afterward, Alistair, aware of her manipulation, threatens her. The third trial is a race through a hedge maze to retrieve one of three glass eggs. Draven sabotages Selena by giving her a pre-shattered egg. She saves Jeb, another of Alistair’s friends, from falling off a bridge, and in the confusion of the rescue, swaps her broken egg for his intact one. She successfully passes the trial, while a stunned Jeb is eliminated.

Draven, furious at her success, captures Selena and locks her in his private chambers for three days, intending for her to miss the final trial. A tense, sexually charged dynamic develops between them, culminating in Selena tricking Draven, handcuffing him to his desk, and escaping just in time. The final trial requires the 10 remaining contestants to find one of three gold rings on a stone altar deep within the thorn forest. Selena follows Fenriel, a contestant with a hawk companion named Talon, knowing the bird can locate the altar from the air. A fight breaks out at the altar between the contestants. Selena saves Talon from Alistair’s fire, sustaining burns herself. Out of gratitude, Fenriel gives her his ring, sacrificing his own chance to win. Now in possession of a ring but lost in the forest, Selena is attacked by a monstrous wolfbear. Draven appears in dragon form and saves her life, revealing he had been watching her. He takes the ring, planning to abandon her and ensure she loses. However, the ground, which has been weakened by his storm magic, collapses, and they plummet into a magical underground forest. Forced to cooperate, they find a river that will lead them out. During their journey, they have sex. Selena then tricks Draven into taking off his armor, steals back the ring, and flees. Just before the finish line, she is ambushed by a competitor named Kevlin. In a brutal fight, Kevlin shatters her ankle and hand, but she severs his hamstrings. 

The injured Selena crawls toward the waiting monarchs. Draven confronts her, but the empress’s presence prevents him from interfering further. Selena, along with Isera and Alistair, are declared the three victors. For the winners’ ceremony in the Ice Palace, Draven, Jessina, and Bane step forward to bestow “symbolic” iron collars. As he fastens the collar around her neck, Draven reveals to Selena that he was trying to save her all along. He then inhales, and the iron collar allows him to drain Selena’s magic from her body. The Icehearts do the same to Isera and Alistair, leaving them all powerless and weak. Empress Jessina reveals that the Atonement Trials are a lie. The victors do not win freedom; they become “life slaves,” their magical energy continuously drained by the Icehearts to maintain their immortality. All previous winners are dead, their lives consumed over the 150-year cycle. Bane cruelly informs Isera that her mother was his previous life slave. Jessina claims Alistair, leaving Selena as Draven’s property. Kneeling before him, Selena is consumed by hatred and silently vows to kill her new enslaver.
