Plot Summary

This Mitch Rapp thriller follows CIA operative Mitch Rapp as he rescues a missing scientist in the Ugandan jungle, dismantles a terrorist cult, and hunts a mole inside American intelligence, all while confronting betrayal from within his closest circle.

In southwestern Uganda, Dr. David Chism, a brilliant virologist funded by billionaire Nicholas Ward, runs a research facility developing a universal coronavirus vaccine. When Gideon Auma, a messianic cult leader commanding a guerrilla army near the Congolese border, attacks the facility, hospital director Mukisa Odongo hides Chism and his two research assistants, Jing Liu and Matteo Ricci, in an underground safe room. Odongo is killed confronting Auma, who orders the building burned to flush Chism out. The three scientists escape through the flames into the jungle, though Ricci suffers severe burns.

CIA Director Irene Kennedy meets with President Anthony Cook and Ward at the White House. Ward reports that no bodies have been found and Auma's men are still searching, suggesting Chism may be alive. Cook dismisses the possibility but asks to meet Rapp. That evening, Cook discusses the situation with his wife, Catherine Cook, a former hedge fund manager who serves as his strategic equal. Catherine reveals she has already profited millions by selling stock in Ward's companies and investing in competitors. The Cooks agree to send an inadequate rescue force as political theater, enough effort to impress Ward without any real chance of success.

Rapp is living in South Africa with his partner, Claudia Gould, and her daughter, Anna, settling into domestic life. After a guarded meeting with the Cooks at the White House, he flies back to Africa. Kennedy arranges for Ward to visit Rapp and make his case: Chism's research could produce a vaccine effective against all coronaviruses. Rapp is skeptical that Chism survived more than six days in the jungle but agrees to help, largely out of loyalty to Kennedy.

In Uganda, Rapp and Scott Coleman, a former SEAL who runs the private contracting firm SEAL Demolition and Salvage and is one of Rapp's closest colleagues, establish a mountaintop base camp with 35 contracted operators, including Joe Maslick and Bruno McGraw. They learn that nine American soldiers, led by Lieutenant Jeremiah Grant, were sent into the jungle with no support, their orders coming from somewhere high in the government. Cook angrily orders Kennedy to pull Rapp out, but Coleman, working under a private contract with Ward, refuses. Rapp devises a plan: Bury supply caches across Chism's estimated range, each containing food, medical supplies, and a satellite phone, then drop maps encoded with personal details only Chism could recognize. Chism reaches a cache, calls Rapp, and insists all three scientists be rescued simultaneously. Rapp rappels onto the mountainside and loads the scientists into a rescue litter under fire from Auma's men. The overloaded helicopter pulls away, leaving Rapp behind. He escapes over the mountain before Coleman extracts him. Separately, Auma's forces attack Grant's soldiers. Rapp's helicopters destroy the ambush force, and Rapp and Coleman guide the soldiers to safety.

Coleman fortifies Ward's mountaintop compound in Uganda with berms, sensors, mines, and razor wire. At CIA headquarters, Marcus Dumond, a young hacker working for Kennedy, discovers that someone with high-level internal access breached the Agency's mainframe seeking information on Ward. Rather than lock the intruder out, Kennedy introduces disinformation into Ward's file, modifying it to show the compound's eastern slope as its weakest point and including a fake vulnerability: a buried wire that, if cut, would supposedly disable all electronic defenses.

The trap works. A Saudi intelligence contractor named Muhammad Singh delivers Kennedy's modified plans to Auma, who launches a coordinated assault. His followers attack the eastern slope after inhaling ajali, a powerful locally produced narcotic. Coleman detonates the minefield, annihilating the main force. Ward is evacuated to a hangar 60 miles away, where Rapp waits. Auma leads a second force to ambush Ward at the hangar, but Rapp captures him alive using Taser grenades and tranquilizer darts. Coleman stages the compound to look overrun before spy satellites pass overhead.

Mike Nash, Kennedy's deputy and Rapp's longtime friend and neighbor, presents satellite photos of the staged destruction to Cook, reporting Ward and Chism missing and Rapp's team likely dead. The Cooks celebrate privately. Rapp relocates everyone to a rented eco-lodge and interrogates Auma, who reveals that a Saudi intermediary provided the intelligence. Coleman films a fake ransom video in which Auma demands 10 billion dollars and appears to execute Chism.

Rapp flies Auma back to his camp, keeping him compliant with an explosive attached to his body. Auma orders his followers to celebrate with ajali that Ward's pharmaceutical company has secretly laced with ricin. The poison kills Auma's fighters. Rapp retrieves the burner phone, photographs, and attack plans from Auma's cave. When Auma tries to flee using a captive girl as a shield, the explosive detonates, and the enslaved girls who survived the camp kill him.

Rapp enters Saudi Arabia under a false identity to trace the intelligence chain. He tracks Singh to a construction site where agents of the Saudi General Intelligence Directorate (GID) execute Singh and bury his body in concrete. Rapp retrieves Singh's phones from the wet slab and recognizes one of the agents: Bashir Isa, a mid-level operative Rapp once worked with. When the GID moves to eliminate Isa, Rapp kills two agents and extracts him. Isa confirms the intelligence came from the GID director, likely from the Saudi prince, but does not know the CIA mole's identity. Ward's renewable energy and pharmaceutical research threatens both Saudi oil wealth and the Kingdom's planned pivot into health-care investments, giving the Saudis motive to neutralize Ward. Claudia arranges an escape from the Kingdom, but Isa stays behind, knowing his family is already compromised.

Saudi facial recognition identifies Rapp from airport footage. Cook summons Nash and confesses that he gave Ward's CIA file to the Saudis, who passed it to Auma. The Saudi prince had approached Cook through back channels, proposing to use Auma against Chism, and Cook agreed not to interfere. Catherine reveals their investments have gained over 23 million dollars since Chism's disappearance. Cook offers Nash the CIA directorship in exchange for cooperation. Nash, tormented by guilt, agrees, rationalizing that democracy is failing and the Cooks represent necessary leadership.

Ward proposes using his global telecom holdings to trace the burner phones by cross-referencing cell tower data with personal phone records. Preliminary results show that one of the Saudi burners connected to the same tower serving Rapp's Virginia neighborhood, where Nash also lives. Rapp receives this information during a drive with Nash, who has given him a tablet containing a deep fake video of Kennedy directing Rapp to a remote clearing where hired mercenaries wait.

At the clearing, Nash draws his weapon and reveals his alliance with the Cooks, demanding Ward and Chism's location. But when the mercenaries remove their face coverings, they are Coleman, Maslick, and McGraw, who killed the real mercenaries in the forest. Nash, outmaneuvered, appeals for Rapp to protect his family. He then puts his pistol under his chin and pulls the trigger before Rapp can stop him.

In the epilogue, Rapp returns secretly to the United States. He and Kennedy visit Nash's wife, Maggie, telling a cover story: Nash died heroically in Uganda saving Rapp and his team from an ambush. The lie preserves Nash's reputation and protects his family. Rapp and Kennedy retreat to his house, both carrying the full weight of what has happened.
