Exit Party is a science fiction novel by Canadian American author Emily St. John Mandel. Mandel is known for acclaimed works of literary and speculative fiction, including The Glass Hotel (2020), Sea of Tranquility (2022), and Station Eleven (2014), which won the Arthur C. Clarke Award and was a finalist for the National Book Award and the PEN/Faulkner Award. Exit Party presents a multiverse narrative split between two parallel realities. The novel follows Ari Soriano, a woman navigating a fractured, post-collapse America and her doppelgänger, Ibari Waker, a high-ranking detective serving a technologically advanced, authoritarian surveillance state in a parallel world.
Juxtaposing a world of chaotic freedom against one of oppressive order, Mandel examines themes such as Surveillance as the Price for Harmony, The Hope of Multiple Possible Futures, and The Power of Art as a Connector, linking characters across time, memory, and even the boundaries of their universes.

In the spring of 2031, following the collapse of the United States into warring republics and militias, a woman named Ari is released from an 18-year prison sentence into a socially and politically unstable Los Angeles. One night Ari attends a party with her roommate, Gloria, thrown by a charismatic man named Kareem. Ari, who’s had premonitions all her life, feels drawn to the event. The party is strange: A disoriented woman named Saraya calls Ari by her legal name, Ibari, which she never uses. Kareem’s roommate, James, reveals to Ari that there are “extra people” at the party—doppelgängers of Saraya and Gloria. This other Gloria, who calls herself Nico and lacks Gloria’s distinctive forehead scar, is one of the duplicates. At the end of the night, Kareem vanishes from his own kitchen without a trace. As they leave, Gloria, who is secretly pregnant with Kareem’s child, takes a small oil painting titled Swan Dive from Kareem’s wall.
Years pass, and Ari drifts across the fractured continent, eventually landing in the Ohio Republic. Working as a surveillance operative for a militia leader named Eduardo, she is assigned to follow a woman who turns out to be Nico, Gloria’s double. Nico also calls her Ibari, deepening the mystery. Ari contacts James, who theorizes that Kareem’s party was a “door” between realities that allowed Nico and the other Saraya to enter this world while pulling Kareem out of it.
Ari’s life takes another turn when political instability forces her to flee Ohio with Felix, an arms dealer. They become partners, but their gunrunning operation in Texas goes wrong when they are targeted by a powerful militia called the Company, which Felix once cheated. After their friends are murdered, a premonition allows Ari to escape with Felix to Paris. Their story is framed by an older, wealthier Ari, now an art collector in Paris, who recounts these events to an art history student named Sebastian, whom she suspects is a thief. She tells Sebastian that the partnership with Felix ended tragically when he was murdered in Greece. Ari then marries Bill Soriano, a wealthy man who transports people to new identities. She eventually reunites with Gloria, now living in Vincennes with her son, Sebastian, and buys the Swan Dive painting from her for far less than its value. Years later, after Ari’s husband Bill is killed in an anti-dome protest bombing that shatters her leg. Sebastian successfully steals Swan Dive, and Ari chases after him to retrieve it. In pursuit, she’s knocked down by a man who wants to steal her purse. Sebastian helps her into a cab and takes her to Nico’s apartment where he has stashed the painting.
The narrative shifts to a parallel reality: A technologically advanced, authoritarian surveillance state, simply called the State, policed by an agency known as Service. Here, Nico’s daughter, Marlowe Li, is a 34-year-old academic trapped in an emotionally abusive marriage. While giving a virtual lecture, she receives a text from her brother, Samir, that their father, Kareem, is dying. The lecture is being monitored by Detective Ibari Waker, Ari’s doppelgänger, who is now a high-ranking, 79-year-old Service agent and Kareem’s lifelong friend. At Kareem’s deathbed, he makes cryptic statements about seeing his wife, Nico, “afterward” and about Ibari making his life in this world possible. Both Marlowe and Samir watch as another, rougher version of their father—a double—briefly appears in the room before fleeing. Samir confronts the man, who identifies himself as Kareem Fayed and a member of the Resistance against the State. Shortly after, their father dies.
Ibari has lived a double life as a Service agent with a cover as an urban planning professor. A pair of her glasses, broken and repaired with silver tape, allows her to foil The State’s facial recognition technology, a discovery that plants seeds of dissent in her. Years prior, her close friend, Nico, confessed to working on a subversive teleportation experiment designed for the purpose of helping dissidents escape the State. Nico had told Ibari she was about to participate in a dangerous experiment and made her promise to protect her children, Marlowe and Samir, if anything went wrong. The experiment did go wrong: Nico and her colleague, Saraya, vanished, while Nico’s husband, Kareem, was duplicated. Ibari’s boss notifies her that Nico’s husband completed the experiment unharmed, but he pulled another genetically identical version of himself from a parallel world—the collapsed-US reality. The Kareem who disappeared from his own party in Los Angeles appeared in a secret lab in the State next to a quantum physicist version of himself. He instructs Ibari to interrogate both Kareems. During her conversations with the two men, Ibari learns about the party, the other world, and her own double, Ari.
Finding Nico’s husband to be a neglectful father, Ibari resolves to honor her promise to Nico to make sure her children are loved and protected. She orchestrates an elaborate scheme. She uses a fabricated accusation to frame a colleague, which provides her cover to visit the desert work camp where the other Kareem is being held. She breaks him out using her special glasses and a flaw in the camp’s monitoring system. During their escape, she makes a holographic recording of his testimony about the party and his arrival in this world. He takes the place of Nico’s husband and raises Nico’s children with love and care, developing a life-long friendship with Ibari. Nico’s husband goes into exile to lead the Resistance against the State. Thirty years later, after Kareem dies, Ibari executes her final plan. She retires from Service, but not before secretly arranging a data leak of all her classified files to the public Internet and providing a copy to the Resistance, led by Nico’s husband. She gives him her broken glasses and instructs him to show the recording of Kareem’s interview to Marlowe. Having set in motion the potential collapse of the State, Ibari allows herself to be arrested on a beach, at peace with her decision.
The story returns to its original universe for its conclusion. After stealing Swan Dive, Sebastian leads Ari to the Vincennes forest, where she is mugged and suffers a severe head injury. To avoid a hospital, Sebastian takes the dying Ari to Nico’s apartment. There, as she lies in his old bedroom, Ari has a final vision of her deceased wife, Eddie Kalisa, leading her to the ocean depicted in the Swan Dive painting. She dives into the blue expanse and dies. Panicked, Sebastian contacts a criminal acquaintance who makes Ari’s body disappear, indebting him to the criminal underworld. He then presents the stolen painting to Nico as a birthday gift, claiming he bought it back for her. Nico is moved to tears by the gesture. The narrative jumps back to 1960, where the artist Lucas Alkaitis is in his New York studio, beginning to paint the diver’s feet disappearing into the waves in Swan Dive.
