Juicy is a 20-year-old queer Black man pursuing a degree in human resources through a distance-learning university. Unlike the men in his family who pride themselves on traditional masculinity and the family barbecue business, Juicy is introspective, sensitive, and emotionally deep. He is highly aware of his status as an outsider in his Southern community and experiences intense pressure to conform to his family's expectations of manhood.

Tedra is Juicy's lively, upbeat mother who has just married her late husband's brother. She thrives on social interaction, male attention, and creating a celebratory atmosphere. Though she deeply loves Juicy and accepts his sexuality without judgment, she struggles to stand up for him against her new husband's domineering personality and relies heavily on male approval.

Rev is Pap's brother and Tedra's new husband, stepping quickly into his late brother's shoes to take over the family barbecue business. A minister who boasts loudly about his butchering and cooking skills, Rev is deeply invested in traditional masculinity. He openly criticizes Juicy's sensitivity and queer identity, expecting total submission from those around him.

Pap is Juicy's recently deceased father, a former butcher who was killed while serving time in prison. Even in death, he maintains the cruel, domineering demeanor he exhibited in life. He appears to Juicy to demand revenge for his murder, expecting his son to abandon his gentle nature and commit an act of violence to honor their blood bond.

Tio is Juicy's happy-go-lucky, easily distracted cousin. He serves as a laid-back confidant for Juicy, offering an outside perspective on the family's intense dynamics. Though he often seems oblivious to social decorum and prioritizes getting high, Tio occasionally shares unexpected insights about generational trauma and the importance of self-preservation.

Larry is a young Marine and the son of Rabby. He attends the family barbecue in his formal military uniform, a choice that earns him high praise from Rev and Rabby but looks awkward to Juicy. Larry projects a rigid performance of traditional masculinity to please his mother, though he displays signs of shyness and discomfort beneath the surface.

Opal is Rabby's daughter and a childhood friend of Juicy. A self-identified queer woman, she is forced by her mother to wear a dress to the party, which contrasts heavily with her usual hoodies and preference for covering up. Opal is blunt, sometimes sullen, and deeply frustrated by the pressure to perform femininity, though she hesitates to completely defy her mother.

Rabby is a family friend of Tedra who takes immense pride in her children's outward success. She is highly focused on appearances and social decorum, demanding that her son and daughter conform strictly to traditional gender roles. Rabby derives her self-worth from how well her children present themselves to the community, remaining largely oblivious to their internal struggles.
