Plot Summary

The novel is set in a world where two kingdoms, the human realm of Dranada and the Raven realm of Vhaerya, have been locked in decades of war. Ravens are shapeshifters who can transform into flocks of black birds called an unkindness, each possessing magical abilities known as gifts. The war began when King Barat of Dranada used the alleged kidnapping of his betrothed by Raven King Omaniel as pretext to invade Vhaerya, though the true motive may have been control of aerymel, a rare and precious metal mined in Raven lands.

The story opens with a childhood flashback. Galantia, the young daughter of Lord Brisden, a powerful human lord who holds the coastal stronghold of Tidestone, grows up emotionally neglected by her parents. When a Raven prisoner escapes the dungeons beneath Tidestone, Galantia stops him by tipping a basket of apples into his path. Lord Brisden, pleased for the first time, orders the chapel bells to ring in her honor. She conflates this rare parental approval with violence against Ravens.

Years later, Galantia travels toward the capital city of Ammarett with her mother and Risa, her devoted nursemaid and only source of genuine affection, to wed Prince Domren, King Barat’s son, in a politically arranged betrothal. Along the way, she witnesses the devastation of war: burned fields, starving peasants, and the public torture of a woman accused of being a Raven. The journey ends when Ravens attack the village of Larpen. A Raven woman named Lorn murders Risa after Galantia reveals her identity as Lord Brisden’s daughter. A green-eyed Raven pathfinder named Sebian, a scout with heightened senses, captures Galantia alive, explaining that Captain Asker, a Raven military leader with the gift of prophetic vision, foresaw her arrival.

In a forest camp, Galantia meets Malyr, known as the Lord of Shadows, who commands the Raven army. When he learns she is a Brisden, he nearly strangles her to death with his shadows—dark magical tendrils he can barely control. A blind healer named Elovan, who possesses the rare gift of void—the ability to absorb another’s shadow magic—saves her life. Asker proposes exchanging Galantia for his bonded mate Marla, a fellow fate whom Lord Brisden holds captive at Tidestone. Without Marla, whose presence strengthens Asker’s visions, the Raven war effort has stalled. Malyr reluctantly agrees and orders Sebian to transport Galantia to Deepmarsh Castle, the Ravens’ stronghold surrounded by impassable marshland.

Flashbacks reveal Malyr’s traumatic history. He is Prince Malyr of House Khysal, the last surviving member of Vhaerya’s royal family. As a boy, his uncontrollable deathweaver shadows, the most powerful destructive gift among Ravens, accidentally killed his parents and engulfed the city of Valtaris in deadly darkness after a catapult strike from Brisden’s forces killed his little sister Naya. Captured and imprisoned in Tidestone’s dungeons alongside his brother Harlen, Malyr endured years of starvation, beatings, and sexual violence at Lord Brisden’s direct command. When Harlen attempted escape, Malyr’s fear of his own shadows prevented him from helping, and Harlen was caught and killed. Malyr and Lorn, who had been imprisoned in an adjacent cell, eventually escaped by leaping from a cliff and triggering their shifts.

At Deepmarsh, Malyr torments Galantia, carving his house sigil into her chest and setting his ravens to attack her. Sebian intervenes, tending her wounds and offering comfort. A pattern emerges: Malyr inflicts pain and humiliation while Sebian provides care. Galantia discovers that her body responds with arousal to Malyr’s cruelty, a reaction that confuses and shames her. Before a scheduled feast, Galantia meets Lady Cecilia, Lord Taradur’s daughter, who instructs Galantia to call her Cici. Cici gives Galantia a low-cut dress to wear, which Galantia realizes has been deliberately chosen to show off the sigil on her chest. At the feast, Cecila tells Galantia that many human lords have brought their daughters to Malyr, hoping to secure a politically advantageous marriage. Malyr forces Galantia to kneel at his feet and uses his shadows to stimulate her sexually beneath her dress in front of the court, humiliating and angering her. When he offers her bread or commands her to lick a knife until it cuts her, she defiantly licks the blade, intensifying his dangerous fixation. A woman named Lorn enters and attacks Galantia, pulling her hair and demanding to know what she is doing there. She then passionately and performatively kisses Malyr while Malyr stares at Galantia.

Sebian and Galantia grow closer. He takes her to the castle library, where she reads Raven histories that challenge everything she was taught about the war. A mysterious raven enters her chamber during a storm and leaves a blue silk ribbon, a traditional Raven courting gift. Frightened, she flees to Sebian’s room. They share an intimate encounter, and she falls asleep on his chest, finding safety she has never known.

The hostage exchange collapses when Lord Brisden’s envoy refuses to return Marla, having recognized her strategic value. Instead, Brisden proposes Galantia’s betrothal to Malyr, offering his army as an alliance. Enraged, Malyr violently ruptures Galantia’s maidenhead with his fingers in front of the envoy to destroy her value as a bargaining piece, an act that Galantia defiantly insists changes nothing, as she has never held value in her family’s eyes. Sebian watches helplessly, consumed by guilt.

Galantia decides to take control of her fate. She visits Malyr and proposes marriage herself, arguing that her father’s army is indispensable and promising to infiltrate Tidestone to free Marla. Malyr accepts. As wedding preparations begin, including a traditional Raven betrothal ceremony called a kjaer, Malyr’s behavior shifts. He gifts her a bracelet, speaks ancient oaths, grooms her hair with tender strokes, and surprises her with a human dance his mother taught him. He later kisses Galantia for the first time at the western cliffs and confesses he first saw her as a child on the beach the day he escaped the dungeons. He admits his desire for her torments him because loving her feels like betraying his dead family. Galantia braids his hair, an intimate gesture reserved for bonded mates, and he allows it.

Sebian returns from pursuing a reported sighting of Prince Domren in the north, having found no trace. Suspicious of Malyr’s claim to have sent grain to Tidestone, Sebian intercepts the convoy and discovers the wagons contain disassembled siege weapons. Malyr has been planning to attack Tidestone all along, using the wedding festivities as cover.

When Sebian reveals the deception, Galantia rushes to Cici’s chambers and finds her wearing the wedding gown. The dress was always meant for Cici; Malyr promised her father his daughter’s hand in exchange for military support. Malyr arrives and confirms everything: Galantia was a distraction, her value as a pawn exhausted. He tells her his oaths and kisses meant nothing, that Sebian himself suggested how to exploit her vulnerability. He then exposes Sebian’s secret: Sebian never kissed Galantia because he was already bonded to a fated mate who died, a bond that persists beyond death, meaning his heart was never truly available.

Galantia cries for the first time since childhood as years of suppressed grief pour out. Malyr licks the tears from her face, declaring there is no love for her anywhere. Something primal erupts from within her: a blinding storm of white feathers. Galantia shifts into an unkindness of white ravens for the first time, revealing herself to be a Raven, and flies east into the winter sky.
