Plot Summary

Canadian professional bull rider Emmett Bush agrees to be the bachelor on a new reality dating show, Romance Ranch, to earn a $500,000 paycheck and save his family’s sport-horse breeding farm, Stal Brandt, from bankruptcy. His grandparents Tina and Leon Brandt and his siblings, Parker, Evan, and Riley, reluctantly support the plan when they learn that the show will also pay a generous daily fee to film on the farm.

Unbeknownst to Emmett, the show’s newly hired location consultant is Julia Silva, a recent film-studies graduate and the younger sister of Emmett’s biggest rival on the World Bull Riding Federation (WBRF) circuit, Theo Silva. When Julia arrives at the farm, she and Emmett recognize each other immediately. Two years earlier, on a Caribbean cruise, Emmett intervened when he saw a man drug Julia’s drink; he carried the incapacitated Julia to his room to keep her safe, but she fled the next morning without a word. Neither of them has ever told anyone about the incident. Despite the animosity between Emmett and Theo, he and Julia agree to work together professionally, while their signed non-disclosure agreements ensure that no one outside the show, including Theo, will know about it.

As Julia prepares the farm for filming, she and Emmett share a series of charged encounters. He insists on helping her with manual labor, and their begrudging respect grows into a tentative friendship. When filming begins, Emmett is stiff and uncomfortable with the manufactured romance. The show’s sleazy executive producer, Richard Wadsworth, berates him for not living up to his “playboy” reputation. Distraught, Emmett confesses to Julia that he’s only doing the show for the money. She advises him to fully commit to the role to secure the paycheck for his family.

While scouting a hiking location called Prickle Point, Julia falls and gets covered in painful cactus spines. Emmett finds her limping back to the set and takes her to his private cottage to help. As he removes the spines, the moment of intense vulnerability leads him to confess his painful family history: He considers his mother’s family name, Brandt, to be his real last name, especially since he and his siblings grew up under their grandparents’ care. His abusive biological father, Carl Bush, was a former rodeo rider, and when he saw Emmett’s talent for rodeo, he coerced Emmett to compete under the Bush name. This shared intimacy deepens Emmett and Julia’s bond, and they begin meeting secretly at a local diner, talking for hours.

The pressures of the show mount as Richard manufactures drama by forcing Emmett to choose Evelyn, the contestant who’s being framed as “evil,” for a one-on-one date at Prickle Point. During the date, Evelyn kisses a reluctant Emmett, but he pointedly looks at Julia, who’s watching from the crew area. When Evelyn tries to escalate the physical contact, Emmett rejects her, causing her to fall into a patch of cacti. Emmett walks off the set.

Meanwhile, news of Emmett’s role on the show is leaked to the public, and Theo confronts Julia, warning her to stay away from his rival. Richard continues to escalate the show’s drama, culminating in a physical fight between Evelyn and another contestant, Cookie, at a country bar. Overwhelmed, Emmett flees the set and finds Julia. They share a desperate, passionate kiss behind the bar before being almost caught by a producer.

Shaken, they agree that they must stay away from each other, and Emmett pushes her to go on a blind date. His subsequent jealousy, however, leads him to crash the date. Their connection is further solidified when Carl appears at the farm; Julia stops him from entering the property, and Emmett’s grandmother Tina backs her up with a rifle, chasing Carl away. Unable to stay apart any longer, Emmett and Julia begin a secret affair, sneaking her into his cottage with the help of his sister Parker and a sympathetic contestant, Catherine.

Richard discovers the affair through illegal surveillance cameras that he placed without consent, including one inside Emmett’s cottage. He extorts Emmett with the footage, threatening to ruin Julia’s nascent film-industry career and sue him for breach of contract unless he manufactures drama with the final contestants.

Shortly after, Emmett walks in on Richard having sex with Evelyn in his production trailer. Disgusted, Emmett quits the show on the spot. He goes to his grandparents and confesses his love for Julia, explaining his decision to quit, which means that they won’t get the money. They offer their unconditional support, telling him that his happiness is more important than the money. Meanwhile, Richard directs a crew member to show Julia doctored footage that appears to show Emmett having sex with Evelyn.

Devastated, Julia sends Emmett a text asking how he could betray her. Parker finds a heartbroken Julia and brings her to the family’s secret hiding spot, the basement crawlspace. Over a few drinks, she helps Julia realize that the footage was likely fabricated. Frantic after being unable to find Julia, Emmett finally locates her in the crawlspace. He reveals that he quit the show and that Richard faked the footage.

The next day, Emmett’s lawyer confirms that Richard’s illegal surveillance has voided the contract. The network, faced with a potential lawsuit, agrees to pay out the full contract to the Brandt family and provides Julia with a glowing letter of recommendation. The show is officially canceled, and all footage is ordered to be destroyed.

Nine months later, Julia is an assistant director on a WBRF docuseries, traveling with Emmett on his final rodeo season. At the world finals, Emmett needs a score of 90 or higher to win his first and only championship. He delivers a near-perfect 91.5-point ride, achieving his lifelong dream. Julia rushes into the arena, and they share a celebratory kiss as the crowd cheers.

Two years later, on Christmas Day, Emmett and Julia slow dance by the fire in the Brandt family farmhouse. Reflecting on how she has healed him, he drops to one knee and proposes. Julia accepts, agreeing to be “stuck together forever” (431).
