Freed, the sixth installment in the Fifty Shades series, retells the events of Fifty Shades Freed from the perspective of Christian Grey, a billionaire CEO haunted by childhood abuse and a history of consensual dominance-and-submission sexual relationships. The novel follows Christian and his fiancée, then wife, Anastasia "Ana" Steele, from their engagement through their first wedding anniversary as they confront external threats, internal conflicts, and the challenge of building a genuine partnership.

The story opens in June 2011, with Christian and Ana in the boathouse at his parents' Bellevue estate following their engagement. Their celebration is cut short when Christian's father, Carrick Grey, a prominent lawyer, confronts him about Elena Lincoln, a family friend who initiated a sexual relationship with Christian when he was 15. Christian's adoptive mother, Grace Grey, a doctor, has just revealed the affair. Carrick calls Elena's actions criminal, questions whether Christian is "husband material," and pushes for a prenuptial agreement. Christian is deeply wounded and storms out. The rift lingers for weeks until Carrick arrives at Grey House, Christian's corporate headquarters, to apologize, admitting he projected his own anger at himself for failing to protect his son.

Christian severs all ties with Elena, instructing his lawyer to gift her the Esclava salon business and telling Elena their relationship is over. He also faces a more dangerous threat: The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) investigation into the crash-landing of Charlie Tango, Christian's helicopter, reveals suspicious engine damage suggesting sabotage. Christian reinstates additional bodyguards and orders Ana to be accompanied at all times.

Wedding planning produces further tensions. Ana refuses to include the word "obey" in her vows, arguing that disagreements should be resolved through communication. Christian, whose need for control stems from his traumatic childhood, withdraws emotionally for two days. Ana confronts him, calling his behavior a "deal breaker" and threatening to return to her apartment. Shaken, Christian relents. His therapist, Dr. John Flynn, counsels that compromise is central to marriage.

Before the wedding, the couple shares formative experiences: sailing on the Fourth of July, soaring in a new sailplane over Washington, and intimate encounters in Christian's playroom. Christian asks his brother Elliot Grey, a contractor, to be his best man. Elliot organizes a bachelor party featuring zip-lining, tandem skydiving, and a casino night in Vancouver, Canada.

The wedding takes place on July 30 at the Grey family estate. Ana walks down the aisle escorted by her father, Ray Steele. They exchange personalized vows. That night, Christian reads an e-mail confirming the National Transportation Safety Board's (NTSB) finding that Charlie Tango's fuel lines were deliberately cut but resolves not to burden Ana.

The couple honeymoons in London, Paris, and the South of France aboard a chartered yacht. A conflict erupts when Ana sunbathes topless in Monte Carlo; Christian retaliates by marking her body with hickeys. Ana throws a hairbrush at him and declares the marks a "hard limit"—an absolute, non-negotiable boundary. The honeymoon is disrupted further when an incendiary device is planted at Grey Enterprises Holdings (GEH), Christian's company, in Seattle. Ana identifies the arsonist from security footage as Jack Hyde, her former boss at Seattle Independent Publishing (SIP), whom Christian fired for sexually harassing her.

After returning to Seattle, Christian and Ana are pursued by a car with false license plates; Ana drives at high speed to escape. Tensions arise over Ana's decision to keep her maiden name at work. Christian, who views his adoptive surname as representing everything his parents gave him, is hurt. After a heated confrontation, Ana agrees to change her name but remains frustrated by his controlling approach. That evening she cuts his hair, and he asks her to wash it, confessing it would make him feel cherished; no one has ever done so before.

On a weekend trip to Aspen in late August, Elliot proposes to Ana's best friend, Kate Kavanagh, and Christian congratulates his brother warmly. Hyde is refused bail on September 1. When Leila Williams, a woman who previously served as Christian's submissive partner in a consensual dominance-and-submission relationship and once held Ana at gunpoint, visits Ana at SIP to say thank you, Christian fires Ana's bodyguard for allowing it. Ana defends her decision and criticizes Christian for being heartless.

Ana's father Ray is seriously injured in a car accident on September 9. Christian flies to Portland, stays at Ana's side during Ray's surgery and induced coma, and arranges for Grace to consult with the medical team. He organizes Ana's birthday dinner and gives her a charm bracelet and a white Audi R8 Spyder. Ray wakes and is transferred to a Seattle hospital.

On September 13, Ana tells Christian she is pregnant. He reacts with explosive rage and storms out, ending up at Elena's salon. They go to a bar, where he drinks heavily. Elena makes a pass at him; he recoils, tells her he loves his wife, and they part for good. He returns home drunk. Ana discovers Elena's text on his phone and is devastated. The next morning, she tells him he is behaving like a "petulant adolescent," declares she chooses "this defenseless baby" over him, and moves to the upstairs bedroom.

Before they can reconcile, Hyde strikes. Released on bail posted by Elena's ex-husband, Eric Lincoln, Hyde kidnaps Christian's sister Mia Grey and demands $5 million from Ana, threatening to kill Mia if anyone is told. His ransom note taunts Christian with the cryptic phrase "Baby Bird." Ana withdraws the money, hides her cell phone in the cash bags so Christian can track the signal, and confronts Hyde alone at a derelict building, shooting him with a gun she found in Christian's desk. Christian and Jason Taylor, his head of personal security, follow the GPS signal and find Ana unconscious with bruised ribs and a hairline skull fracture. Christian kicks Hyde before Taylor restrains him. Mia is found drugged but unharmed.

Ana is unconscious for over 24 hours. Christian maintains a vigil, weeping in his mother's arms for the first time in his life. When Ana wakes, she assures him she was never leaving. Welch, Christian's head of security investigations, reveals that Christian and Hyde lived in the same foster home in Detroit for two months after Christian's birth mother died. Christian's parents present his original birth certificate, showing his birth name was Kristian Pusztai, born to Életke Pusztai, a 19-year-old Hungarian woman. Memories surface, including a children's book, Are You My Mother?, from which his foster mother nicknamed him "Baby Bird," the same phrase Hyde used in the ransom note. Christian learns that Lincoln posted Hyde's bail and retaliates by using GEH's majority stake to fire Lincoln Timber's board, bankrupting Lincoln.

Over several days of recovery, Christian tells Ana the full story of how his relationship with Elena began, his evening at the bar after learning of the pregnancy, and his deepest fear: that he will be a terrible father. Ana responds that she would never allow that. They settle on "Blip" as the baby's nickname. Flynn counsels Christian to forgive himself and eventually his birth mother. Ana initiates a return to the playroom, signaling the full restoration of trust.

The epilogue takes place on their first wedding anniversary, July 30, 2012. Christian watches Ana breastfeed their son, Theodore Raymond Grey, now nearly three months old. Hyde is serving 30 years in prison. Christian gives Ana a leather-bound album of photographs of her and Ted. They spend the day at home, deeply content as husband, wife, and parents.
