Garnet Flats

The novel is set in Quincy, a small fictional town in Montana, and alternates between the perspectives of Talia Eden, a resident physician at Quincy Memorial Hospital, and Foster Madden, an Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) champion preparing for a title defense. The two confront a painful shared past as they attempt to rebuild a relationship torn apart seven years earlier.

Talia tracks her consecutive good days at the hospital with tally marks inside her locker, a coping mechanism against friction from Rachel, the charge nurse who nitpicks her work, and from patients who question her competence. Her streak ends when she walks into the hospital lobby and recognizes the voice of Foster Madden, the man she dated for over a year at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV), who broke her heart by choosing to marry her best friend and college roommate, Vivienne Angel. Talia hides behind the reception desk until her brother Knox and sister-in-law Memphis redirect Foster elsewhere.

That night, Foster arrives at Talia's house with a key to a building he has purchased in Quincy and a velvet pouch containing a two-carat diamond ring, the exact ring Talia once chose as her favorite during a store visit years ago. He reveals he is divorced but refuses to explain further. The next day, Talia visits the building, a dilapidated gym Foster bought sight unseen to serve as a training facility and temporary home. Talia rejects him, drops the ring on the floor, and demands he leave.

Foster spends a solitary Christmas renovating the gym, viewing the labor as penance. Talia's father, Harrison, confronts Foster and tells him to leave, but Foster declares he has loved Talia since he was twenty-three and that Harrison does not know the full story. Foster then finds Talia at the hospital and promises that if she hears him out and still wants him gone, he will go. She reluctantly agrees to dinner.

Over pizza, they reconnect through shared memories, but a phone call from Vivienne interrupts. When Foster admits he still talks to his ex-wife daily, Talia bolts. Foster follows her home and kisses her for the first time in seven years. Talia pulls away and asks if he cheated on her with Vivienne. He denies it. She tells him to leave Quincy, and he storms out, though both are shaken by a kiss that proves they are far from over.

Talia confides the full story to her twin sister, Lyla, who is hurt Talia kept the secret for years but encourages her to let Foster explain. That night, Talia drives to the gym, finds Foster training in his boxing ring, and climbs in to confront him, throwing real punches fueled by seven years of rage. She notices a tattoo on his ribs reading "GARNET FLATS," the name of a meadow on the Eden family ranch where Talia once dreamed of building a home with him. Their anger transforms into desire, and they sleep together. Talia leaves without answering when he asks whether he has truly lost her.

On New Year's Day, Foster begins his confession. He reveals a difficult childhood with parents who had gambling addictions and explains that Arlo Angel, Vivienne's father and the owner of Angel's Gym in Las Vegas, became his mentor. After meeting Talia, she became his reason to fight, but his insecurity about money led him to participate in illegal underground fights for extra cash. Arlo, secretly entrenched in that world, orchestrated a fight Foster was paid fifty thousand dollars to throw, then used the incident as permanent blackmail. When Arlo decided Foster should marry Vivienne, who was pregnant by a man connected to a dangerous gang, Foster obeyed rather than risk Talia's safety. The marriage was Arlo's mechanism for controlling Foster's career and earnings. Foster insists he never cheated. Talia is furious he kept her in the dark, calling him a coward for not trusting her with the truth.

Another revelation blindsides Talia: Outside the Eloise Inn, Quincy's hotel, seven-year-old Kadence runs out shouting "Daddy" and leaps into Foster's arms. Talia had no idea Foster had a daughter because she spent seven years deliberately never searching for him online or watching his fights.

Despite this shock, Talia and Foster reconnect. Foster brings Kadence to the hospital for a checkup, and Talia steps in with warmth and professionalism. Foster insists Kadence call her "Dr. Eden," telling Talia she will never be "just Talia" to him, a moment that moves her because no one at the hospital uses her professional title. When the gym's furnace breaks during a cold snap, Talia invites Foster and Kadence to stay at her house. Living together feels natural. Foster tells Talia he loves her, but she cannot say it back. He also reveals that he and Vivienne never had a sexual relationship during their marriage.

Vivienne approaches Talia at the Eloise Inn and reveals that Kadence is not Foster's biological child. Vivienne became pregnant by a violent man connected to a gang, and Arlo used the situation to force Foster into a marriage that would protect Vivienne and tighten his control. Foster has always been Kadence's father in every way that matters. Arlo maintained his leverage until his death from a heart attack in November, after which Foster and Vivienne divorced.

The emotional turning point comes after a devastating hospital shift. A car accident kills a father and costs a boy both legs. Talia works twelve hours reviving the mother three times. Rachel, who is on leave, appears and blames Talia, revealing that the drunk driver was Rachel's own son. Foster finds Talia sobbing in her Jeep and carries her inside, holding her for hours. He asks her to voice her fears: Will he break her heart again? Leave? Stop loving her? To each, he answers: never. Talia finally tells him she loves him.

A new crisis emerges when Vivienne reveals that her fiancé, Dex, has accumulated a three-million-dollar gambling debt with Tony Sabbatini, a mafia-connected casino owner. Dex has bet his remaining money against Foster in the upcoming fight. Vivienne asks Foster to lose so the bet pays off. Foster refuses. Instead, he pays off the debt directly, using leverage from a secret notebook Arlo kept containing names and connections in the underground fighting world.

Foster and Talia fly to Las Vegas for his title defense against Scott Savage. Foster secretly flies Talia's sisters to sit ringside and sends Talia a notepad, asking her to tally his punches, reviving a ritual from their early days. The fight lasts three rounds before Foster delivers a knockout combination. Talia leaps to her feet in tears.

Back in Montana, Foster proposes in the kitchen with the diamond ring he has carried for months. Talia holds out her hand without hesitation.

The epilogue, set one month later, shows Vivienne relocated to Quincy and the couple hiring an architect to build a home on Garnet Flats, on land gifted by Talia's parents. Talia reveals she is pregnant. Foster's trainer, Jasper Vale, who has also moved to Quincy, reveals he has accidentally married Talia's sister Eloise during a drunken night. Bonus scenes depict the birth of their son, Jude, and a wedding at the Eloise Inn.
