The third and final installment of the Serpent & Dove trilogy opens in the aftermath of La Mascarade des Crânes, a catastrophic confrontation with the witch queen Morgane le Blanc. In the previous books, Louise "Lou" le Blanc, a witch and Morgane's daughter, married Chasseur (witch hunter) Reid Diggory. Together with Lou's best friend Coco (a Dame Rouge blood witch), Reid's half-brother Beau (the crown prince), and their late friend Ansel (a young Chasseur initiate killed by Morgane), they fought Morgane at the masquerade. Coco's grief ignited an inextinguishable black Hellfire beneath Cesarine, the capital, and the group fled north.

As the novel begins, Lou behaves strangely: Her skin is ice-cold, she does not blink, and she attacks food with animal ferocity. Trapped inside her own consciousness, the real Lou struggles against crushing darkness. Nicholina le Clair, a blood witch allied with Morgane and Josephine (La Voisin, Coco's aunt), has used a possession spell to inhabit Lou's body, planning to deliver Lou to Morgane at Chateau le Blanc, Morgane's castle stronghold, while consuming Lou's soul. Within the darkness, Lou discovers dozens of other trapped souls, people Nicholina has possessed over the years whose identities have eroded into a collective called "Legion."

The group shelters in an abandoned coastal church, where Father Achille Altier, a reclusive priest, offers them refuge. Célie Tremblay, a young aristocrat traumatized by Morgane, arrives with stolen wealth and a hemlock injection that weakens witches. Among her items, Coco discovers La Petite Larme, a mirror-locket from the Wistful Waters that reveals absolute truth. When Lou attacks a werewolf they encounter at a nearby lighthouse and flees, Coco uses La Petite Larme to expose the truth: The person in Lou's body is Nicholina.

With no way to exorcise Nicholina conventionally, the group seeks L'Eau Mélancolique (the Wistful Waters), which can heal but also kill. In this world, magic operates through visible colored patterns that those with magical ability can pull to shape reality. Reid tries to use his own patterns to help Lou, but every one leads to Morgane, a cost he refuses to pay. Along the journey, Nicholina carves a warning into Lou's flesh and summons crows to attack the group, alerting Morgane to their destination. They need black pearls to pay the waters' guardian, and the mysterious peddler Madame Sauvage trades three for favors: Beau and Coco must kiss, and Reid must plant a pouch of seeds.

At L'Eau Mélancolique, the guardian reveals himself as Constantin, the legendary saint from the tale of Angelica and Constantin, cursed to guard the waters eternally. Only Reid, Coco, and Lou may enter. Each must drink and speak a truth. Reid acknowledges that he, like Morgane, has killed for love.

Submerged, Lou's consciousness separates from Nicholina's. She witnesses Nicholina's tragic past: Once a young mother who lost her lover and son to illness, Nicholina turned to dark magic seeking a cure for death. The two fight through shared memories. Nicholina forces Lou to relive Ansel's death, nearly breaking her, but the mysterious white dog that has followed the group since Cesarine transforms into Ansel's spirit. He shields Lou and helps her stab Nicholina through the heart, exorcising her. Before parting, Ansel shows Lou a vision of a peaceful home with her loved ones and tells her to stop living in fear. Lou surges to the surface, fully healed.

On the beach, Morgane and Josephine arrive with witches and captured Beau and Célie. Desperate to save his friends, Reid pulls a golden pattern he has been resisting throughout the novel, one that connects him to Morgane. Both collapse. Reid has erased Morgane's memory of Lou at the cost of his own memories of her.

Angelica, Coco's long-lost mother and the legendary blood witch from Constantin's tale, emerges from the waters and drives Josephine away, revealing they are blood-bound twins: If one dies, the other does too. Angelica guides the group underwater to Le Présage, the Oracle City ruled by the goddess Isla. When Isla goads Lou, calling her ordinary, Lou erupts in anger and transforms into the Maiden, one of the Triple Goddess's three forms. Isla explains that Morgane's defiance caused the Triple Goddess to revoke Morgane's blessing and bestow it on Lou, making her the new La Dame des Sorcières with the power to shift between Maiden, Mother, and Crone. Isla demands they steal Angelica's Ring from Chateau le Blanc in exchange for aid from the melusines, the aquatic beings of Le Présage.

Reid wakes with no memory of Lou, reverting to his witch-hunting mentality and attacking her before Beau and Jean Luc, the Chasseur captain, intervene. The group infiltrates Chateau le Blanc, where Lou uses her new white patterns, a deeper magic connected to the land, to turn them into near-invisible shadows. They steal the ring and escape. Over the return journey, Reid slowly warms to Lou; during a drunken game of truth or dare, he tells her she makes him feel "right" and "whole."

At L'Eau Mélancolique, Angelica reveals the ancient origins of the witch conflict: Josephine's violent rebellion, known as "The Rift," stripped all subsequent witchlings of internal magic, creating the Dames Blanches, the white witches Morgane leads. A vision from the waters shows King Auguste condemning Reid's mother, Madame Labelle, to burn in three days. The group sails for Cesarine, but their rescue plan unravels when Auguste forces Jean Luc to inject Lou and Reid with real hemlock and declares they will all burn at sunset. Lou and Reid awaken in Chasseur Tower, caged in wood from a Balisarda tree, which neutralizes magic. Lou tells Reid their entire story, trying to trigger his memories, but nothing works.

At the stake, Beau, disguised as Father Achille through Coco's magic, reveals himself at the last moment. Allies attack: Claud (a god of the forest), Coco, allied werewolves, Troupe de Fortune, and melusines. Madame Labelle has already been freed. A spark from Beau's torch ignites the Hellfire-soaked platform. Lou absorbs everyone's pain. Coco's tears fall as rain, quenching the eternal Hellfire, because the fire stems from her grief and her love now soothes it. A memory breaks through for Reid: the moment he first fell in love with Lou, when she absorbed a condemned woman's pain. He pulls a multicolored pattern, and his memories return, simultaneously restoring Morgane's memory of Lou. Lou explodes from the wreckage in a shower of light.

The final battle rages through Cesarine. Claud confronts Morgane in his great forest form, the Woodwose, but his direct intervention breaks the Old Laws, divine rules barring gods from interfering in mortal affairs. The earth cracks open and swallows him, splitting the city and separating Lou from her allies. In Brindelle Park, the trapped souls within Nicholina rebel, restraining Josephine long enough for Angelica to slit her twin's throat. All three die together due to the blood bond. Across the chasm, Lou fights Morgane alone with diminishing power until Célie stabs Morgane with her hemlock injection and Lou draws Célie's blade across her mother's throat.

In the aftermath, the survivors begin rebuilding. Beau grieves his half-sister Victoire, killed during the battle. Father Achille takes charge of rebuilding Cesarine. Reid gives his Balisarda blade to Célie, telling her the Chasseur Tower must be rebuilt differently. In an epilogue narrated by Ansel's spirit, Lou and Reid marry at Chateau le Blanc in the old pear grove. Madame Sauvage reappears, and Reid's planted seeds have grown into new pear trees, a sign of renewal. Ansel watches the celebration, then meets his parents' spirits and departs to find peace.
