Plot Summary

He Who Fights with Monsters is the first book in a LitRPG progression fantasy series. The story follows Jason Asano, a twenty-three-year-old Australian of mixed Japanese and Australian heritage, who is accidentally transported to a parallel world where magic, monsters, and gods are real.

Jason wakes up naked, hairless, and disoriented in a hedge maze, confronted by floating interface screens resembling a video game system. These include a quest system, inventory, map, and a character sheet listing his race as "Outworlder," a designation for someone from another world. A quest instructs him to explore the maze, and he fights weak, low-tier monsters, earning healing ointment, spirit coins, and basic clothing. He overhears two men discussing eating people and holding captive adventurers, confirming that the estate belongs to cannibals.

Descending into a well, Jason discovers an underground ritual chamber where an unconscious man in wizard robes lies inside a damaged magic circle. The man wakes, blames Jason for ruining his summoning spell, and attacks with a knife. Jason kills him in the struggle, his first kill. Deeply shaken, he barely escapes when the wizard's massive snake familiar pursues him up the well; falling masonry fortuitously crushes the snake. Jason loots the chamber, finding skill books, coins, and a key ring. He absorbs a Dark Essence, a cube of concentrated magic that bonds to his Speed attribute and grants him the ability to see through darkness. He also uses an awakening stone, a magical item that unlocks a new ability, gaining the Cloak of Night: a conjured garment of living shadow and starlight that reduces his weight and lets him walk on water.

Jason is captured by the blood cult and caged alongside four prisoners: Rufus Remore, a human adventurer; Gary (Gareth Xandier), an enormous lion-headed humanoid called a leonid; Farrah Hurin, a human mage with devastating volcanic powers; and Anisa, an elf priestess. All four wear suppression collars that seal their abilities. The cult underestimates Jason, leaving him without a collar. He uses silver spirit coins to burst open his cage, frees the others, and together they fight through the cult's underground sacrifice chamber. Jason provokes the two cult leaders into arguing, then uses a gold coin's burst of strength to hurl them to their deaths.

The group realizes they have inadvertently completed the cult's ritual. A sanguine horror, an apocalypse-class creature capable of mass destruction, begins forming from swarming carrion leeches. Farrah, her collar removed, unleashes streams of lava to incinerate the main mass while the others destroy individual leeches. They eliminate the creature before it grows beyond control, and Jason collects Blood and Sin Essences as rewards.

Trekking back through the desert, Jason absorbs his remaining essences. The combination of Dark, Blood, and Sin spontaneously produces a Doom Essence, completing his set of four and raising him to iron rank, the setting's lowest formal power tier. The transformation purges impurities from his body, leaving him unconscious. His new abilities center on afflictions: bleeding effects, life-draining spells, disease cleansing, and escalating damage over time. He also summons a familiar, a sanguine horror he names Colin, which takes the form of a leech swarm.

During an overnight rest at the Vane Estate, Rufus tells Jason that adventurers stand as shields for the helpless, acknowledging that the role demands hard choices and lost sleep. Jason, haunted by the people he killed, remains uncertain. Anisa clashes with Jason over his sinister powers, and Rufus dismisses her for prioritizing religious ideals over team safety. The group sets out toward the coastal city of Greenstone.

Jason separates from the trio to travel through the Mistrun Delta's farming towns, healing sick villagers with his cleansing ability, which removes diseases and poisons at no cost. He meets Jory Tillman, an alchemist running a low-cost clinic, and arrives in Greenstone, a city split between the working-class Old City and the wealthy Island connected by massive bridges.

In Greenstone, Rufus, Gary, and Farrah subject Jason to intensive training: physical conditioning, footwork, aura manipulation, and perception exercises. Jason struggles with his shadow teleportation until he learns to relax into shadow rather than force it. He visits the Goddess of Knowledge, who confirms that the World-Phoenix Token he carries can return him home but requires an act of faith. Rufus presents Jason with a legendary martial arts skill book, Way of the Reaper, and Gary gifts him Dread Salvation, a sword that grows stronger when enemies resist its afflictions.

Jason passes the field assessment administered by the Adventure Society, the organization that licenses and governs adventurers, under Instructor Vincent Trenslow. In the final engagement against a pack of margolls, aggressive monsters, he achieves a breakthrough by integrating his martial techniques with his essence abilities for the first time. He receives his badge and begins taking contracts.

Jason builds relationships across Greenstone. He bonds with fellow adventurer Humphrey Geller and Humphrey's mother Danielle, a silver-rank adventurer. He begins a romance with Cassandra Mercer, invests in Jory's clinic, and partners with Clive Standish, a Magic Society researcher. Together, Jason, Humphrey, and Clive discover an ancient underground complex connected to a lost order of assassins and defeat a bronze-rank marsh hydra, during which Jason's interface ability evolves to allow party communication. Jason also uncovers a land-grab scheme orchestrated by Thadwick Mercer, Cassandra's brother, and resolves it with political discretion, earning a promotion to three-star adventurer.

A parallel storyline follows Sophie Wexler, a celestine, one of the world's non-human races, who possesses extraordinary speed and is trapped between competing criminal and political forces. Adventure Society Director Elspeth Arella uses Sophie's continued freedom as leverage against Lucian Lamprey, the corrupt director of Greenstone's Magic Society. Jason and Clive investigate Sophie's robberies, determine she is stealing components to breach the city's spirit coin vault, and capture her after a chase across the city. Jason shelters Sophie and her friend Belinda in the floating cloud palace of Emir Bahadir, a gold-rank ally.

A grand expedition into an astral space, a magical pocket dimension connected to the desert, suffers a devastating ambush by an army of magical constructs led by robed figures. Farrah dies in battle: after Rufus loses an arm and Gary is critically injured fighting a silver-rank abomination with metal arms grafted into its skeleton, Farrah holds the line alone until the creature's arms pierce her body, killing her instantly. Emir's team rescues scattered adventurers and stabilizes the situation, while Jason organizes a medical camp outside the aperture, the portal connecting the astral space to the physical world.

During a desert trek, Rufus is catatonic with grief until Gary furiously insists that Farrah made her own choices and that claiming responsibility for her death diminishes her sacrifice. Jason performs a ritual to extract Farrah's belongings from her dimensional storage space. Over a campfire, Rufus begins sharing stories about Farrah as the three men toast her memory.

The novel closes with multiple unresolved threads. An inquiry by the Adventure Society's Continental Council, its governing body overseeing branch directors, into the expedition disaster threatens Arella's position, potentially giving Jason leverage to secure Sophie's freedom. Emir reveals that an ancient site connected to Jason's martial art will become an open contract for iron-rank adventurers. Jason still carries the World-Phoenix Token, maintaining the tension between his growing life in this world and the possibility of returning home.
