Chapter 6 Summary: “Banks, Six Years Ago”

During this moment in the past, Banks smiles as she heads home and thinks about how she managed to get to Kai and make him nervous. She considers the possibility of becoming romantically involved with him, though the chances seem slim. She is convinced that Kai only likes more feminine-presenting women. At home, Banks eats soup and bread as her father’s security guards, David, Ilia, and Lev, tease and prod her. The cook, Marina, lectures Banks, telling her that she is now a woman and should not allow men to handle her in such a way. Banks hates the idea of becoming a woman and has always resisted it as long as possible. Marina puts some lipstick on Banks and makes her look in a mirror; suddenly, Banks realizes that Marina is right: She is indeed becoming a woman.

Later, Banks is in her room when a car pulls up and fireworks start to go off. Two men put a sack over Banks’ head and carry her to the trunk of the car. Inside, Banks screams and bangs on the hood, but to no avail. When the car reaches its destination, she is let out and shown the emergency release handle inside the trunk. When she realizes that one of her captors is Kai, she relaxes a little, but she is still angry about the extent of the “prank.” Suddenly, everyone disappears, leaving Banks alone. She wanders toward an old bell tower and notices Kai watching her. Kai and Michael corner Banks, and Kai forces himself on her. Banks cannot help but feel aroused and knows that Kai would never actually hurt her, but she also does not want to advertise her desire for him. When Kai lets her up, he leads her into the bell tower and sits her on his lap. The two flirt and touch one another, and Banks admits that she does not have a cell phone and did not record or share anything that Kai confessed in the church.

In the middle of their intimacy, Damon appears and pretends not to recognize Banks (whom the narrative will later reveal to be his half-sister). He asks why Kai is so interested in such a plain and boyish girl when there are much prettier ones out there. Damon walks away, and Banks follows him and tried to apologize. She knows that Damon is angry at her for being with a boy, and she seeks his forgiveness, reassuring him that she belongs to him. They talk about buying a house in the countryside together. Damon then surprises Banks by inviting her to the group’s party at the cemetery, but he orders her to stay away from Kai.

Chapter 7 Summary: “Banks, Present”

In the present, Gabriel overrules Banks’s protests and orders her to do whatever Kai wants. He then asks her if she even knows how to sexually please a man, indicating his suspicion that she and Damon are sexually involved with one another. Banks feels disgusted by her father’s insinuation and reflects that she could never love him. However, she does love her brother, Damon. She goes up to the room that Damon used to occupy and realizes how much she misses his scent. Banks finds that one of Damon’s pet snakes is still alive, and she is reminded of the day they first met.

When Banks was 12 and Damon was 13, Banks and her mother went to Gabriel’s house in search of money. Gabriel did not welcome them warmly; instead, he yelled at Banks’s mother, berating her for her drug addiction and lack of financial security. Banks ran into Damon, who pulled her up to that same bedroom and showed her his two pet snakes. Banks was afraid of snakes and of Damon, and she panicked when Damon held her against her will and shoved the snake in her face, telling her that she and him were not the same, and that he was above her. Eight days later, Damon paid Banks’s mother what money he could find, then took Banks with him back to Gabriel’s house. Since then, Banks has “belonged” to Damon, who takes care of her and keeps her apart from the world.

Now, in the present, Banks picks up that same snake and holds it, understanding that it was never venomous or particularly dangerous.

Chapter 8 Summary: “Banks, Six Years Ago”

In the past, Banks was ushered to the party at the cemetery by the same security guards who always watched over her. She was overtaken by the music, the energy, and the number of people at the party. At one point, two of the men went off to drink, and the third got distracted by an old lover, leaving Banks on her own. She wandered toward a group of people who were watching Kai win a fight against an equally matched opponent. Damon found her and grew angry to realize that she was on her own. He taunted her about Kai, telling her that he had a girlfriend much prettier and more desirable than her. Banks twisted away from Damon and ran. As she fled the party, a few unfamiliar men began taunting her. They eventually grabbed her and dropped her into an empty grave. She began screaming for help, and Kai arrived and fought the men off. He jumped into the grave with her, and they seized the opportunity to enjoy a secret kiss out of sight of everyone else.

Soon, however, Damon arrived and angrily pulled Banks out of the grave, then forced her to declare that she loved him most in all the world. Submissively, Banks hung her head and agreed to wait for Damon at home. Before leaving, Damon warned Kai away from Banks, declaring that he, Damon, was the only one allowed to touch her. Kai was confused because he did not even know until that moment that Damon and Banks knew one another at all.

Chapter 9 Summary: “Banks, Present”

Now, Banks waits with her security crew outside of Kai’s house, preparing to go to the Pope Hotel. As she approaches, she notices how unkempt and dingy his place is, and she questions whether he really lives here. She rings the bell, knocks, and yells, but nobody answers, so she goes inside. After she explores a few empty rooms, Kai appears behind her, startling her. He orders her security detail to leave and reminds her that she works for him now. They drive to the hotel together. In the car, Kai notices that Banks is wearing Damon’s old belt, which is covered in notches—one for each girl he slept with in high school.

Banks wonders if Kai thinks there is a notch on that belt for her.

While Kai and Banks are at the hotel, Michael and Will come to scope out the property. They threaten Banks and tell her they’ll kill her if they notice anything strange. Kai disappears to the 13th floor and texts Banks, telling her to meet him up there. She jogs up the 13 flights of stairs and finds Kai out on the balcony, looking down at the seemingly inaccessible 12th floor and wondering how to get there. To prove that the 12th floor does in fact exist, Banks throws her scarf down to its balcony; she and Kai run to the 11th floor, where they look up and see the scarf. Banks daringly attempts to reach it, but fails and comes back down to safety.

Kai stares at Banks and asks her why she wears Damon’s old clothes, but she doesn’t give him an explanation. Kai starts asking Banks all sorts of questions about herself, none of which she answers. She then reclaims some measure of power back for herself when she reminds him that she knows everything about him already, including everywhere he goes and when.

Chapter 10 Summary: “Banks, Present”

Later, Banks approaches Delcour, the building where Michael Crist’s penthouse is located. She finds the penthouse filled with people, and Rika leads her to Kai, who is in a room down the hall. Banks hands Kai the contract that Gabriel wrote up, which includes demands that Kai have children with Vanessa, his new pre-determined wife, as soon as possible. Kai looks at Banks and announces to the room that she works for Gabriel; he implies that she is his hired sex worker.

Banks tries to leave but finds herself drawn in by Kai’s scent and his dark energy, and she also knows that she is obligated to fulfill his demands. He tells her to fetch towels, and along the way, she runs into a woman who attempts to seduce her. Kai intervenes and claims possession of Banks. The two grow aroused by the sounds of Will having sex with an unnamed woman in a nearby room. Banks finds herself kissing and touching Kai’s body until it occurs to her that she is doing exactly what Kai wants her to do. She therefore stops and tries to leave, but she runs into her security guards. Kai reminds them that Banks now works for her, and he only deigns to dismiss her when she admits out loud that she belongs to him. Feeling humiliated and used, Banks leaves, punching and kicking the elevator in her rage.

Chapter 11 Summary: “Kai, Present”

Later, Kai leaves the gym and finds Banks in an alley near the Pope Hotel. He picks her up and takes her to his parents’ house; they are sleeping upstairs and are unaware of Kai and Banks’s presence. Kai asks Banks about her past, asking how she is treated at home. He can tell that she is neglected, and he knows Damon and Gabriel well enough to know that Banks’s life with them must be difficult. Kai serves Banks steak; at first, she says she doesn’t like it. Kai tells her that he grew up in a small apartment with holes in the walls, and his father worked hard to build wealth. Now, Kai admits to feeling like a disappointment to his father. Hearing this confession eases Banks a little, and she tries the steak, admitting that it is her first time tasting it. Kai realizes that Banks probably isn’t being paid well, and he resolves to fix that. He also realizes that he enjoys feeding her and taking care of her.

Chapters 6-11 Analysis

This section of the novel makes it clear that The Psychological Impact of Toxic Power Dynamics plays a central role in the characters’ interactions, for whether the relationship in question is familial or sexual, platonic or romantic, the underlying struggle for dominance and control taints every scene that Douglas crafts. Even though Banks and Kai’s interactions are marked by playful flirtation and amorous touch, the problematic beginnings of their connection continue to cause issues in their interactions. In the flashback chapter, when Kai and his friends “prank” Banks by kidnapping her and threatening to assault her, this traumatic event makes her feel both oppressed and desired. These conflicting emotions blend into a twisted version of attraction that highlights the dysfunctional focus of the dark romance genre, which often glorifies and idealizes abuse. Kai wants control over Banks, but paradoxically, he also wants her to gain control of her own life, and this contradiction deeply confuses her. Kai’s abusive actions further complicate this dynamic, especially when he makes her publicly declare that she “belongs” to him, thereby undermining the very sense of autonomy that he professes to want to inspire in her. As Banks bitterly observes in the aftermath of this moment, she has spent “[y]ears and years of climbing over shit bags like him to just get a peek over the fence, and here he was, grabbing [her] ankles and yanking [her] back down into the pit” (189).

Notably, Banks’s furious contemplation in this scene also hints at the novel’s focus on The Long-Term Consequences of Traumatic Decisions, which are often explored through flashbacks and reflections. For example, Banks’s dysfunctional relationship with Damon is fully displayed when she privately recalls her first meeting with him at age 12, where he provoked her with a harmless snake and saddled her with deep fears of multiple things. As Banks reflects on her past traumas and lingering fears, her memories illustrate the shape of her current perceptions and interactions with Damon, revealing that although she loves her brother, she also resents the power that he continues to hold over her. Likewise, this resentment fuels her anger at Kai when he displays similarly dominant behavior.

These complex dynamics set the tone for Banks’s primary internal conflict, highlighting her struggle to navigate her feelings for Kai even as she tries to maintain her old loyalty to the manipulative Damon. Faced with the past years of her half-brother’s abusive behavior, Banks now sees Kai as the best of both worlds, especially when compared to Damon and the other members of the Four Horsemen. She perceives Kai’s sexual charisma as being healthier than Damon’s, just as she believes that his shows of anger are nowhere near as toxic as Michael’s have proven to be. These internal conflicts add depth to her character and to the narrative as a whole, and Douglas’s strategic shifts to Banks’s first-person perspective provide much greater insights into the character’s thoughts and motivations. This dynamic will intensify as Banks begins to lean into Kai’s growing shows of support and overlook his more problematic behaviors.

Throughout these tumultuous and morally gray chapters, the author even goes so far as to flirt with the topic of incest in order to push the boundaries of the dark romance genre even further. This aspect of the text is on full display when the narrative injects an element of doubt about the true nature of Damon’s relationship with his sister. For example, Banks notices Kai’s interest in the belt she inherited from Damon, which serves as a record of her brother’s sexual conquests. When she imagines Kai’s likely curiosity over the question of whether the belt holds a “tally mark” for her as well, she inwardly admits to herself, “Damon was right. It was strategically advantageous for no one to know who I was to him” (158). Her thoughts on this matter slyly acknowledge the possibility of a sexual relationship with Damon without committing to a full confirmation one way or another, and Douglas uses this sense of ambiguity to create a scene designed to simultaneously shock and titillate a fan base that has come to expect descriptions of social and sexual deviance.
