Plot Summary

Four months after Forest Service investigator Kol Archer found her chained to a tree and near death, held captive by serial killer Travis Moore, Nova Monroe is struggling to reclaim her life. She lives in Starlight Grove, temporarily staying with her best friend Brae, Brae’s son Owen, and Brae’s fiancé, Dex Archer. (Together with his brothers Kol, Wylder, Maverick, and Orion, Dex runs a secret organization called the Hourglass Network, which is dedicated to finding missing persons. The organization is the brothers’ collective attempt to make something good out of their own traumatic backstory: Their father was a serial killer, whom Orion killed to protect his brothers when the boys discovered their father’s deadly secret.) 

Plagued by anxiety, nightmares, and fragmented memories of her captivity, Nova feels suffocated by Brae’s overprotective care. She has also been averse to touch since her ordeal, and as a result, everyone is careful not to touch her at all. Her secret coping mechanism is cliff-jumping into an icy lake, an adrenaline rush that makes her feel alive. She starts a new job as a server at The Boot, a bar owned by Dex’s brother Wylder. There, she and Brae work alongside Cora, the former fiancée of her kidnapper, who behaves awkwardly around her until Nova reassures her. 

Over the past few months, the protective Kol has been keeping a watchful eye on her; Nova clings to his words on the day he found her—“You’re alive. You’re breathing” (4)—and uses them as a mantra to remain calm whenever her trauma rises up. However, one day, Nova experiences a panic attack at work after being harassed by a customer. Seeing her distress, Kol intervenes. He leads her into the woods and teaches her a grounding technique, solidifying a unique bond between them. Recognizing her simultaneous need for independence and emotional support, Kol offers Nova the newly finished apartment above his garage on his family’s property, Twisted Oak Ranch, an offer that she gratefully accepts.

The threat escalates when an envelope containing old news clippings about her kidnapping is left on her car at a remote mountain-biking trail, along with an anonymous note reading, “NEVER FORGET.” Shortly after, a young woman named Heidi Ingram, who bears a resemblance to Nova, goes missing from the same area where Nova was abducted. The town fears a copycat killer, or worse, that Travis Moore might still be alive, as his body was never found after Dex shot him on the day Nova was rescued. Meanwhile, despite Nova and Kol’s growing closeness, Kol’s protective instincts suddenly clash with Nova’s reckless pursuit of adrenaline to manage her trauma, and the two argue. The conflict culminates in a night of passion where Kol cedes all physical control to Nova, helping her to reclaim a sense of agency over her own body.

The situation darkens again when Heidi Ingram’s body is discovered. A bloody necklace belonging to Heidi is then left on Nova’s car with a second note: “IT’S NOT OVER” (201). The direct threat forces the Archer family to place Nova under constant protection. Amid the fear, Nova begins equine therapy, which helps her to remember the repressed memories of her captivity. She recalls that a second person—a woman—was present during her torture, taunting her. The community is thrown into further panic when Piper, Nova’s young, dark-haired coworker from The Boot, vanishes after her shift. Her car is found abandoned with blood inside. Convinced that Heidi and Piper’s disappearances are connected, and fearing that Travis may be the culprit, Kol and his brothers redouble their efforts, working both officially and through their shadow organization to find the new killer.

One evening, Nova invites Cora to Kol’s house, wanting to offer support because she sees Cora as yet another victim of Travis’s deception. As Cora arrives, screams erupt outside. Kol opens the door to find Cora bleeding from a wound in her side. She claims that Reese Gatlin stabbed her and that she stabbed him back. While Nova calls 9-1-1 and applies pressure to the wound, Kol rushes out in search of the attacker. He is shocked to find Reese Gatlin stabbed and bleeding on a nearby road, and he realizes too late that the whole situation is a setup. Meanwhile, inside the house, a suddenly hostile Cora reveals her true nature to Nova: She was Travis’s willing partner, an active participant in his crimes. Her involvement had begun with the pair’s murder of her own abusive mother. Nova now recognizes Cora’s taunting voice from her fragmented memories. Enraged at Nova’s survival and healing, and blaming her for Travis’s death, Cora stabs Nova. Kol breaks through a window and finds Cora holding a wounded Nova hostage. Cora confesses to murdering Heidi, kidnapping Piper, and framing Reese for the attack on herself. Knowing that Cora intends to kill them all, Nova stomps on her foot and elbows her, breaking free. As the two women struggle, Kol fires two shots, killing Cora. As he rushes to Nova’s side, he sees Cora’s knife embedded deep in her abdomen. Nova loses consciousness, and Kol performs CPR, breathing for her until help arrives.

Nova is rushed into surgery and remains in critical condition for days, with Kol refusing to leave her side. While she is unconscious, the sheriff, Roger Oakley, informs the family that Piper has been found alive in a hidden cabin, which was located using Cora’s phone data. Nova eventually wakes, and she and Kol confess their love for each other. Her recovery is long and arduous, but she is surrounded by the unwavering support of Kol, Skylar, Brae, and the entire Archer family. After Nova is discharged from the hospital, the family prepares a downstairs room for her at Kol’s house. He proposes to her, offering his great-grandmother’s ring, and she accepts. 

Four months later, Nova is thriving, teaching trauma-informed yoga at a friend’s ranch and expecting twin girls with Kol. She has found peace and reclaimed her life, and she is looking forward to a future filled with love and light. Her new life with her found family is proof of her strength, a life she embraces fully.
