Plot Summary

Antonia Adams is born in the early 1970s, a small, delicate, blond child caught between two warring parents. Her father, Brandon Adams, is a wealthy American entrepreneur who fell for her mother, Fabienne Basquet, a strikingly beautiful French waitress he met at a Parisian café. Fabienne grew up in hardship, orphaned as a young child and raised in an institution before moving to Paris at 18 to pursue acting. Brandon, himself emotionally stunted after losing his father in World War II and his mother to cancer during college, mistakes his intense attraction to Fabienne for love. After several visits to Paris, he proposes, brings her to New York, and marries her at city hall.

Four months into the marriage, Fabienne discovers she is pregnant and considers it a catastrophe that will derail her acting ambitions. She begs for an abortion, but Brandon refuses. She is violently ill throughout the pregnancy, and when Antonia is born, Fabienne refuses to hold or nurse her. Brandon is moved by his newborn daughter but grows increasingly distant as Fabienne's jealous rages escalate whenever he shows Antonia affection. Antonia learns to hide and stay silent, perfecting the art of seeming invisible by seven and feeling safest when no one notices her.

Fabienne's acting career never materializes despite years of auditions and minor jobs. She frequents Studio 54, a famous New York nightclub, uses cocaine, and stays out all night. When Antonia is seven, Fabienne announces she is leaving for Hollywood, where a producer has promised her a screen test. She tells Brandon that Antonia is his responsibility and that she never wanted to be a mother, later signing away her parental rights in their divorce. Brandon views Antonia as a burden and a reminder of his failed marriage. He buries himself in work, leaving Antonia with a series of babysitters.

Antonia internalizes her mother's abandonment and her father's indifference, believing she caused both. She cultivates invisibility as a survival strategy. At nine, she begins sneaking to Saturday movie matinees, hoping to glimpse her mother on-screen. Films transport her into worlds of family and love she has never known, and she begins writing stories with happy endings, dreaming of becoming a screenwriter. Her father reacts with anger when he learns of this ambition because it reminds him of Fabienne.

When Antonia is 14, Brandon begins dating Lara, an independent real estate businesswoman who has never wanted children of her own. Lara is the first of Brandon's girlfriends to show Antonia genuine warmth. She accompanies Antonia to Saturday movies and gently urges Brandon to engage with his daughter, though he resists. After nearly two years of dating, Brandon proposes, and Lara becomes a wonderful stepmother, though Brandon's emotional coldness toward Antonia persists.

After a battle in which Lara nearly risks their marriage, Brandon allows Antonia to attend NYU's Tisch School of the Arts for screenwriting. There she meets Jake Burton, a drama student from San Francisco who becomes her closest friend. When Brandon converts her bedroom into a home office and plans holidays that exclude her, Antonia spends Christmas with Jake's large, loving family, experiencing genuine warmth for the first time.

During a summer internship at a Los Angeles film studio, a fellow intern named Jeff Blake attempts to rape Antonia. She strikes him with a glass ashtray and escapes, an experience that deepens her wariness of men. She also searches unsuccessfully for her mother in L.A. During sophomore year, famed producer Brian Kelly visits NYU, selects Antonia for a backstage meeting, exposes himself, and pressures her sexually in exchange for career advancement. She refuses and flees.

Before her junior year, Antonia takes a paid summer position with Hamish Quist, a celebrated British producer and director, on a film shoot in L.A. When Hamish notices her ethereal quality while casting extras, he asks her to do a brief, wordless walk-on and tells her she could be a great actress. The following year, he persuades her to take a small speaking part in his next film. When she tells her father, Brandon explodes, calling her a tramp like her mother. The rift between them becomes a complete estrangement.

The film premieres to rave reviews. During Antonia's senior year, Hamish confesses he is in love with her, and she acknowledges she loves him too. He introduces her to Fred Warner, a prominent agent and attorney. After finishing post-production, Hamish proposes, and they marry in a tiny London chapel.

They settle into a happy life in London, where Hamish directs films starring Antonia. She becomes pregnant and tells Hamish on Christmas Eve; their son, Dashiell ("Dash"), is born the following June. When Dash is eight months old, Antonia discovers she is pregnant again and tells Hamish the morning he must fly to London for an insurance meeting. His helicopter strikes a flock of birds and crashes into a cliff, killing Hamish and the pilot. Antonia is devastated. She finishes the film they were shooting but tells Fred her acting career is over: She did it for Hamish, and without him, she has no reason to continue.

Lara has already left Brandon, repelled by his response to news of Antonia's pregnancy with Dash: He said he hoped the child would not be a girl or she would be a tramp like Antonia and Fabienne. Lara flies to London to support Antonia. Antonia gives birth to her daughter, Olympia Lara, at home in a harrowing delivery. After months of grief and isolation, Antonia decides to return to the United States. She buys Haven Farm, a 100-acre property in Connecticut, and begins writing screenplays. Fabienne appears at the farm unannounced, now middle-aged and calling herself Fabienne Wheeler after a subsequent marriage. She has come not to reconnect but to ask Antonia to help her find acting work. Antonia sends her away, recognizing the full extent of her mother's narcissism. Fabienne never returns.

Antonia spends a year writing her first screenplay, which Fred calls a masterpiece. He secures financing, and the producers agree to let her direct. The film receives strong reviews, launching her career behind the camera. She follows with a string of successes, earning a Golden Globe nomination by 30. She writes, directs, and raises her children on the farm, rarely leaving the property. Brandon writes a letter apologizing for his cruelty, but Antonia does not pursue reconciliation, seeing him about once a year so the grandchildren can visit.

Dash grows into a kind, animal-loving young man who dreams of becoming a veterinarian in Africa. Olympia is headstrong and determined to be an actress, and some of her self-centered tendencies worry Antonia. Antonia insists Olympia finish high school and take her first role with a director other than her mother.

At 43, Antonia hires Boden Locke, a 40-year-old assistant director who grew up around the world as the son of an oil company executive. When Dash breaks his leg at a game preserve in South Africa, Boden volunteers to accompany Antonia on the trip. Over the week they spend there, they grow close. Back home, she offers him the empty cottage on her property. Their relationship deepens into romance, and she invites him to move into the main house. Both children enthusiastically approve.

At 50, Antonia hosts a large party at Haven Farm celebrating Dash's graduation from veterinary school and her own birthday. She and Boden have made 20 films together and been a couple for six years. Olympia's acting career is thriving, and Dash is leaving for a wildlife rescue project in Africa. Lara attends the party with her longtime partner. During the celebration, overwhelmed by being the center of attention, Antonia slips away to the lake on the property. Boden finds her there, as he always does, sitting on a rock in the moonlight. She no longer needs to be invisible because she feels safe with him, just as she once did with Hamish. When she is ready, they walk back to the party hand in hand. Antonia reflects that the right people have come into her life one by one, and those who could not love her are gone.
