Plot Summary

Nadeeka Prasanna, a recruitment professional and mother of two young daughters, nine-year-old Maya and six-year-old Nish, races home after phoning her live-in partner, Jamie Golding. She heard a woman's voice and the rumble of the train line past their house, convincing her Jamie is home with someone else rather than at his office. Her anxiety is sharpened by her past: Her ex-husband, Scott Hadley, cheated on her throughout their marriage.

When Nadeeka arrives at their home on Cedar Walk, she finds police tape across the front door and a young officer at the entrance. She pushes past him and discovers Jamie's body on the blood-soaked living room carpet. He has been stabbed. A man identifying himself as Detective Inspector Burton takes charge, questioning Nadeeka and acting as her family liaison officer. She watches as personnel in forensic suits remove Jamie's laptop and phone, then his body via a private ambulance. Burton is calm and professional, and Nadeeka trusts him completely.

Over the following days, Burton meets Nadeeka at her home, which has been cleaned so thoroughly that no trace of the murder remains. He reveals that a neighbor saw a dark-haired woman visiting the house while Nadeeka was at work. Nadeeka admits she suspected Jamie of having an affair. Searching Jamie's desk, she finds a framed family photograph concealed in the cavity beneath the drawer runners, brought home from his office and hidden. At ATP Construction, Jamie's workplace, she discovers the initials "ND" in his diary on five dates when he claimed to be working late. Assuming "ND" refers to a colleague named Nicole Davis, Nadeeka confronts her publicly and is escorted out by Carrie Finder, the head of People and Culture.

When Nadeeka goes to the police station, she learns there is no DI Burton, no record of Jamie's murder, and no evidence that any officers ever attended her address. Detective Chief Inspector Lauren Caldwell from major crime tells Nadeeka the entire investigation was fabricated: The officers, forensics team, crime scene cleanup, and private ambulance were all fake.

Lauren assembles her team, which includes her fiancé, Detective Sergeant Fraser Hogan. Forensic examination of Nadeeka's house confirms a fatal amount of blood beneath the ripped-up carpet and skirting boards. Lauren also finds a note in which Jamie apologizes and says he plans to move out. A neighbor's Tesla camera captures the license plate of Burton's rental car, paid for with a cloned credit card. The same card hired a biohazard cleanup company whose owner still has photographs of the crime scene. Messages from Jamie's phone cloud include a death threat from Scott and cryptic three-word phrases that prove to be reversed coordinates from what3words, a geolocation system that identifies precise map locations using unique three-word combinations. These coordinates point to pubs, village halls, and a British Legion club, all booked under the pretense of Masonic meetings. Jamie's body is found in a shallow grave, and his fingerprints are linked to lighter fluid used in an arson attack on a nearby convenience store.

DI Jules Stratman from the counterterrorism unit informs Lauren that one of the venue bookings is linked to New Dawn, a far-right extremist organization rooted in white supremacist ideology. The initials "ND" stand for New Dawn, not a person. Lauren presents Nadeeka with accumulating evidence that Jamie held racist views: his fingerprints on the arson accelerant, his anglicizing of Nadeeka's name at work, the hidden photograph, and his attempt to prevent the girls from joining a multifaith nativity.

Nadeeka refuses to accept this. She visits Jamie's parents, Penny and Frank, in Sheffield, who insist he was never racist and show her his belongings filling their garage, proving he intended to stay with Nadeeka permanently. At the library, she finds Jamie's reading history includes extremist texts but also searches like "How to conceal your identity" and "What police unit deals with domestic extremism?" Drawing on workplace training about radicalization, she begins to believe Jamie was groomed rather than a willing participant. While dismantling a cardboard castle Jamie built with Nish, she finds instructions for a covert recording device, and Scott locates a tiny microphone sewn inside Jamie's balaclava. Nadeeka realizes Jamie was recording New Dawn meetings, not spying on her. His £300 cash withdrawal matches an anonymous donation the shopkeeper received after the fire. Jamie was trying to stop New Dawn.

A section narrated from Jamie's perspective, set two months earlier, confirms this. Through a chance pub meeting, Jamie is drawn into the orbit of Carrie and two men, Alan and Chris, whose casual racism escalates into open extremism. When Carrie reveals she filters foreign names from job applications and maintains a list of targeted companies including Nadeeka's employer, Jamie decides to infiltrate New Dawn. He attends meetings led by a masked figure known as "the boss," reluctantly participates in the arson while secretly calling the shopkeeper to ensure his family is awake, and begins recording meetings with the hidden device. On the day of his murder, he stays home to compile his evidence on his laptop. Alan, Chris, and Carrie arrive, discover the laptop and the truth about Nadeeka's identity, and Chris stabs Jamie. As Jamie dies, Carrie calls "the boss" to request a cleanup.

Lauren's team identifies Burton as Mike Bishop, a retired Metropolitan Police detective inspector. Arrest operations for Bishop, Alan Ellis, and Chris Morley fail when all three vanish, suggesting a leak within the investigation. Purchases of improvised explosive device components are traced to a cloned card.

The devastating twist arrives when Lauren finds a hidden burner phone behind the bath panel in the bathroom she shares with Fraser. A message from Mike Bishop reads "All ready for Christmas?" Fraser is "the boss," the leader of the local New Dawn chapter. He orchestrated the cleanup after Jamie's murder, using his position on Lauren's team to sabotage evidence and tip off suspects.

Lauren spends a terrified night beside Fraser, then goes to the chief constable at dawn. Counterterrorism takes over while Lauren maintains her cover. Fraser, sensing the net closing, uses his warrant card to enter the civic center where seven schools are holding a dress rehearsal for a multifaith nativity and plants explosive devices beneath chairs and the stage carpet. The civic center is evacuated, but Maya slips away to use the bathroom and does not rejoin her classmates. Fraser, cornered on the roof, seizes a teaching assistant as a hostage.

Lauren negotiates on the roof, appealing to Fraser, who briefly wavers. When the hostage lunges for Lauren's hand, all three teeter at the parapet's edge, but Lauren pulls them to safety and handcuffs Fraser, telling him his victims deserve their day in court. Inside the civic center, Nadeeka searches for Maya, remembering that Maya's role in the nativity involves emerging from a hidden panel at the back of the stage. Calling out "Olly olly oxen free," the phrase Jamie used during hide-and-seek, Nadeeka hears a click, and Maya emerges safely.

In an epilogue set 18 months later, Fraser is sentenced to life with a minimum of 35 years. Carrie Finder, Alan Ellis, Chris Morley, Mike Bishop, and others face charges, and New Dawn is proscribed as a terrorist organization. Lauren has begun spending time with Jules Stratman, though she remains cautious about trusting anyone new. Nadeeka scatters Jamie's ashes at a spot meaningful to their relationship, accompanied by her daughters and Jamie's parents, who have become a steady presence in the family's life. She feels hopeful. In prison, Fraser continues recruiting for New Dawn among disaffected inmates, convinced the movement will rise again.
