In a world where Santa Claus is real and the role passes through a family line, Nicholas Claus, known as Niko, met a university student named Sarika Khatri in Cedar Park, North London. They married at the North Pole, where Niko took over the family business of delivering Christmas gifts. After decades inside Santa Slow Time, a magical phenomenon that stretches Christmas Eve into over a year, Niko grew disillusioned as more children discarded their gifts. When Sarika fell terminally ill, he broke North Pole rules to bring her along on his final run. After she died, Niko abandoned his post and resolved to honor her memory by quietly helping people in need.
Ten years later, eleven-year-old Juniper Lane lives with her mother, Jennifer Lane, in a cottage at Cedar Mews beside Cedar Park. Her father, Briar Lane, an immigrant from Ghana who grew up in children's homes, was the park's keeper until he died of an undiagnosed heart condition when Juniper was eight. Briar treasured a book Santa gave him in care, a gift that inspired his career tending the park's plants. After Santa stopped delivering, Briar started the annual Santa Vigil on Red-Letter Day (December 18), a caroling and charity event that became a beloved local tradition. Jennifer, a former nurse, took over as park-keeper and is finally emerging from two years of grief.
Jennifer sends Juniper into the park one morning to bring in Duchess, an eccentric woman in her fifties who has lived in Cedar Park for a decade. Duchess shows Juniper a wooden sleeping shelter clamped onto her oak tree, which Juniper names the Armadillo, built by a mysterious figure named Niko. That evening, Jennifer texts a bizarre message and does not come home. Juniper and Duchess spend a frantic night calling hospitals, police, and contacts on Parklife, a community message board, but no one has seen Jennifer.
Duchess agrees to contact Niko, but Juniper cannot wait. After midnight, she disables the Armadillo's clockwork to lure him out. Niko arrives, dismisses her, and traps her inside the shelter. She frees herself and chases him into Cedar Forest, where deep snow and frigid temperatures reveal the effects of his residual North Pole magic. His eldest reindeer, Blixxen, has broken free after eating toxic rhubarb and charges at Juniper. Niko retrieves his magical work boots, which reactivate his Santa powers, and intercepts Blixxen with a burst of magic. While Juniper lies drowsily on the sleigh, a reindeer calf named Skära wanders close. Juniper's eye opens in her sleep and meets Skära's golden gaze, triggering an imprinting: a magical bonding that normally occurs only between a Santa and a reindeer. The imprinting bakes polar magic into Juniper's DNA, making her potentially the first non-Claus Santa.
Niko carries Juniper home and sings a magical lullaby to erase her memory. Six Christmas elves led by their chief, Tomescu, are meanwhile racing across Europe searching for Niko. The magical sack he carries, the
FørsGyff, functions as an interdimensional portal collecting children's Christmas letters. If no letter is drawn for 10 consecutive Red-Letter Days, the annual deadline tied to the sack's magic, the sack's power dies permanently. This year is the tenth.
Juniper wakes with no memory of the night. Dafydd Carnegie, the regional park director, arrives and threatens to place her in foster care if Jennifer does not return. He also plans to destroy the Armadillos, Niko's tree-mounted sleeping shelters for the park's homeless residents, cancel the Vigil, and incinerate its donations. Duchess saves the situation by impersonating Juniper's grandmother and mobilizes supporters to shield the shelters. That evening, Skära appears at the cottage. When their eyes meet, Juniper's magical memories flood back.
Juniper pulls Niko's boots and sack from Skära's saddlebags, mounts the reindeer, and takes flight. She tails Carnegie's truck to the compound of Miss Trude Madden, a local crime boss operating an illegal incinerator. Juniper uses the sack to absorb the stolen donation bags and escapes on Skära, though Trude's son, Lar (short for Larceny), partially films the encounter. Through the night, Juniper distributes the rescued donations and uses Skära's sense of smell to track her mother's scent, finding a trace only at the airport bus stop.
The police show Juniper a green tartan scarf with a red stain, and she confirms it is her mother's. Niko arrives to reclaim his equipment, and Juniper proves she shares Santa's memories through the
yuledrøm, dream memories inherited between Santas, by recalling words Niko once spoke to Duchess in private. But Trude's men have stolen the garden shed with Skära inside. Niko wins Carnegie over by giving him a toy identical to one he wanted as a child, and Carnegie drives Niko to a Kilburn yard where the reindeer is supposedly held. It is a trap: Niko finds only a decoy and is locked inside a steel container. Meanwhile, Duchess reveals her true identity as Professor Josephine Spangles, a scientist who discovered the unit of Christmas magic. A disastrous experiment years earlier left her with permanent golden veins and a deep fear of institutions.
Juniper and Carnegie devise a rescue. At Trude's stables, Juniper sings the lullaby to put the crew to sleep, frees Skära, and flies to Kilburn. She lowers the sack through a ventilation hatch, and Niko dives inside, violating the prime rule against entering it. Inside, he briefly encounters a vision of Sarika, who urges him to return to his duties. Juniper hauls him out. During their escape, Lar grabs Skära's antlers but is flung into the container, and Juniper bolts the door.
Duchess collapses at the cottage from a severe asthma attack caused by a magic allergy: Her golden-veined body cannot tolerate the growing concentration of polar magic. Carnegie rushes her to the hospital, where Niko channels Spangles, particles of Christmas magic, into Duchess's chest. The healing fails because his reserves are depleted, but the stray energy bounces through a wall into a nearby room where Jennifer lies in an unidentified coma. Jennifer had drastically changed her appearance with a new haircut and platinum-blond color before being struck by Lar's truck mirror on Crumbly Lane. Lar left her at a bus stop and sent the fake text from her phone. The stray Spangles kickstart Jennifer's brain, and she wakes.
Niko carries Duchess to the bandstand during the Santa Vigil, hoping the crowd's belief will generate enough Spangles to save her. Juniper leaps from the spire, and Skära catches her midair. Their aerial display dissolves the crowd's skepticism, and the Spangles funnel into Niko. He and Duchess rise in a beam of golden light. Trude, who followed them, strikes Juniper and seizes the sack, nearly drawing a letter that would make her the Gift Giver, granting her control of Christmas for the year. Jennifer, who has followed Carnegie to the park in a wheelchair, punches Trude unconscious before the letter can be drawn.
Tomescu and the elves arrive as midnight passes, believing Christmas is lost. Then Tomescu spots Skära with a half-chewed letter in his mouth: The calf drew the letter in time, preserving the sack's magic. Inside a Slow Time Bubble, a magical field that freezes time within the park, Tomescu performs surgery on Duchess using concentrated Spangles, permanently curing her allergy. Duchess wakes with her gray hair turned red, tells Niko to call her Jo, and embraces her true identity. Juniper and Jennifer reunite in a tearful embrace.
In four epilogues, Niko and Jo return to the North Pole, where he resumes delivering gifts and proposes with an ice-diamond ring. Carnegie runs for mayor and wins. Trude escapes to Edinburgh, vowing revenge. Skära returns to Juniper with a note designating the calf as her permanent partner, and Juniper flies to her best friend Jade's house to recruit her as an honorary elf.
