Plot Summary

The novel opens with a prologue styled as a podcast introduction describing Mister Magic, a beloved children's television program no one can quite remember. The show ran for decades before ending abruptly around 1991 after an on-set accident. Six children would stand in a circle in a featureless black room, sing a theme song, and throw a cape into the air to summon a shadowy figure in a top hat whose face was never seen. No recordings exist anywhere, yet millions remember the theme song. The narrator promises a reunion of the surviving cast.

Val is a 38-year-old woman living at Gloria's Ranch in rural Idaho, running summer camps for girls. On August 1, she discovers her father dead, marking 30 years since he brought her to the ranch as an eight-year-old. Val has no memories before arriving there. Her father raised her in near-total isolation, forbidding television, school, friends, and doctors, telling her that her mother was dead, and saying "safe" instead of goodnight each night. Val has always carried a conviction that she did something terrible as a child.

Gloria, the ranch's owner, posts funeral details on Facebook. At the reception, three strangers arrive who recognize Val: Isaac, who calls her "Valentine" and says he has searched for her his entire life; Javi, a polished attorney; and Marcus Reed, a former child actor. They explain they were all cast members on Mister Magic and are headed to southern Utah for a podcast reunion organized by Jenny, another former cast member. Isaac reveals that Val's mother is alive. Reeling from her father's lie, Val joins them. An email exchange between Isaac and Jenny, unseen by Val, reveals that Jenny considers Val essential to their plan and warns Isaac not to take Val to her mother.

During the drive, Val discovers that rhyming songs she has always carried, about cleanliness, rules, and smiling through sadness, originated from the show. They arrive late at night at an impossibly tall house standing alone in the Utah desert. Jenny assigns each person a floor and locks the door behind them. The house fills with icy cold and a persistent hum, and televisions glow despite being off. Outside, Val finds Isaac, who confides that losing her shaped his life: He became a private investigator specializing in parental kidnappings because of her.

Jenny reveals that Kitty, the youngest circle member, was Val's sister. Val has no memory of a sibling, but she realizes the girl with blue eyes and brown pigtails she has always dreamed of was Kitty, a memory preserved even as her mind locked everything else away. Kitty died after Val's father removed Val from the show.

Interstitial chapters styled as interview transcripts reveal that the basement contains a white room with a screen displaying a woman whose voice carries a slight distortion. Marcus and Javi each make deals with the interviewer to watch the show again. Jenny breaks down and reveals that Mister Magic was her father; the interviewer's voice drops into a deeper register that terrifies her.

Isaac drives Val to meet her mother, Debra, who lives in a trailer outside the pristine town of Bliss. Debra is emotionally vacant, watching static on a television. She reveals that she and Val's father enrolled Val because the show was "fixing" her, and Kitty was included only because Val refused to go without her. Debra never searched for Val after the kidnapping.

At a gala in Bliss, the mayor reveals the town's history: Pioneers discovered a power in the desert and shaped it into broadcasts. He insists Val owes them for breaking the show. Jenny's mother physically attacks Val while the ballroom watches. Afterward, Javi warns Val the reunion is a scheme to restart the show, and a mysterious woman gives Val an unmarked VHS tape.

The five friends share painful truths over a bonfire. Javi describes being sent to a wilderness camp as a teenager, Marcus reveals his mother recognized his sexuality before he did and suppressed it, and Jenny confesses the show's rules left her profoundly unhappy. Later, Val answers a frantic call from Gloria on Isaac's phone, learning that her father was hiding from people connected to the show, not from police, and that Isaac saw Gloria's messages but never passed them along.

Val watches the tape alone: over 70 minutes of footage with no cuts or crew, showing the children in a featureless black space with impossibly sophisticated effects. Her child self is the only one who looks at the camera, eyes widening in a plea for help. Val controls the magic, pulling Mister Magic's cape from the darkness and putting it away, preventing him from appearing and directing the children's play herself.

Jenny discovers the tape and demands Val complete her basement interview. Javi and Marcus urge Val to go down for answers. In the basement, the interviewer now resembles a distorted, adult-sized version of Kitty. She calls Val "the liar who broke the circle" and insists Kitty's death was Val's fault. Val flees. Meanwhile, the others watch the full tape, which reveals that Val gradually stopped summoning Mister Magic and led the circle herself. The final segment shows the last circle without Val: The summoning fails, the darkness surges forward, and Kitty is swallowed.

The mayor and armed men blockade the road. He demands Val restart the show, revealing that attempts with new children ended catastrophically. He threatens to send the friends' own children into the pocket dimension, the black alternate realm behind the show's screen, if they refuse. Val decides to go back inside, and all four friends join her. After exchanging declarations and kisses, they sing the theme song, and the remnant of Kitty, sustained within the dimension, pulls them through the screen.

Inside, Jenny reveals the full truth: The magic is a real force discovered by Bliss's founders. A chosen adult enters and becomes Mister Magic but is eventually consumed. Jenny's father was the most recent before Val stopped summoning him. Kitty explains the dimension "gobbles up futures" and she barely exists. The magic shows Val a vision of Isaac becoming the new Mister Magic and their children entering the circle, but Val recognizes the destructive cycle and rejects it.

She forgives Isaac, who confesses he was groomed from childhood and manipulated into finding Val by Bliss's promise that he could regain custody of Charlotte, his daughter. While Marcus, Javi, and Jenny create a diversion, Val opens every sealed memory and uses that force of will to tear a hole between the dimension and reality. She pushes her friends through one by one. Kitty cannot leave; the dimension sustains what remains of her. Val seals every door permanently and stays, taking the cape onto her shoulders to become the new Mister Magic: not to control, but to protect.

The epilogue takes place years later at Gloria's Ranch. Marcus and Javi are married, Jenny is pursuing a PhD, and Isaac has custody of Charlotte. Mister Magic is now a free online show with no rules or corrections, only a presence that lets children feel whatever they feel. Bliss is bankrupt and abandoned. Isaac watches the show with the children, and for one breath, Val's face appears on screen; she smiles and winks, then vanishes. The narration shifts into Val's first-person voice: She is still with Kitty, still sending her message to every child watching: "Open the doors."
