Entering high school, Aven is determined to face the inevitable stares with humor and confidence. She inwardly struggles with her new environment and the recent move of her best friend, Connor, to a different school.

Zion is Aven's close friend from middle school. He is a shy and gentle comic book fan who is highly sensitive about his heavier weight. He lacks self-confidence due to past bullying but remains fiercely loyal to Aven, especially regarding individuals he distrusts.

Connor is Aven's best friend. He has Tourette Syndrome and recently moved to a different high school to rebuild a relationship with his father. Despite his own struggles with uncontrollable tics and public embarrassment, he is self-aware, honest, and consistently supportive of Aven.

Zion's older brother and a sophomore at the high school. Charismatic, popular, and the star quarterback of the football team, Lando surprises Aven with his artistic talent and love for drawing comic books. He is protective of his brother and increasingly attentive to Aven.

A handsome sophomore and football player who seemingly takes a romantic interest in Aven. However, Zion knows him as a merciless bully from middle school. Joshua presents a charming facade to Aven, creating a divide between her and Zion regarding his true intentions.

A bubbly, free-spirited, homeschooled girl who quickly befriends Aven. Raised by a former punk rocker, Trilby introduces Aven to punk music and its philosophy of rejecting social conformity. She has short blonde hair with colorful highlights and loves drawing chickens.

Aven's peppery, big-hearted birth grandmother and the former owner of Stagecoach Pass. Living in a retirement community, Josephine is fiercely independent and aggressively rebuffs romantic attention. She provides Aven with blunt advice and unwavering familial support.

The elderly man who runs the ice cream shop at Stagecoach Pass. Henry experiences "Sundown Syndrome," growing increasingly confused as the day progresses. Having spent his childhood in orphanages, he lacks any known family, which deeply concerns Aven.

Lando's pretty but petty girlfriend. She represents the superficial, popular crowd at the high school and frequently makes disparaging remarks about those outside her social circle.

A student at Connor's new high school who also has Tourette Syndrome. She quickly befriends Connor, making Aven slightly jealous as Connor becomes more comfortable eating in public with her.

A mild-mannered new resident at the Golden Sunset Retirement Community. He has taken a polite, shy interest in Josephine, continuing to smile at her despite her prickly rejections.

Aven's devoted adoptive mother who co-manages Stagecoach Pass. She teaches Aven self-sufficiency and fiercely defends her daughter's independence and capability.

Aven's supportive adoptive father who moved the family to Arizona to manage the theme park. He worries about Aven but respects her strength and resilience.

Zion and Lando's father. He and his wife own a comic book shop, and he shares his sons' enthusiasm for geek culture, happily planning family cosplays.

Zion and Lando's mother. She is warmly protective of her sons and warmly embraces Aven, readily helping her construct and pivot costume ideas for Comic Con.

Aven's horseback riding instructor at Stagecoach Pass. He guides Aven's training on Chili and tries to encourage her when she loses confidence in her jumping abilities.

An elderly, rescued llama at the theme park whose health is steadily declining. Aven feels a deep kinship with him due to his differences and spends time comforting him.
