A stranger in the hallwayThe book’s central premise arrived in a single, disorienting moment. Feeney had gone out for a run, and when she returned, the door opened onto something her mind classified as a threat before the facts caught up.
The story for My Husband’s Wife was born inside my head when I came home from a run and found a stranger in my house. The door opened, and they were just standing there staring at me. In real life, it was someone my husband had let in while I was out, but a stranger opening my front door and standing in my hallway, and the shock it gave me, sparked the idea.
That moment of doorstep dread was not an isolated trigger. Feeney has described a repeated pattern across her career where an ordinary, quickly explained event leaves a residue her imagination refuses to let go of.
A lot of my books have started that way, with a real-life event that either scares me or provokes my mind to think ‘what if.’
The incident gave her the setup. The central character had been waiting considerably longer: Feeney has said that Birdy lived inside her head for years before the right story came along for her to inhabit.
By the time the book was finished and in readers’ hands, Feeney broke her own rule. She has eight novels to her name and typically deflects when asked to rank them, but on publication day in January 2026 she did not deflect.
Books are like children for authors, we’re not really allowed to have a favourite, but MY HUSBAND’S WIFE is mine.
How she wrote it
Place as psychology, character before plotFeeney builds her novels from character or twist outward, not from plot inward. Because Birdy had occupied her imagination for years before a story existed to hold her, the novel reversed the usual sequence: the character was known first, and the architecture grew around her.
I tend to fall in love with a character or a twist, and then the story develops from there.
Once she had character and premise, Feeney made Hope Falls do structural work that a lesser thriller would leave to dialogue or exposition. The village is not backdrop; it is diagnosis. The choice to set the story in a fishing community hollowed out by holiday-home conversion meant the landscape could embody exactly the resentment the characters feel but rarely speak.
For me, the setting is often a character in the book. My Husband’s Wife is set in a pretty fishing village called Hope Falls. It looks picturesque and perfect, but just beneath the surface, there is something ugly and resentful simmering. Many of the houses in Hope Falls have become holiday homes, so in winter the village feels deserted and lonely. The setting reflects the emotions of the main characters, and so the setting becomes a character itself in order to reflect the story.
Feeney plots everything on a giant board before writing a word and knows the ending before she begins. The audiobook, released simultaneously with the print edition in January 2026, added a second layer of intentional craft: she chose a three-narrator production to distribute the book’s competing perspectives across distinct voices.
Richard Armitage, Bel Powley and Henry Rowley have brought the characters and story to life in the most wonderful way. Readers are in for a real treat with this audiobook.
The personal thread

She spent years submitting before her debut broke through, and the eighth novel landing at number one on the New York Times list in January 2026 landed differently because of that history.

The newsroom formed more than her work habits. Feeney has pointed to two decades of watching what human beings actually do to one another as the direct reason she writes what she writes. Darker-than-life fiction, for her, is a response to having witnessed life.
When people ask me why I write about such dark things, I always think, I could never write anything that is more horrific than the things people do to each other in real life. The writing of these stories is my way of trying to make sense of a world that increasingly doesn’t make any sense to me.
What she wants us to sit with
Lies we tell to surviveThe novel’s opening line doubles as a thesis statement. Feeney placed it at the very top of the book, and in interview she confirmed it was not rhetorical flourish but a position she actually holds about memory, self-deception, and the stories people construct to stay intact.
The book opens with the line ‘Everybody lies, and everybody dies. Those are two of the only things you can be certain of in an uncertain world.’ And I think that is true. As a species, we all lie all the time. And often to ourselves, we can’t help it. Our memories can make liars of us all, and it’s that need for deception, often for the sake of self-preservation, that fascinates me.
Beyond what the book argues about deception, Feeney has a view about what fiction itself does for a reader in a difficult moment. This is the function she wants the experience of reading to serve, and it applies to the escapism that a thriller in a hollow, wintry village can provide.
I think with the world the way it is now, we’re all looking for the emergency exit. Books are the best form of escapism that I know.
