Under his abrasive exterior, Deuce experiences difficulties with an absent parent and failing grades in school.

Granny is Lawrence’s strict grandmother who opens her home to several family members after they face eviction. She operates on a tight budget and firmly believes that everyone must contribute to the household. She frequently delivers stern lectures to Lawrence about responsibility.

Junior is the owner and operator of the Carver Recreation Center. He provides a safe environment for Black children in the community to gather, study, and play chess. He experiences friction trying to manage his son Deuce's behavioral issues.

Nikko is Lawrence’s eight-year-old sister. She shares close quarters with her brother and twin cousins at Granny's house. She often asks direct questions about the family's fractured state.
